    Opis:
    This paper presents qualitative research examining to what extent sojourns abroad engage their participants in intercultural interactions and whether or not such experience translates into students’ intercultural growth. The results of the study demonstrated that studying abroad did not provide students with ample opportunities to immerse into the local community and fully discover a new cultural environment. However, students surrounded by local and their fellow international students met foreign cultures, which motivated them to explore and interpret the encountered diversity, and thus equipped them with knowledge about foreign cultures, sensitizing them to cultural diversity. Sometimes such contacts challenged students’ preconceived judgments and stereotypes of specific cultural groups, their ways of thinking, valuing and acting, and resulted, to a lesser or greater extent, in rethinking these, leading to changing attitudes and values. International experiences also stimulated students to self-analyze their own cultural identity, and thereby contributed to their growth in self-awareness in this respect. By offering opportunities for experiencing cultural differences and prompting students to develop coping strategies and to make references to the home culture, the sojourn is thus of significant importance for tertiary students, allowing for fostering their intercultural development to a certain degree.

    An island apart : Dejima as a site of cultural mediation in David Mitchell’s historical novel "The thousand autumns of Jacob de Zoet"

    This article analyzes the importance of the setting in David Mitchell’s historical novel "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet" (2010). For over two centuries Dejima - an artificial island constructed in Nagasaki Bay and the site of a Dutch trading post - functioned as the sole point of contact between the Western world and Japan, which at that time pursued an isolationist policy. The novel explores the island’s double function: that of connecting the two cultures and yet keeping them apart. Due to its peculiar location - within and outside Japan - the island was not only a trading factory, but also acquired symbolic meanings. The article examines Dejima’s role in the novel as a site of (limited) cultural exchange by focusing on its dual orientation towards both Japan and the outside world, its protean status in the story, and the crucial role of translation and translators. It is also highlighted that the intercultural encounters depicted in "The Thousand Autumns" foreground the role of the island in the modernization of Japan.

    Everyday spaces represent central platforms that provide opportunities for encounters marked by ethnic and cultural diversity, where transformations can be negotiated that rethink living together. The significance of these ‘third places’ has been extensively researched. Yet, some spaces such as public libraries continue to be largely overlooked by geographers. Public libraries also remain under-appreciated within wider society despite their obvious social functions. Central here is that public libraries can be understood as dynamic and ‘lived spaces’ that enable the emergence of transient connections and relationships. Such spaces are increasingly sparse within modern cities. This paper explores the potential of everyday spaces of encounter, specifically public libraries, to facilitate the unfolding of ‘light’ connections and relationships, nurturing more inclusive forms of urban togetherness and belonging in multi-ethnic societies and the significance that people attribute to these often mundane encounters and micro connections. In so doing, this paper combines findings from two research projects that investigate mixed or intercultural encounters in public libraries in Bremen (Germany) and Glasgow (Scotland).

    El tema del presente trabajo abarca los aspectos de encuentros interculturales. La base para escribirla ha sido la novela de Sender, La tesis de Nancy, cuya protagonista se va de viaje a España. En el trabajo hemos tratado de los conceptos relacionados tanto con la enseñanza del español como segunda lengua, la importancia de la competencia intercultural en el aula, igual que de los malentendidos interculturales como consecuencia dichos encuentros y de los aspectos literarios, es decir, con el género epistolar, la narración, etc.
    Tematem niniejszej pracy są spotkania kultur, przede wszystkim hiszpańskiej i amerykańskiej, oraz wynikające z nich nieporozumienia. Podstawą do jej napisania była powieść Ramona J. Sendera, La tesis de Nancy. W pracy zostały poruszone tematy związane zarówno z nauczaniem języka hiszpańskiego jako języka drugiego oraz z istotną rolą jaką odgrywa kompetencja kulturowa, jak i te związane z komunikacją międzykulturową, gdzie "nowy świat" jest obserwowany oczami osoby z zewnątrz. Zostały opisane, ponadto, elementy czysto literackie: gatunek powieści epistolarnej, narracja, itd.
    The subject of the present study includes the aspects of intercultural encounters. The basis for writing it was a Ramon J. Sender's novel, La tesis de Nancy. In this work we have dealt with the concepts related to teaching Spanish as a second language, the importance of intercultural competency and, also, to some literary aspects, as the Epistolary genre, narration, etc.

    In the era of globalisation a command of foreign languages is regarded as a priority. For this reason, the Council of Europe and the European Commission promote language learning and linguistic diversity. A focal point in their language policy is reflection, which is recognized as a key feature of an employee’s professionalism. Therefore, the importance of reflection is stressed throughout all the years of language education. The objective of this paper is to give information about the documents, tools and actions which support a reflective approach to language learning and teaching in Europe.

    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie warunków koniecznego dziś otwarcia procesów edukacyjnych na integrację z zewnątrz, która modyfikuje znaczenie poczucia tożsamości wspólnotowej. Procesy te dotyczą zachowań społecznych w określonych przestrzeniach symbolicznych świata wielokulturowego i obejmują: postawę szacunku dla wartości społeczno-politycznych, akceptację praw i obowiązków jednostki wobec państwa oraz organizacji międzynarodowych oraz zasad odpowiedzialnego współżycia społecznego. Potrzeba nauki życia w świecie pełnym różnic sprawia, że wychowanie międzykulturowe na każdym etapie kształcenia musi zająć miejsce ważne pośród zadań edukacyjnych szkoły, także szkoły wyższej. Argumentacja wpisana została w dyskurs nad istotą tożsamości inkluzywnej, zorientowanej w najnowszych badaniach regionalistycznych i podkreśla zagadnienia tolerancji, akceptacji Innego, dialogu międzykulturowego. Formułuje się również warunki wprowadzenia różnicy kulturowej do „własnego myślenia”. Autorka artykułu przedstawia praktyczne możliwości wykorzystywania na lejcach w szkole podstawowej i średniej literatury z kręgu kulturowych zderzeń. Ukierunkowanie na komparacje – porównywanie tekstów literackich (i zjawisk) z różnych obszarów kulturowych, dotyczą możliwych na lekcja polskiego przykładów malarstwa, rzeźby, architektury czy muzyki, Taka nauka prowadzi uczniów przez różne obszary graniczne czy sfery „pomiędzy” i dzięki temu może służyć kreatywnemu myśleniu o kulturze swojej i innych. Idee międzykulturowe jako integralny składnik wychowania kulturowego współczesnego ucznia każdego poziomu edukacji nie ma bowiem dzisiaj alternatywy.
    The aim of the article is to examine the conditions of educational processes which need to be opened for external integration which greatly modifies the sense of community identity. These processes concern the social behaviour in certain symbolic spaces of multicultural world, and they include one’s respect towards social and political values, acceptance of laws and duties of single people towards a nation and international organisations, as well as the rules of responsible social coexistence. The need to learn how to live in the world of diversity causes that intercultural education needs to be seen as an important educational aim of any type of school. The author’s arguments include the discourse on the essence of inclusive identity, the current research on regionalism; the arguments highlight the notion of tolerance, the acceptance of the Other, and the intercultural dialogue. The author establishes the conditions of introducing cultural difference into “one’s own thinking”. She also demonstrates practical opportunities of making use of literature of cultural encounters in primary and high schools. Comparative approach – comparing literary texts and phenomena taken from various cultural spheres – includes examples from painting, sculpture, architecture and music. Such method guides the students and takes them through various areas or spheres “in between”; as a result, the method may facilitate creative thinking about one’s culture and that of the others. Intercultural ideas are an integral element of cultural education of contemporary students of all levels of education; so far there has been no alternative to them.

    The text in zibaldon’s multi-discursive style presents hitherto unexplored moments of influence of Leopardi’s work in its transmission to German culture. It focuses on the acquisition and transformation of the poetic message of the Italian in the work of the poet and philosopher Margarete Susman, the result of which is to perceive poetry as penetrating philosophy and opening access to the Mystery of Being (Susman, then Heidegger, Gadamer).
