Opis:: The objective of this case study is to investigate the role of student mobility in the development of intercultural communicative competence in university students. In order to indicate the changes in the participants, especially about their attitudes towards Spanish culture, Spaniards and their stereotypes, an interpretative research with an ethnographic approach has been carried out, namely, we have interviewed several students of Hispanic Philology from the University of Ljubljana (level C1 of Spanish), who had spent at least one semester with the Erasmus scholarship studying in Spain. The article does not pretend to achieve a statistical generalization due to its limited sample, however it can be useful as a preliminary study.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to discuss the place and role of the intercultural encounter (IE) in communication and education, including in foreign language teaching. Firstly, I present the IE as a communicative event and define it using terms developed by ethnographers of speech (communication). Secondly, I discuss the concepts contained in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) relating to the mediation of text, concepts, and communication, and present the original definition of mediation in intercultural contacts. That section emphasises that mediation does not only act as an intermediary facilitating the course of a communication event but also as an “understanding interview with oneself.” Next, I discuss theoretical concepts related to the IE, I describe it as a tool used in teaching and intercultural education, and I present a description of the IE by a student of the Teaching Polish as a Foreign/Second Language course at the University of Lodz. Finally, I analyse an example description of an IE and present preliminary conclusions on how to use IE descriptions in various educational contexts.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie miejsca i roli spotkania interkulturowego (SI) w komunikacji oraz edukacji, także w praktyce glottodydaktycznej. W części 1. pracy przedstawiono SI jako zdarzenie komunikacyjne i zdefiniowano je z użyciem pojęć stosowanych przez etnografów mowy (komunikacji). W części 2. omówiono koncepcje zawarte w Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFR 2018) związane z mediacją tekstu, pojęć i komunikacji oraz zaprezentowano autorską definicję mediacji, odnoszącą się do kontaktów międzykulturowych. Zaakcentowano w niej, że mediacja polega także na prowadzeniu „wywiadu rozumiejącego z samym sobą”, nie tylko na występowaniu w roli pośrednika ułatwiającego przebieg danego epizodu komunikacyjnego. W części 3. omówiono pojęcia teoretyczne odnoszące się do SI, scharakteryzowano je jako narzędzie stosowane w pedagogice i edukacji interkulturowej, a następnie zaprezentowano wybrany opis SI autorstwa studentki specjalizacji Nauczanie Języka Polskiego jako Obcego/Drugiego Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W części czwartej przeanalizowano przykładowy opis SI oraz przedstawiono wstępne wnioski na temat sposobów wykorzystania opisów SI w różnorodnych kontekstach edukacyjnych.

Opis:: Inhibitions in speaking (or fear of speaking) can affect communicative processes in cross-cultural groups of learners. They may result from numerous emotional, cognitive or psychophysiological factors. The article concentrates on the most common types of inhibitions observed in a group of students during a project based seminar which took place in Poznań in December 2016. The seminar was a joint venture organised by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the University of Marburg. The student participants were working on developing cultural teaching materials, and after the seminar they took part in a qualitative survey intended to examine their reflections concerning the project. The article presents a discussion of selected findings.

Opis:: The text discusses the consequences of cultural encounter. The clash between groups of different cultures in the result of migration provoke a phenomenon of reciprocal interactions and social and cultural changes of a great complexity. The nature of these changes is mutual adaptation and integration of newcomers with the hosting society. This process takes sometimes several generations and not always means the complete assimilation. The adaptation has various stages and forms, but the adaptation and accommodation stimulates cultural universalization and transculturation. The move from native culture into the more universal culture of the country of the settlement proves to be more complex than structural adaptation. It requires changes in the identity of people exposed to the process of assimilation and changes of the structure of the group. The article refers to main theories and concepts of assimilation which are confronted with the current phenomenon in the world.
Tekst omawia problematykę następstw kontaktu kulturowego. W konsekwencji zderzenia grup kulturowych w wyniku migracji dochodzi do procesów i zjawisk wzajemnego ich oddziaływania oraz złożonych interakcji społecznych i przemian kulturowych. Przemiany przybierają charakter wzajemnego dostosowania się i integrowania przybyszów ze społeczeństwem przyjmującym. W wielu przypadkach proces ten trwa kilka pokoleń i nie zawsze kończy się pełną asymilacją. Przystosowanie przebiega przez różne fazy, przybierając rozmaite formy. Opis:: This paper seeks to resolve the problem of redefining cultural boundaries. Therefore, the following questions are addressed: 1) To what do cultural boundaries refer, and of what do they basically consist? 2) On what conditions and to what extent is the metaphor of cultural boundaries appropriate? 3) On what conditions can cultural boundaries be broken or crossed? These questions are examined based on a philosophical analysis that draws from Dave Elder-Vass’s The Reality of Social Construction (2012) and Alasdair MacIntyre’s Whose Justice? Which Rationality? (2003). As a major result, it is shown that the metaphor of boundaries is an appropriate tool for cultural studies, insofar as it helps to explain why different norms are followed in different cultures, and how cultural conflicts are related to breaking of norms endorsed and enforced by different social groups. The metaphor of boundaries fits this task, because with the help of it different cultures and social groups can be structured and represented as distinct collective entities, yet with blurred and changing borders, that can side, collide, and overlap with each other.

W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiłam kontekst historyczny kolonializmu włoskiego w Afryce, opisując wszystkie najważniejsze wydarzenia. Zwróciłam również uwagę na problemy finansowe, militarne i środowiskowe, z którymi Włochy borykały się podczas swoich kolonialnych przedsięwzięć i podkreśliłam ogromne różnice między propagandowymi obietnicami kolonizacji a brutalną rzeczywistością włoskich kolonii, charakteryzujące się dyskryminacją, przemocą oraz brakiem stabilności i dobrobytu dla miejscowej ludności.W drugim rozdziale koncentruję się na powieści Ennio Flaiano Tempo di uccidere, która opisuje historię porucznika zmagającego się z rzeczywistością kolonialną. Analizując jego sposób myślenia i zachowania zarówno wobec tubylców jak i swoich towarzyszy opisałam, jaki wpływ i konsekwencje miała na niego włoska okupacja, starając się jednocześnie zrozumieć lepiej motywacje jego postępowania. W trzecim rozdziale dokonałam analizy powieści Gabrielli Ghermandi Regina di fiori e di perle, która opowiada o włoskiej ekspansji kolonialnej w Etiopii z perspektywy osób, które ją przeżyły. Skupiłam się głównie na historiach kobiet, które oferują odmienne spojrzenie na historię kolonialną i podkreślają znaczenie kobiet w czasach oporu, gdzie odgrywały aktywne i heroiczne role.Na zakończenie przeprowadziłam krótką analizę porównawczą wizerunku kobiet w obu powieściach. W Tempo di uccidere kobiety są przedstawione jako bierne ofiary kolonializmu, niezdolne do samodzielnego myślenia, a w Regina di fiori e di perle ten obraz jest odwrócony, ukazując kobiety jako odważne i silne postacie.Podczas pisania tej pracy, zależało mi na dokładnym przedstawieniu historii włoskiego kolonializmu z perspektywy zarówno kolonizatorów jak i rdzennych mieszkańców Etiopii. Mam nadzieję, że choć w małym stopniu przyczyniłam się do większego zrozumienia tak ważnego aspektu włoskiej historii oraz skłoniłam do krytycznej refleksji nad konsekwencjami kolonializmu.
La mia tesi, intitolata Due sguardi sulla guerra d'Etiopia: Tempo di uccidere e Regina di fiori e di perle, ha come obiettivo principale la descrizione e l'approfondimento di un argomento legato al colonialismo italiano, attraverso l'analisi di due romanzi. Nel primo capitolo, ho presentato il contesto storico dell'espansione coloniale italiana in Africa alla fine del XIX secolo e durante l'era fascista. In particolare, ho evidenziato i problemi finanziari, militari e ambientali che l'Italia ha affrontato durante le sue imprese coloniali. Ho inoltre sottolineato la discrepanza tra le promesse propagandistiche della colonizzazione e la cruda realtà delle colonie italiane, caratterizzata da discriminazione, violenze e mancanza di stabilità e prosperità per gli indigeni.Nel secondo capitolo, mi sono concentrata sul romanzo di Ennio Flaiano, Tempo di uccidere, che esplora i temi dell'incontro coloniale e delle conseguenze della guerra attraverso le vicende del tenente protagonista. Ho approfondito la complessità del suo carattere, evidenziando le sue contraddizioni e le paure che si manifestano di fronte alla realtà coloniale. Inoltre, ho esplorato le sue relazioni sia con gli indigeni che con i suoi commilitoni, cercando di comprendere meglio le motivazioni del suo comportamento.Nel terzo capitolo, ho analizzato il romanzo di Gabriella Ghermandi, Regina di fiori e di perle, che racconta l'espansione coloniale italiana in Etiopia attraverso le testimonianze di coloro che l'hanno vissuta. Ho dato spazio principalmente alle prospettive femminili, offrendo così un punto di vista diverso sulla storia coloniale e sottolineando l'importanza delle donne durante la resistenza, in cui hanno svolto ruoli attivi ed eroici.Infine, ho condotto una breve analisi comparativa dei due romanzi riguardo all'immagine delle donne. Nel Tempo di uccidere, le donne sono state rappresentate come vittime passive, prive di indipendenza, mentre in Regina di fiori e di perle questa immagine viene ribaltata, mostrando le donne come figure coraggiose e forti. Tuttavia, entrambi i romanzi invitano a una riflessione approfondita sul passato coloniale italiano e sulle conseguenze delle azioni umane nel contesto del colonialismo.Scrivendo questa tesi, ho cercato di offrire una visione approfondita delle tematiche legate al colonialismo italiano, esplorando la complessità dei personaggi e mettendo in luce le dinamiche di potere e le ingiustizie presenti durante il periodo coloniale in Etiopia. Spero che questa analisi contribuisca a una maggiore comprensione di un'importante pagina di storia italiana e a una riflessione critica sulle conseguenze del colonialismo.
My thesis, Due sguardi sulla guerra d'Etiopia: Tempo di uccidere e Regina di fiori e di perle, aims to describe and delve into a topic related to Italian colonialism through the analysis of these two novels. In the first chapter, I presented the historical context of Italian colonial expansion in Africa at the end of the 19th century and during the fascist era. In particular, I highlighted the financial, military, and environmental challenges that Italy faced during its colonial ventures. I emphasized also the discrepancy between the propagandistic promises of colonization and the harsh reality of Italian colonies, characterized by discrimination, violence, and a lack of stability and prosperity for the indigenous population.In the second chapter, I focused on Ennio Flaiano's novel, Tempo di uccidere which explores the themes of colonial encounters and the consequences of war through the experiences of the protagonist, a lieutenant. I delved into the complexity of his character, highlighting his contradictions and the fears that arise in the face of the colonial reality. Furthermore, I explored his relationships both with the indigenous people and his fellow soldiers, seeking a better understanding of his motivations and behavior.In the third chapter, I analysed Gabriella Ghermandi's novel, Regina di Fiori e di perle, which recounts the Italian colonial expansion in Ethiopia through the testimonies of those who lived through it. I mainly focused on female perspectives, providing a different viewpoint on colonial history and emphasizing the importance of women during the resistance, where they played active and heroic roles.Finally, I conducted a brief comparative analysis of the two novels regarding the portrayal of women. In Tempo di uccidere women were depicted as passive victims, lacking independence, while in Regina di fiori e di perle this image is reversed, portraying women as courageous and strong figures. However, both novels invite deeper reflection on Italy's colonial past and the consequences of human actions within the context of colonialism.By writing this thesis, I aimed to offer an in-depth understanding of the issues related to Italian colonialism, exploring the complexity of the characters and shedding light on power dynamics and injustices during the colonial period in Ethiopia. I hope that this analysis contributes to a greater understanding of an important chapter in Italian history and prompts critical reflection on the consequences of colonialism.
