Most intercultural competence models have been developed by Western experts based on Western theory and Western cultural values, and they are not culturally specific models. The lack of non-Chinese researchers to study and contribute to the construction of intercultural competence from a Chinese-perspective is a serious shortcoming, and most of the models developed by Chinese scholars are a replica of the Western models. A Chinese-perspective of intercultural competence model is indeed needed to reinterpret concepts and theories that are coined in the West, which are then widely used and generalized without any concrete-solid bases of their universality. This paper deployed empirical study methods to analyze the content of the literature to understand the construct of Chinese-perspective intercultural competence models. Eight Chinese-perspectives of intercultural competence models formulated by Chinese scholars between 1998 and 2013 have been identified, two of them are researched in English, while six others are in Chinese. As a result, there are no significant differences in the components of those eight models, as most Chinese scholars agree that cognitive ability, emotional management and communication skills are three of the major components which constitute the Chinese version of intercultural competence models. This research is timely, and is worth conducting, due to increased Chinese investments throughout the world, and the power and influence of China as the world’s largest economy. The results could be used as a guiding operational scheme to prepare business partners from both sides for successful cooperation.

Today, a characteristic feature of life is contact (direct or via media) with “otherness” and the “Other” – ethnically, religiously, nationally. The issue of the links between multiculturalism and the media is essential for education, but it does not seem to be sufficiently taken into account in the formal education of teachers. Therefore, the article addressed the issue of shaping media competences and intercultural competences of teachers, indicating the need to include both these issues in an integral manner. It has become important to consider the dimensions of these competences – cognitive, pragmatic and emotional – as well as to show the issues that should be present in the education of teaching staff. This type of approach seems to meet the requirements relating to the dynamically forming “knowledge-based society and “multicultural society”.

Opis:
The article deals with the phenomenon of intercultural communication. Presented are the results of the survey method aimed at analysing the level of formation of intercultural competence of Ukrainian VSPU students living abroad. Differences and similarities in the students’ intercultural communication experience have been revealed by comparison. The ranking method was used to classify the obtained data when analysing the students’ life experiences abroad. The research results were presented graphically in charts and tables using descriptive statistics.

Shaping learners’ intercultural competence has been slowly paving its way to a due rank in education. Developing intercultural competence results from familiarization with culture, which may take place in a direct or indirect way. What is essential here is the role of the teacher, who functions as a mediator between cultures. The presented study aims at indicating the growing significance of intercultural aspects of education in Europe - a united multiculturalness bothered by the crisis, as well as presenting (in reference to bilingual teaching) theoretical and practical solutions for intercultural education, providing inspiration for pedagogical practice. Bilingual teaching, as one of the most innovative forms of foreign language teaching, is a manifestation of practical implementation of the intercultural approach to education and it enhances shaping intercultural competence.

The realm of business is the realm of hard facts, profit and loss statements, tough competition and merciless battle for market share. The reality is that business survival is almost always at stake in our turbulent times. There is no denying that it is the competence of business people that plays a key role in business success. This paper discusses the concept of competence from the perspective of the anthropocentric theory, i.e. viewed as an inherent property of a human being. The author also presents an overview of the selected concepts of competence, discursive competence and intercultural competence in international business. The author points to potential risks related to the expansion of business activity into foreign markets, including the risks resulting from cultural differences. The selected issues of negotiation in international business are also discussed in the last section of the paper.

Intercultural communicative competence as a focus of applied linguistic research in Poland

Intercultural communicative competence has become a focus of a number of studies conducted within the area of second language acquisition, those theoretically oriented and those aiming to approach this subject area in a more practical manner. The paper looks at a selection of recent studies exploring issues related to ICC, conducted by Polish researchers and published in academic publications. The aim of this overview is to demonstrate how the concept of ICC is understood and investigated in FL acquisition studies and what intercultural topics are most up-to-date in a Polish research context. The analysis also highlights the areas that in the opinion of the Author of the present paper need more academic attention. It is hoped that this discussion will be of interest to researchers exploring second language issues as well as practitioners responsible for education.
