Opis:
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between innovation strategy and performance with a moderating role of environmental dynamism in Poland. Innovation strategy and performance are popular topics of many studies, but the relationship between them is complex, as previous research reports mixed results. On the one hand, exploration, exploitation and ambidexterity innovation strategies have positive effects on performance, but on the other hand some research indicates a negative relationship. These mixed results are often explained by the dynamism of environment. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the results of a quantitate research that uses CAWI techniques (Computer-Assisted Web Interview). Data were acquired from 259 respondents working in large and innovative firms in Poland. The paper presents the results of the hierarchical multiple regression on the relationship between innovation strategy and performance with a moderating role of environmental dynamism. Findings: Research results show the positive relationship between exploration, exploitation as well as combined innovation ambidexterity strategies and organisational outcomes, while the relationship between balanced innovation ambidexterity strategy and performance is not statistically significant. Moreover, the research shows that environmental dynamism is a significant factor strengthening the positive relation between innovation strategy and performance, but only in the case of exploration and balanced innovation ambidexterity strategies. It also points out that the environmental dynamism strengthens the negative link between exploitation innovation strategy and performance. Practical implication: Research results show that both exploration and exploitation innovation strategies improve organisational performance. Moreover, the simultaneous pursuit of exploration and exploitation innovation activities allows to achieve better organisational performance. Managers should also take into consideration the environmental dynamism, as it impacts the relationship between innovation strategy and performance. Firms operating is stable environments should execute an exploitation innovation strategy, while firm in dynamic environments should chose an exploration innovation strategy or balanced innovation ambidexterity strategy to achieve better performance. The combined innovation ambidexterity strategy seems to be an appropriate strategy in stable as well as dynamic environments. Originality/value: The paper provides new insights on the link between exploration, exploitation and ambidexterity innovation strategies and organisational outcomes. It does not focus just on exploration or exploitation innovation strategies, but also on the jointed outcomes of both strategies on performance and its interplay with the environmental dynamism.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki hierarchicznej regresji wielokrotnej na temat relacji pomiędzy strategią innowacyjności a wynikami przedsiębiorstw z moderującą rolą dynamik otoczenia.

Opis:
Research background: Innovation is a very important pillar within a knowledge-based economy, in the regional and local perspective as well. A literature review on innovation and SME innovation strategies to their correlation and the possibility of their joint examination. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to explore the SME?s innovation strategies and their impact on effectiveness of innovation in a peripheral region. We investigate the effects of innovation activities not only among small and medium, but also micro firms which are not covered in official innovation surveys by the national statistical offices. We proposed a model of implementing innovation, and tested our hypotheses. Methods: Research was based on data drawn from CATIs carried out among 419 firms, therefore making a conceptual contribution to the knowledge on innovation strategy. The main statistical test for relationships and dependencies was the chi-square independence test. To arbitrate whether there were statistically significant differences between medians due to different factors among enterprises, analysis for variance (H Kruskal-Wallis? test for k independent samples) procedure was implemented. Findings & Value added: The results of our research show that among SMEs in peripheral regions dominated those which we call ?pragmatists? and ?imitators? in context of their approach towards innovation. The significance of objective factors showed that there was a lack of enterprises that could play the role of ?creators of innovation? in the peripheral region. However, the examined firms more often noticed positive than negative aspects of introduced innovations, which is determined by the scale of enterprise; they were focused mainly on the consequences of innovation for their products and services.

Opis:
Purpose: The innovativeness of enterprises is dependent on many variables, including decisions regarding innovation, possessed resources and competences, and the sector of their activity. Therefore, it should be considered in a strategic dimension, both at the level of the enterprise’s strategic innovativeness and overall strategy. Strategic innovativeness, which is a long-term process that takes into account the interpenetration of various types of innovation together with strategic thinking, can be an effective tool for achieving high operating efficiency and maintaining a competitive advantage in the market. The analysis of literature on the subject, as well as observations, indicates that even within one industry, there are differences in this respect. A plethora of publications focusing on the problem of innovativeness in individual enterprises, sectors, industries, and regions were found. The authors aimed to divide industries classified by NACE (the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community) divisions into homogeneous groups in terms of the innovative undertakings of said enterprises in a given industry. Methodology: The empirical part presents the results of own research using the cluster analysis method, while all calculations were performed with the use of R software. Findings: It can be concluded that industries can be grouped into homogeneous clusters in terms of the share of innovative enterprises. The authors can also conclude that clusters listed on the basis of the share of innovative companies that introduced new or improved products and clusters listed on the basis of the share of innovative companies that introduced new or improved business processes are very similar. Implications for theory and practice: The combined value of the considerations presented in the paper is the possibility of obtaining supplementary information about the homogeneity of innovative activities of said enterprises in an individual NACE division. These results can be used for further in-depth analysis of individual groups. Originality and value: However, there is no study presenting the similarity between industries and their division into homogeneous groups in terms of the share of innovative enterprises. Such a gap became an inspiration for the research, which allowed for the verification of this scientific problem.

Opis:
The documents of the European Commission's European prospects for 2020 emphasise, in a special way, that the equal participation of men and women is essential for Europe to exploit the full potential of innovative strengths. Innovativeness is in fact vital for the development of a knowledge-based economy and society. Due to its importance, it is promoted by instruments such as an innovation strategy and policy. The proposed article titled “Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS) as one of the fields for research in Innovative Gender (InnoGend)” indicates how preparation and implementation of RISs may become a research field in assessing the role of women and men in the innovation processes resulting from these strategies. In the analysis regional innovation strategy in Małopolska is used as an example. Therefore, the article contains two threads. The first one focuses on the evaluation of women’s and men’s involvement in the creation of strategic documents constituting in what way is their potential used to boost innovation. The second thread is a pilot proposal of methodology for describing and assessing the role of women and men in the implemented innovation process.

Opis:
Research background: There is no doubt that innovation is an important source of economic growth. In the assessment of the innovative activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises, two opposing views can be found. The first indicates the exogenous shock resulting from the global financial crisis and the associated innovation crisis and the subsequent period of innovative pessimism. The second shows the Polish economy as the European Green Island due to strong and uninterrupted economic growth over the past 27 years, controlled inflation, and reduction of unemployment as well as increase of the citizens? well-being. In these conditions, an interesting research gap appeared, which is worth filling, at the centre of which there are factors determining the innovative activity of enterprises, and in particular the role and importance of innovation barriers in various phases of the business cycle. Purpose of the article: The aim of the research is to determine the impact of innovation barriers and degrees of their importance on the innovation activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises during the business cycle. The time frame of the analysis covers three phases of the cycle: the prosperity period of 2004?2006, the global financial crisis of 2008?2010 and the recovery from 2012?2014. Methods: Pearson?s ?2 independence test and correspondence analysis were used for data analysis. The research results are presented in a graphical form of biplots that describe the coexistence of three types of variables: (1) types of enterprises and ownership sectors, (2) effects or objectives of innovative activity, and (3) innovation barriers and reasons for the lack of innovation. The basis of calculations were three databases covering the mentioned periods. Findings & Value added: High resistance of innovative activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises to economic fluctuations has been demonstrated. Innovation barriers and degrees of their importance had little impact on the operations of enterprises in the first of the analysed periods, when prosperity was booming. The impact of the global financial crisis on innovation activities proved to be counterintuitive, as enterprises have continuously achieved their goals and the importance of innovation barriers has diminished even more. In the third period, innovation barriers no longer had any significance for the innovation activities of enterprises. The phenomenon of a gradual decline in the importance of innovation barriers, regardless of the phases of the business cycle, was called the Polish Green Island Effect. The relationship found is a peculiarity which is probably unprecedented in recent world economic history.

Smart specialisation as a lever towards innovation : the example of Malopolska region in Poland
Autorzy:
Okoń-Horodyńska, Ewa
Opis:
The paper presents the process of devising the methodology for selecting smart specialisations in the course of preparation of 2013–2020 Regional Innovation Strategy for Malopolska Region in Poland (orig.RSIWM 2013–20). The article stresses the need for a new approach and methodology to stimulate effort to cooperation between universities and commercial entities for the development of innovation. So far, the European attempts to implement ambitious growth models based on research and innovation (the Lisbon Strategy) have been unsuccessful. Hence, the sudden European Union shift towards the real and the search for new possibilities to create innovative industry via implementing regional innovation strategies utilising the smart specialisation concept (RIS3) as a precondition to qualify for European Union funds allocated to research and innovation, which should ultimately produce structural changes satisfying the knowledge-based economy requirements.
