Opis:
The article examines the specifics of the reader’s reception of Stanisław Lem’s novel Solaris in the context of indeterminacy, and the openness of the work to interpretation. The paper examines literary approaches to the formation of meaning in the process of reading this novel, in particular those implemented in Manfred Geier and Istvan Jr. Csicsery-Ronay works. Marie-Laure Ryan’s adaptation of the theory of possible worlds to literary analysis is employed as the methodological basis of my research. On the one hand, the effect of indeterminacy corresponds to the fantastic nature of the conditionality of Lem’s novel. Indeed, the key issue of the work – the encounter of humans with the unknown – requires the author to apply the potential of secrecy. On the other hand, this highly literary work (as well as Andrei Tarkovsky’s film adaptation) is endowed with multiple and ambiguous semantic codes that appeal to the depths of human consciousness and the unconscious. These codes cannot be interpreted unambiguously and, therefore, also provoke a state of uncertainty in the reader. In the textual actual world, semantic codes produce indeterminacy. They are linked to the essence of the single inhabitant of the Solaris, the Ocean, and phantoms created by it who visit the Station. In the novel protagonist’s Kris Kelvin personal world, the state of indeterminacy is associated with the existential essence of his relationship with his beloved Rheya and the problem of making contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. The surreal imagery of Kris’s dreams and visions provide for possible interpretations of the semantic codes of his world.

Niezdeterminowanie prawa w myśli przedstawicieli amerykańskiego realizmu prawniczego oraz ruchu studiów krytycznych nad prawem
Legal indeterminacy in views of American legal realists and followers of Critical Legal Studies movement
Autorzy:
Gołba, Filip
Opis:
The thesis is dedicated to the analysis of views on legal indeterminacy formulated among theorists associated with American Legal Realism and Critical Legal Studies movement. In it’s first part, both these trends of legal theory and philosophy are generally characterized, whereas in the second, the notion of indeterminacy is explicated and the arguments supporting the indeterminacy thesis by realists and followers of Critical Legal Studies are depicted. Particularly, views of Karl Llewellyn and Duncan Kennedy are taken into consideration.

Opis:
In the preface to his book „Philosophy of Chance”, Michael Heller writes that „the structure of the universe is twined with chances”. An analogical structure can be found in classical music, e.g. in the most of works written after 1960 by Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) – „the biggest Polish composer of the second half of the 20th century, or maybe even the whole century” (Tadeusz Kaczyński). The goal of this paper is to describe in rough the role of indeterminacy in Witold Lutosławski’s controlled aleatoric music and to show analogies between the ways indeterminacy is presented in Lutosławski’s music and Heller’s thought.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to recall paradoxical fact that within the scope of probing fundamental elements of reality, the complex interaction of determinism and indeterminism continues to engage physicists and philosophers for extensive periods. The Everett’s multiverse proposition as significant shift from the usually prefered ´incomplete´ interpretations, acentuates the underlying uncertainty central to quantum theory, and maybe even different physical laws in various universes. The quantum universe, characterized by its probabilistic essence and non-local interactions, confronts conventional deterministic models, urging a reconsideration of our foundational comprehension of reality. The rise of quantum indeterminacy brings forward significant queries about reality's nature, causal connections, and the limitations of human understanding. However, as investigation progresses into the quantum domain, a possible connection between determinism and indeterminism necessitates a detailed and multifaceted scrutiny to decode the enigmas central to quantum phenomena, with the eventual insights from Aristotelian metaphysics. By examining the historical context in conjunction with the theoretical ramifications of indeterminacy, academics can now better maneuver through the complex structure of quantum mechanics and its associated philosophical dimensions, thereby illuminating the core enigmas of the cosmos.

Indeterminacy in verbal communication : a relevance-theoretic analysis of aphorisms
Autorzy:
Jodłowiec, Maria
Opis:
Indeterminacy of meaning, which has to do with vagueness of the underlying speaker’s intention, is a pervasive phenomenon in human communication, but researchers hardly ever address the issue, as it is notoriously difficult to account for. The relevance-theoretic notion of weak communication offers a viable explanation of how this phenomenon can be approached. This paper argues that weak communication and its satellite, that is, poetic effects, prove particularly useful to account for how aphorisms work. The focus is on showing that the process of aphorism comprehension, underlain by meaning indeterminacy, and certain intrinsic characteristics of the genre find a reasonable and comprehensive explanation when looked at through the lens of Relevance Theory.

Opis:
On the basis of Roman Ingarden’s conceptions of indeterminacy and concretization and the notion of spoken action, Jacek Mydla constructs the idea of textual authority in Shakespeare’s drama. The text is regarded as the primary source of meaning which determines theatrical representation. When reading a play actively, the reader fills out areas of indeterminacy in an attempt to build a faithful imaginary representation of the action. The thus reconstructed social mimesis can then be transferred onto the stage. Mydla argues for the precedence of textual over theatrical concretizations of Shakespeare.

Textual indeterminacy revisited : from Roman Ingarden onwards
Autorzy:
Chrzanowska-Kluczewska, Elżbieta
Opis:
I discuss the phenomenological approach to the creative apprehension of a literary artwork along the lines set out, from the 1930s to the 1960s, by the Polish philosopher R. Ingarden. Responding to a revival of interest in phenomenological proposals concerning language and its products, I focus specifically on the problem of "indeterminacy", an inherent feature of both the linguistic system and the fictional worlds that support many literary texts, as envisaged by Ingarden. I would like to bring closer to the reader's attention the issue of "places of indeterminacy" in texts and text-worlds and of their "concretization" by the interpreter. I argue that with some possible modifications, the Ingarden model is still relevant to the study of aesthetic response to both verbal and non-verbal texts from the perspective of phenomenology, cognitive studies and the neuroscience of the arts.

Opis:
The present paper argues that Rothbard’s economic case against the state is more robust than suggested by his critics. The charge that it might be anemic is based on the suggestion that we can say literally nothing about the way governmental acts bear on social utility. Contra this supposition we submit that Rothbard’s critics missed the fact that the effects of governmental interventions might be actually indeterminate in two ways: weakly or strongly. If the indeterminacy involved in his welfare theory is weak, then his economic criticism of the state is more robust than envisaged by these authors. To the effect that this indeterminacy is indeed weak we advance the following reasons: Rothbard’s understanding of the Unanimity Rule; the avoidance of the contradiction allegedly committed by Rothbard over one and the same page of his famous essay; his economic criticism of interventionism being better aligned with his overall ethical anti-governmental stance; the principle of charitable reading, which cuts across all of the previously stated reasons. If our arguments count for something, then we are warranted in claiming that Rothbard is indeed able to say something about social utility under interventionism. And if so, then his criticism of interventionism should be viewed as robust rather than anemic.

Opis:
In the article I present “today-here” as a time and place without proper names, but full of traces and vectors leading in different directions, in an undefined direction in sum. Contemporary philosophy, extremely diverse and aware of its finitude, in its own way expresses and even intensifies such an experience of the present. I argue that the position of philosophy is not good, but it is not bad either, and that indeterminacy itself has a positive effect on philosophical thinking. I show the multitude of “objects” that can be related to philosophy and the paths it can follow, for instance reflecting on social and political phenomena or on problems related to the sciences. Noting little public interest in philosophy today, I defend, nevertheless, the role it can play in contemporary society.

Opis:
Many of Patrick Modiano’s novels involve the motif of the game – predicate and space – in the narration, at characterization, thematic and structural levels. The introduction of this minor element – it never reaches the level of a trope – nonetheless informs us both about the novelistic techniques employed by Modiano and about the metaphysical considerations underpinning his writing. As such, a close reading of various episodes articulated around the motif of the game allows us to better understand the methods adopted by the novelist in the development of his characters and in the architecture of his texts. Furthermore, the insertion of the motif of the game allows us to identify and analyse the value given to chance and indeterminacy in all its forms in the Modianian novel, from which a true metaphysics, if not an ethics, of indeterminacy, can in turn be deployed.
