Opis:: In this paper we will explain what International Mindedness is, why we should teach it and how. International Mindedness could be understood as an interest in problems that require the efforts of different people and nations in order to be successfully resolved. As educators, we not only want our students to be aware of global issues, but to actually care about them. If they are the ones who will lead the next generations as scientists, politicians, or economists, they are the ones who can contribute to the end of certain practices, such as student drop out or global warming. So, as teachers, we have to give them the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to help them deal with personal and global issues that will contribute to a more tolerant and peaceful world.

Opis:: Migrant integration remains a continuous challenge in many EU countries, as shown by the retreat from multiculturalism and the concerns regarding Muslim migrants. In recent years, the increase in asylum-seekers has added further complexities to the issue. Meanwhile, volunteering is considered to be an important aspect of today’s society and a thermometer of civic well-being. Bringing together the field of migration studies and research on volunteering, we investigate whether volunteering would foster processes of integration and intercultural relations. We do so by presenting an innovative empirical study based on interviews and self-administered questionnaires conducted at two points in time over a period of about a year in a specific setting that brought together EU and third-country nationals in volunteering activities in six European contexts. Thus, we are able to provide an in-depth account of volunteering experiences and their effects on intercultural relations and processes of integration. The research highlights how volunteering fosters social interactions, intersecting with dynamics of inclusion. It is a valuable tool that strengthens the community as well as the process of social integration, helping to overcome the tensions and conflicts that persist in European societies. At the same time, we argue that volunteering cannot make up for all integration challenges since the process of societal integration requires a more comprehensive approach which includes tackling discrimination in structural integration.

Opis:: W artykule zaprezentowano analizę zjawiska konfliktu podkreślając potencjał sytuacji konfliktowych dla osiągnięcia międzykulturowego zrozumienia. Autor przedstawił koncepcję kultury i opracowania naukowe opracowane przez Geerta Hofstede, Gerta Jana Hofstede and Michaela Minkow, które pokazują różnice w radzeniu sobie z sytuacjami problemowymi. Autor pokazał sposoby doświadczania konfliktu przez uczestników mediacji i jego rozumienie na podstawie rezultatów własnych badań. Spojrzenie na konflikt z perspektywy komunikujących się stron konfliktu może być inspiracją do doceniania różnic i zauważania stref wspólnych oraz znalezienia optymalnego rozwiązania problemu.
In this paper the author presents an analysis of the conflict emphasizing the potential in this situation for achieving a intercultural understanding. Author presents the concepts of the culture and scientific studies described by Geert Hofstede, Gert Jan Hofstede and Michael Minkow, which show as differences in the process of dealing with problematic situations. Author shows the ways in which mediation participants experience and understand the conflict based on the results of your own research. Looking at the process through the prism of the communicating parties in the intercultural conflict may be an inspiration to appreciate the differences and notice the common areas in order to find an optimal solution to the problem.

Chosen aspects of building partner bonds in binational relationships

Opis:: Wanting to deliver new information about binational couples, absence of which have been noticed by polish social researchers, I conducted a qualitative research on chosen aspects of the process of building partner bonds in binational relationships, bonds between partners from two different national cultures. Using the understanding sociology approach and the intercultural communication theories I wanted to find out which conflict - solving strategies are the informants choosing, what level of reflectance and intercultural competences represent partners in binatioanl relationships, how the similarity of values and the unique language culture influence the process of building partner bonds in these relationships.
Chcąc dostarczyć informacji na temat związków binacjonalnych, na których niedosyt zwracają uwagę autorzy polskich badań społecznych, przeprowadziłam badania jakościowe wybranych aspektów procesu budowania więzi partnerskich w związkach dwunarodowych, czyli związkach małżeńskich lub kohabitacyjnych osób pochodzących z dwóch różnych kultur narodowych. Poruszając się w kręgu socjologii rozumiejącej oraz korzystając z teorii z zakresu komunikacji międzykulturowej chciałam dowiedzieć się jakie strategie rozwiązywania konfliktów wybierają badani, jaki jest poziom ich refleksyjności, jaki poziom kompetencji międzykulturowych prezentują partnerzy w tego typu związkach oraz jak wspólnota wartości i swoista kultura języka w parze wpływa na proces budowania więzi partnerskich w związkach dwunarodowych.

Tytuł:: Promoting intercultural understanding in German as a foreign language classes with the help of Leonhard Thoma’s literary texts
Zur Förderung des interkulturellen Verständnisses im DaF-Unterricht mithilfe der literarischen Texte von Leonhard Thoma

Opis:: The aim of this essay is to answer the question of the extent to which Leonhard Thoma’s texts contribute to the promotion of intercultural understanding in the DaF lessons. The primary aim is to show how important a role communication plays in this aspect. This should lead to an answer to the questions of what needs, drives, desires and dreams the new personality type of our age, i.e. the ego-orientated person, what it looks like what his inner self looks like and how he organises his relationships with other people. The conclusion of these considerations shows that successful communication promotes intercultural understanding and builds bridges between different cultures. The focus will be on Leonhard Thoma’s short stories, with particular attention to the project ‘From Kitchen Table to Kitchen Table’. The text selection criteria, principles, learning objectives and methods of working with literary texts in the foreign language teaching are also taken into account.
Der vorliegende Aufsatz zielt darauf ab, die Frage zu beantworten, inwieweit die Texte von Leonhard Thoma zur Förderung des interkulturellen Verständnisses im DaF-Unterricht beitragen. Vordergründig wird gezeigt, welch große Rolle der Kommunikation unter diesem Aspekt zukommt. Dies soll zur Beantwortung der Fragen führen, welche Bedürfnisse, Triebe, Sehn- süchte und Träume der neue Persönlichkeitstyp unseres Zeitalters - der Ich-Orientierte - hat, wie es in seinem Inneren aussieht und auf welche Art und Weise er seine Beziehungen zu anderen Menschen gestaltet. Die Schlussfolgerung dieser Erwägungen zeigt, dass gelungene Kommu- nikation interkulturelles Verständnis fördert und Brücken zwischen verschiedenen Kulturen schlägt. Das Augenmerk wird auf die Kurzgeschichten von Leonhard Thoma gerichtet, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Projektes Von Küchentisch zu Küchentisch. Dabei werden die Textauswahlkriterien, Prinzipien, Lernziele und Methoden der Arbeit mit literarischen Texten im Fremdsprachenunterricht mitberücksichtigt.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim stopniu teksty Leonharda Thomy przyczyniają się do rozwijania interkulturowego rozumienia na lekcjach języka niemieckiego jako obcego. W pierwszej kolejności ukazane zostaje, jak istotną rolę odgrywa komunikacja w tym kontekście. Ma to prowadzić do odpowiedzi na pytania dotyczące potrzeb, impulsów, tęsknot i marzeń nowego typu osobowości naszych czasów – jednostki zorientowanej na „ja”, a także tego, jak wygląda jej świat wewnętrzny oraz w jaki sposób kształtuje ona relacje z innymi ludźmi. Wnioski płynące z tych rozważań wskazują, że udana komunikacja sprzyja interkulturowemu zrozumieniu i budowaniu mostów między różnymi kulturami. Uwaga zostaje skierowana na opowiadania Leonharda Thomy, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem projektu Von Küchentisch zu Küchentisch. W analizie uwzględniono również kryteria doboru tekstów, zasady, cele edukacyjne oraz metody pracy z tekstami literackimi w dydaktyce języków obcych.

Opis:: Today, problems related to intercultural communication are actively studied by representatives of various sciences. As a result of this study, many concepts related to intercultural communication have been introduced, which have become the subject of research in both scientific and practical fields. Often, in defining intercultural communication, representatives of cultural studies, sociology, psychology and linguistics emphasize their professional approach to this phenomenon and reflect their unique view of it. This article focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of intercultural communication and cultural exchange within the framework of Polish-Ukrainian relations in the context of current events, in particular Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Polish support for Ukraine has become important and has many aspects, including humanitarian aid, political support, and economic cooperation. This support contributes to strengthening mutual understanding and solidarity between the Polish and Ukrainian peoples, as well as promotes the exchange of culture and traditions. The article presents a study of cultural exchange and interaction between the Ukrainian and Polish communities during the military actions in Ukraine. Focusing on the period after the invasion, the study examines the intense cultural exchange that took place between the two national groups. This exchange included the exchange of art, literary works, musical performances, and other cultural expressions. It reflects the efforts of both nations to maintain friendly relations and promote mutual understanding in a complex geopolitical context. Cultural exchange contributes to the expansion of knowledge, deepening of understanding and perception of another culture. Art, literature, and other cultural expressions allow people to get acquainted with the world and traditions of other nations, which makes it possible to form common values and opens a dialogue between Ukrainians and Poles. This dialogue helps to increase mutual understanding and improve relations between these communities in the face of historical challenges. It also examines various practical aspects of organizing cultural initiatives and further developing interaction between Ukrainian and Polish cultural heritage after the Russian invasion. These aspects include the organization of joint cultural events, cultural exchange, joint projects in the field of education, and so on. The study opens up new promising horizons for understanding cultural interactions in the context of global change and contributes to deepening interaction between national communities.

Opis:: The article presents the community as a category inscribed in the narrative of intercultural pedagogy, as an interdisciplinary pedagogical subdiscipline and educational practice. The concept of community and sociological approaches to this category were described, highlighting the variety of approaches and possible epistemological interpretations. Common features of various definitions of a community were indicated: goals and norms shared by members of the community, recognized values and accepted means of achieving them. Particular attention was paid to the concept of community in communitarianism, which treats the identity of an individual as a derivative of tradition assimilated by him in the course of socialization and the social functions he performs. The community was shown as a space of interpersonal relations in which the category of the Other was immanently inscribed. The relationship of the Self with the Other was referred to the source responsibility that the Self discovers as the sphere of freedom. The importance of hospitality, justice and creative understanding in the dialogical relationship with the Other was described. Openness to dissimilarity, readiness to recognize it and respect for the Other, as an inalienable element constituting a community and enabling the achievement of non-selfish Good, were also exposed.
W artykule przedstawiono wspólnotę jako kategorię wpisaną w narrację pedagogiki międzykulturowej, jako interdyscyplinarnej subdyscypliny pedagogicznej i praktyki edukacyjnej. Opisano pojęcie wspólnoty i socjologiczne ujęcia tej kategorii, eksponując różnorodność podejść i możliwych interpretacji epistemologicznych. Wskazano na wspólne cechy różnych definicji wspólnoty: podzielane przez członków wspólnoty cele i normy, uznawane wartości i akceptowane środki ich realizacji. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na koncepcję wspólnoty w komunitaryzmie, który tożsamość jednostki traktuje jako pochodną tradycji, przyswajanych przez nią w toku socjalizacji i funkcji społecznych, jakie pełni. Ukazano wspólnotę jako przestrzeń relacji międzyludzkich, w którą immanentnie wpisana jest kategoria Innego. Relację Ja z Innym odniesiono do źródłowej odpowiedzialności, którą Ja odkrywa, jako sferę wolności. Opisano znaczenie gościnności, sprawiedliwości i twórczego rozumienia w dialogicznej relacji z Innym. Wyeksponowano także otwartość na odmienność, gotowość jej uznania i szacunek dla Innego, jako niezbywalny element konstytuujący wspólnotę i umożliwiający osiąganie pozaegoistycznego Dobra.

Opis:: Moja praca magisterska Due sguardi sulla guerra d'Etiopia: Tempo di uccidere e Regina di fiori e di perle ma na celu głębsze zrozumienie włoskiego kolonializmu poprzez analizę dwóch powieści. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiłam kontekst historyczny kolonializmu włoskiego w Afryce, opisując wszystkie najważniejsze wydarzenia. Zwróciłam również uwagę na problemy finansowe, militarne i środowiskowe, z którymi Włochy borykały się podczas swoich kolonialnych przedsięwzięć i podkreśliłam ogromne różnice między propagandowymi obietnicami kolonizacji a brutalną rzeczywistością włoskich kolonii, charakteryzujące się dyskryminacją, przemocą oraz brakiem stabilności i dobrobytu dla miejscowej ludności.W drugim rozdziale koncentruję się na powieści Ennio Flaiano Tempo di uccidere, która opisuje historię porucznika zmagającego się z rzeczywistością kolonialną. Analizując jego sposób myślenia i zachowania zarówno wobec tubylców jak i swoich towarzyszy opisałam, jaki wpływ i konsekwencje miała na niego włoska okupacja, starając się jednocześnie zrozumieć lepiej motywacje jego postępowania. W trzecim rozdziale dokonałam analizy powieści Gabrielli Ghermandi Regina di fiori e di perle, która opowiada o włoskiej ekspansji kolonialnej w Etiopii z perspektywy osób, które ją przeżyły. Skupiłam się głównie na historiach kobiet, które oferują odmienne spojrzenie na historię kolonialną i podkreślają znaczenie kobiet w czasach oporu, gdzie odgrywały aktywne i heroiczne role.Na zakończenie przeprowadziłam krótką analizę porównawczą wizerunku kobiet w obu powieściach. W Tempo di uccidere kobiety są przedstawione jako bierne ofiary kolonializmu, niezdolne do samodzielnego myślenia, a w Regina di fiori e di perle ten obraz jest odwrócony, ukazując kobiety jako odważne i silne postacie.Podczas pisania tej pracy, zależało mi na dokładnym przedstawieniu historii włoskiego kolonializmu z perspektywy zarówno kolonizatorów jak i rdzennych mieszkańców Etiopii. Mam nadzieję, że choć w małym stopniu przyczyniłam się do większego zrozumienia tak ważnego aspektu włoskiej historii oraz skłoniłam do krytycznej refleksji nad konsekwencjami kolonializmu.
La mia tesi, intitolata Due sguardi sulla guerra d'Etiopia: Tempo di uccidere e Regina di fiori e di perle, ha come obiettivo principale la descrizione e l'approfondimento di un argomento legato al colonialismo italiano, attraverso l'analisi di due romanzi. Nel primo capitolo, ho presentato il contesto storico dell'espansione coloniale italiana in Africa alla fine del XIX secolo e durante l'era fascista. In particolare, ho evidenziato i problemi finanziari, militari e ambientali che l'Italia ha affrontato durante le sue imprese coloniali. Ho inoltre sottolineato la discrepanza tra le promesse propagandistiche della colonizzazione e la cruda realtà delle colonie italiane, caratterizzata da discriminazione, violenze e mancanza di stabilità e prosperità per gli indigeni.Nel secondo capitolo, mi sono concentrata sul romanzo di Ennio Flaiano, Tempo di uccidere, che esplora i temi dell'incontro coloniale e delle conseguenze della guerra attraverso le vicende del tenente protagonista. Ho approfondito la complessità del suo carattere, evidenziando le sue contraddizioni e le paure che si manifestano di fronte alla realtà coloniale. Inoltre, ho esplorato le sue relazioni sia con gli indigeni che con i suoi commilitoni, cercando di comprendere meglio le motivazioni del suo comportamento.Nel terzo capitolo, ho analizzato il romanzo di Gabriella Ghermandi, Regina di fiori e di perle, che racconta l'espansione coloniale italiana in Etiopia attraverso le testimonianze di coloro che l'hanno vissuta. Ho dato spazio principalmente alle prospettive femminili, offrendo così un punto di vista diverso sulla storia coloniale e sottolineando l'importanza delle donne durante la resistenza, in cui hanno svolto ruoli attivi ed eroici.Infine, ho condotto una breve analisi comparativa dei due romanzi riguardo all'immagine delle donne. Nel Tempo di uccidere, le donne sono state rappresentate come vittime passive, prive di indipendenza, mentre in Regina di fiori e di perle questa immagine viene ribaltata, mostrando le donne come figure coraggiose e forti. Tuttavia, entrambi i romanzi invitano a una riflessione approfondita sul passato coloniale italiano e sulle conseguenze delle azioni umane nel contesto del colonialismo.Scrivendo questa tesi, ho cercato di offrire una visione approfondita delle tematiche legate al colonialismo italiano, esplorando la complessità dei personaggi e mettendo in luce le dinamiche di potere e le ingiustizie presenti durante il periodo coloniale in Etiopia. Spero che questa analisi contribuisca a una maggiore comprensione di un'importante pagina di storia italiana e a una riflessione critica sulle conseguenze del colonialismo.
My thesis, Due sguardi sulla guerra d'Etiopia: Tempo di uccidere e Regina di fiori e di perle, aims to describe and delve into a topic related to Italian colonialism through the analysis of these two novels. In the first chapter, I presented the historical context of Italian colonial expansion in Africa at the end of the 19th century and during the fascist era. In particular, I highlighted the financial, military, and environmental challenges that Italy faced during its colonial ventures. I emphasized also the discrepancy between the propagandistic promises of colonization and the harsh reality of Italian colonies, characterized by discrimination, violence, and a lack of stability and prosperity for the indigenous population.In the second chapter, I focused on Ennio Flaiano's novel, Tempo di uccidere which explores the themes of colonial encounters and the consequences of war through the experiences of the protagonist, a lieutenant. I delved into the complexity of his character, highlighting his contradictions and the fears that arise in the face of the colonial reality. Furthermore, I explored his relationships both with the indigenous people and his fellow soldiers, seeking a better understanding of his motivations and behavior.In the third chapter, I analysed Gabriella Ghermandi's novel, Regina di Fiori e di perle, which recounts the Italian colonial expansion in Ethiopia through the testimonies of those who lived through it. I mainly focused on female perspectives, providing a different viewpoint on colonial history and emphasizing the importance of women during the resistance, where they played active and heroic roles.Finally, I conducted a brief comparative analysis of the two novels regarding the portrayal of women. In Tempo di uccidere women were depicted as passive victims, lacking independence, while in Regina di fiori e di perle this image is reversed, portraying women as courageous and strong figures. However, both novels invite deeper reflection on Italy's colonial past and the consequences of human actions within the context of colonialism.By writing this thesis, I aimed to offer an in-depth understanding of the issues related to Italian colonialism, exploring the complexity of the characters and shedding light on power dynamics and injustices during the colonial period in Ethiopia. I hope that this analysis contributes to a greater understanding of an important chapter in Italian history and prompts critical reflection on the consequences of colonialism.
