Fake news in an information overload world. Case study

Opis:: The aim of this paper is presentation and analysis of fake news phenomenon in an information overloaded world on the example of selected cases. It was characterized what fake news is showing the genesis of this phenomenon and its various categories appearing in the media. An attempt was made to define fake news based on scientific sources. The paper also discusses potential recipients of fake content and actions that were taken to stop spread misleading information. Using the statistical method, the results of the analysis of information services were presented and the conclusions resulting from the research were indicated. Afterwards a creative proposal to improve the fight against fake news was presented. The summary formulates the conclusions of the analysis and the proposal for future research.
Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie i poddanie analizie zjawiska fałszywych wiadomości w świecie przeciążonym informacją na przykładzie wybranych przypadków. Scharakteryzowano czym jest fake news ukazując genezę tego zjawiska oraz jego różne kategorie występujące w mediach. Podjęto próbę definicji w oparciu o źródła naukowe. W pracy omówiono również potencjalnych odbiorców fałszywych treści oraz działania jakie podjęto by zahamować ich rozprzestrzenianie się. Wykorzystując metodę statystyczną przedstawiono wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy serwisów informacyjnych a także wskazano wynikające z badań wnioski. Następnie zaprezentowano twórczą propozycję udoskonalenia walki z fake newsami. W podsumowaniu sformułowano wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy oraz propozycję dalszych badań.

Opis:: Background: In large-scale corporations in the software engineering context information overload problems occur as stakeholders continuously produce useful information on process life-cycle issues, matters related to specific products under development, etc. Information overload makes finding relevant information (e.g., how did the company apply the requirements process for product X?) challenging, which is in the primary focus of this paper. Contribution: In this study the authors aimed at evaluating the ease of implementing a semantic knowledge management system at Ericsson, including the essential components of such systems (such as text processing, ontologies, semantic annotation and semantic search). Thereafter, feedback on the usefulness of the system was collected from practitioners. Method: A single case study was conducted at a development site of Ericsson AB in Sweden. Results: It was found that semantic knowledge management systems are challenging to implement, this refers in particular to the implementation and integration of ontologies. Specific ontologies for structuring and filtering are essential, such as domain ontologies and ontologies distinct to the organization. Conclusion: To be readily adopted and transferable to practice, desired ontologies need to be implemented and integrated into semantic knowledge management frameworks with ease, given that the desired ontologies are dependent on organizations and domains.

Opis:: The article presents selected aspects of the process of cognitive functioning of the users of contemporary technologies and the Internet, with special consideration of the negative effects of being immersed in the digital culture. The introduction synthetically characterizes the digital world, focusing on the most active users of the virtual space. In the body of the text, the author analyzes the negative effects of an individual’s functioning in the Internet space, especially those related to the change in the way of information acquisition and processing. The conclusions refer to implementing educational postulates connected with helping students develop the culture of behavior in the virtual space, involving as major elements the ability to distance oneself from digital media, to engage in deep reflection, and to organize and sort the acquired information. These skills are treated as crucial, ensuring the rational use of digital technologies. Focusing educational activities on the formation of youths’ media competence offers them an opportunity of fuller intellectual development, the sense of security in the context of expansion of the media, and active participation in the information society by structuring the available information and the knowledge constructed on its basis.

Opis:: Consumer protection regulation is based on the assumption that the communication of sufficient information to consumers enables them to protect themselves against unfair business practices and the consequences of making uniformed decisions, since being imperfectly informed they cannot contract in their own best interests. It is a common belief, however, that providing the consumers with too much information at one time, such that it goes beyond their processing capacities may lead to inefficient and inaccurate performance. Disclosure of information plays a key role in the regulation of financial markets, but to make the disclosing regime efficient, there is a need to take into consideration the cognitive capacities, personal biases, heuristics and their influence on the decision making process.

Opis:: Niniejsza praca została poświęcona charakterystyce zjawiska przeciążenia informacyjnego wśród młodzieży. Uwagę skupiono przede wszystkim na definicji, ewolucji, głównych przyczynach oraz konsekwencjach tego zjawiska. Analizą objęto środowisko adolescentów, identyfikując przejawy nadmiarowości informacji, omawiając możliwe zagrożenia oraz prezentując strategie działań wobec tego zjawiska. W pracy został przedstawiony projekt badań z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza ankiety planowanej do przeprowadzenia wśród młodzieży, osób w wieku 12-18 lat. Badanie ma na celu rozpoznanie cech przeciążenia informacyjnego wraz z doznawanymi przez nastolatków skutkami fizycznymi i psychicznymi. Ma ono również podkreślić rosnące znaczenie wpływu przeciążenia informacyjnego na życie dorastającej osoby.
This paper is devoted to the characteristics of the phenomenon of information overload among young people. The main focus is on the definition, evolution, main causes and consequences of this fact. The analysis covers the environment of adolescents, identifying manifestations of information overload, discussing possible threats and presenting strategies of action against this phenomenon. The paper presents the design of a survey using a questionnaire planned to be carried out among young people aged 12-18 years old. The study aims to identify the characteristics of information overload along with the physical and mental effects experienced by teenagers. It also aims to highlight the growing importance of the impact of information overload on the life of an adolescent.

Opis:: Nowadays we are continuously bombarded with a lot of information, and because of it we have serious problems with accessing the relevant information, that is, we suffer from the information overload problems. Recommender systems have been applied successfully to avoid the information overload in different domains, but the number of electronic resources daily generated keeps growing and the problem rises again. Therefore, we find a persistent problem of information overload. In this paper we propose an improved recommender system to avoid the persistent information overload found in a University Digital Library. The idea is to include a memory to remember selected resources but not recommended to the user, and in such a way, the system could incorporate them in future recommendations to complete the set of filtered resources, for example, if there are a few resources to be recommended or if the user wishes output obtained by combination of resources selected in different recommendation rounds.

The quality of information in the Polish Internet portals: Onet, Interia, Wirtualna Polska

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the problem of the quality of published information in the Polish Internet portals and find the best solution for content readers of portals. Reviewed the scientific literature and above all, done own research analyzing the contents of the largest Polish Internet portals (Onet, Wirtualna Polska, Interia). Due to the very large amount of articles, a detailed analysis of the contents of a single text was limited to the publications from the zone news from home and around the world. As a consequence created two guidelines, which user have to follow during the appraisal, to obtain information about the subjectively high-quality. The first guideline concerns evaluation of any information, regardless of its purpose and use. The second list is more specific, founded for users with high a demand for high-quality information.
Celem pracy jest wykazanie problemu dotyczącego jakości publikowanych informacji w polskich portalach internetowych i znalezienie optymalnego rozwiązania dla czytelników treści w portalach ogólnych. Dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa naukowego oraz przede wszystkim przeprowadzono własne badania dotyczące analizy zawartości treści największych polskich portali internetowych (Onet, Wirtualna Polska, Interia). Z racji bardzo dużej liczby artykułów dokładna analiza zawartości pojedynczego tekstu została ograniczona wyłącznie do publikacji ze strefy wiadomości z kraju i ze świata. W następstwie powstały dwa wykazy wytycznych, na podstawie których użytkownik, w celu uzyskania informacji o subiektywnie wysokiej jakości, powinien oceniać udostępniony komunikat. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy ewaluacji każdej informacji, bez względu na jej przeznaczenie i wykorzystanie. Drugi wykaz wytycznych jest bardziej szczegółowy, przeznaczony dla użytkowników z dużym zapotrzebowaniem na informację o wysokiej jakości.

Opis:: Paper examines information deficiency and information overload phenomena on the Internet and describes their essential features. Drawing on examples from literature and former studies, consequences of both information deficiency and overload are pointed out and strategies to cope with them are suggested. The aim of the poll is to analyse behavior and emotional attitudes of Polish students in view of their search abilities. Results and findings presented in the work confirm the significance of information literacy both in education and everyday life information seeking. The research emphasizes important role of librarians and information professionals in enhancing information skills and information ecology.
Praca dotyczy problematyki deficytu i nadmiaru informacji w Internecie oraz opisuje cechy charakterystyczne tych zjawisk. Bazując na literaturze przedmiotu i wcześniejszych badaniach, przedstawiono konsekwencje niedoboru i przeciążenia informacją; opisano i zasugerowano strategie, stosowane intuicyjnie oraz realnie pomocne w radzeniu sobie z niekorzystnymi konsekwencjami tych zjawisk. Celem badań ankietowych było zanalizowanie i porównanie przekonań, reakcji i emocji polskich studentów w świetle ich umiejętności wyszukiwawczych. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają istotne znaczenie kompetencji informacyjnych zarówno w edukacji, jak i w życiu codziennym. Wnioski podkreślają ważną rolę bibliotekarzy i profesjonalistów informacji w propagowaniu ekologii informacji.
