Zadie Smith’s latest novel, NW, presents a multiverse in which multiplicity is driven into homogeneization by the forces of those dominant discourses that attempt to suppress the category of the “Other.” This paper focuses on the development of the two female protagonists. Their opposing attitudes towards motherhood, together with their confrontation with their origins, bring to the fore the performativity found in the discourses of gender, sexuality, class, and race. Thus, this paper will explore authenticity and performativity in a contemporary context, where patriarchal and neocolonial discourses still apply.

The roads to empowerment : an intersectional analysis of Kurdish Alevi women’s struggle for equality and freedom

This paper explores how Kurdish Alevi women use their identity markers and the public discourse surrounding them to claim space for freedom, respect (both from others and themselves), and social recognition as sources of empowerment. It examines the processes of empowerment by analysing the interrelationships between various identities, categories, and dynamics that contribute to self-realisation. The findings are based on three short life stories that represent recurring themes in the narratives of fifteen Kurdish Alevi women interviewed in Dersim and Istanbul. Adopting an intersectional approach to empowerment, we illustrate how empowerment occurs on multiple levels and through various impulses and factors. We argue that the roads to empowerment are not one-directional; rather, the same factors that contribute to the subaltern position of Kurdish Alevi women can also serve as sources of empowerment. Through the life stories of the respondents and an exploration of how they cultivate a sense of empowerment, this article suggest that social processes linked to intersectional hierarchies can be strategically utilised by Kurdish Alevi women to demand social equality and challenge forms of discrimination. In this way, multiple layers of identity and minority status-often perceived as disempowering-can be redefined through activism and everyday practices as sources of empowerment.

This paper explores the (de-)constructive and critical role that autism can play in transforming the art of stand-up comedy. Analysing various aspects of audio-visual performance in Hannah Gadsby’s sets, Nanette and Douglas, this paper will attempt to identify a new autistic aesthetics in Gadsby’s performance and examine its differential relation to conventional neurotypical modalities of performing comedy. This paper will also examine how Gadsby revolutionizes and crips comedy to create space for the ‘negative’ affects (anger, tension), traditionally excluded from the domain of stand-up, in order to extract the therapeutic efficacy of ‘connection’ through story-telling.

The study is aimed at exploring the relationship between migration, religious affiliation and marriage patterns. Drawing on the examples of three religious groups in the USA, i.e. United Brethren (Moravians), Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) and Unification Church (Moonies) the paper seeks to answer the following questions: What were the consequences of religious migrations for family formation? How did marriage migration fit into religious patterns? What sanctioned options existed for adult migrant not in heterosexual relations? How did religious affiliation interact with national belonging? All groups fell outside the mainstream of religious practice of their day with Utopian visions that related at least somewhat to marriage patterns. All promoted family formation along religious lines and in so doing downplayed other categories of identity such as ethnicity or nationality.

The article analyzes the transformational potential of the #MeToo movement in terms of personal experience, institutional, and social transformations, looking first of all at the dynamics the movement has created in theater in Poland and around the world. The author unveils the systemic dimension of violence encoded in invisible and standardized relations of domination and subordination, inscribed in the two models which are still very common in Polish theater: the "master and apprentice" model defining the position of a director and the "feudal" model visible in institutional relations.Looking at the "Gardzienice" case and the reactions of the public to the testimonies exposing violence, the author also mentions examples of institutional and systemic reactions to similar situations in British and Belgian theater. In this way, she outlines possible directions for action in Polish theater. She asks questions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of the #MeToo movement, emphasizing the necessity to consider an intersectional perspective, to build alliances and to practice promiscuous care.

The article proposes an analysis of the performance Carte noire nommée désir by the Afro-French artist Rébecca Chaillon and situates it both in the sociohistorical context of France and in the intersectional theories of such scholars as Elsa Dorlin, Sander L. Gilman and Patricia Hill Collins. It demonstrates how Rébecca Chaillon highlights the overlap of oppressive systems, such as racism, sexism and heterosexism, and uses her own body to dismantle sexist and racist clichés. In her performance the body becomes not only a topic, but also a tool in the fight of black French women for their subjectivity and right to self-determination. The article also draws attention to other black French theatre directors and choreographers whose artistic works have been noticed on the French stage in the last 15 years. This permits the author to consider an emergence of a new type of spectacle of blackness in which race is not an ideological category (biological and unchanging) as it was in the case of the colonial spectacle, but a political and identity category (referring to a common history and experience of discrimination).

The article actualizes the issue of political correctness and the need to develop tools for its further study. Political correctness is considered in the context of gender studies and power relations. The concept of attitudes towards political correctness is revealed, and an attempt is also made to reveal the mechanism of the formation of linguistic attitudes in the mass consciousness through the prism of the concepts of Stephen Lukes and Patricia Hill Collins. The historical and theoretical foundations of the formation of intersectionality are also considered. Intersectionality is focused on the study of hierarchical differences between individuals and groups, depending on the complex intersections of their position in society, determined by many parameters. Respectively, the intersectional approach to the analysis of power and language allows us to solve a number of methodological difficulties associated with the combination of macro and micro levels, which makes possible the further empirical analysis of political correctness directly as a social phenomenon, while taking it out of the linguistic sphere. Political correctness is studied as a formal embodiment of intersectionality, taking into account all the features of cross-identity in linguistic practices. The use of the intersectional method makes it possible to reveal political correctness not only as speech prescriptions, but as a multi-component phenomenon that must be considered in close connection with various kinds of discrimination. The role of power, as the main element, in the mechanisms of interiorization of attitudes towards political correctness is revealed. We highlight the role of symbolic power in ensuring voluntary consent, which is the basis for political correctness and ensures its relatively stable nature. The possibility of using discourse analysis as one of the main methods of studying political correctness is substantiated.

This article explores the gendered narrative in the video game Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. Using this game as its main case study, it addresses the question in which ways the game developers have conceptualized gender, race, and gender performance in the video game. It does so from an intersectional point of view. After establishing Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation as a prime example of the trend to include more female characters in games during recent years, I will argue that this game includes a complex rhetoric that not only perpetuates stereotypical notions regarding gender, but also fails to acknowledge issues regarding its main protagonist’s skin color in the historical reality the game wishes to emulate.

Intersektionalität, also die Verschränkung von race, class, gender etc. vor allem in Diskursen der Ausschließung von Anderen und besonders Minderheiten, wird häufig als identitätspolitisches Moment betrachtet. Oft wird dabei behauptet, dass die genannten (und weitere) Kategorien sich in oder schon vor der Analyse nicht trennen lassen. Hier wird vorgeschlagen, zumindest bei Betrachtung intersektionaler Phänomene in der Literatur die Kategorien als getrennte zu konzipieren und erst in der Folge deren synthetisches Zusammenspiel zu analysieren.
Intersectionality, i. e. the interweaving of race, class, gender, etc., above all in discourses of exclusion of others and especially minorities, is frequently seen as an identity-political moment. It is often claimed that the above (and other) categories cannot be separated in or even before the analysis. Here it is suggested that, at least when considering intersectional phenomena in literature, the categories should be conceptualized as separate and only subsequently analyzed for their synthetic interplay.

The aim of this article is to investigate the influence of intersectional politics of recent disability drama on the conceptualization of place. My point of departure is Una Chaudhuri’s concept of geopathic place and its discussion within the context of dramaturgy of disability by Victoria Ann Lewis. In her Staging Place: The Geography of Modern Drama, Una Chaudhuri claims that ‘the geopathic paradigm underlying realist drama … supports a certain construction of identity: identity as a negotiation with – and on occasion a heroic overcoming of – the power of place’ (1997, p. 56). Victoria Ann Lewis in her 2004 article argues that artists with disabilities often ‘re-code’ identity and place as well as ‘disrupt the liberal dichotomies of individual freedom vs. confinement/prison and the related hierarchical oppositions of movement over stasis, and time over place.’ In my discussion of All of Us by Francesca Martinez, I will focus on very recent redefinitions of these oppositions and dichotomies enabled by intersectional constructions of characters and spaces. I will also trace how in exploring the relation between these two categories and human embodiment, All of Us promotes the notions of human variety and shared humanity, which prevent potential stigmatizations of characters with disabilities.

Opis:
To date, the literature on gender and migration continues a longstanding bias towards female over male experiences. Similarly, research on Polish post-EU accession emigration has not sufficiently addressed the male experiences of migration. Drawing on 20 interviews with migrant men, this paper contributes to the existing research on the variety of masculinity practices and gendered migration from the Central and Eastern Europe. In so doing, it focuses on the relationship between masculinity, religion and migration in the context of migration from Poland to the UK. While religion is also rarely addressed in discussions on the post-EU accession migration of Poles, it proves to be important in shaping world views and influencing migrants’ positionalities in the new social context. Indeed, in migrants’ narratives, gender, religion and the nation intertwine with one another. Analysis shows how certain aspects of men’s social identities that were originally assets turn into burdens and how the men reach to religion, while distance from the institutional Church, to renegotiate their new positionality in order to avoid denigration or to support social recognition – which is especially important in the social reality shaped by Brexit.

The article is a presentation of the theory of intersectionality and aims to settle it within the framework of wider scientific discourses, as well as justifying its application in the field of social work. In particular, it is about possible adaptations of intersectionality to social work curricula based on literature review and particular teaching experience of the author. An attempt will be made to evaluate critical thinking competence and its possible adaptation to the social work curriculum. The text presents authors own research findings (inspired by the theory of intersectionality) based on the analysis of twenty student essays. The analysis was based on the analytical tool – semantic gravity – coming from the Legitimation Code Theory research framework. These findings demonstrated that the Legitimation Code Theory and theory of intersectionality can serve as a basis for the cumulative knowledge building with respect to critical thinking. Legitimation Code Theory offers an analytical toolbox with potential of ensuring critical thinking and could be called ‘catalyst of the critical awareness’. The possibility of analyzing the own knowledge depending on the context of both production and application seems to be crucial competence in the contemporary social work. The ability of identifying the multidimensional and multifaceted oppression is not only cognitive ability, but also can serve as the supporting tool or competence enabling assessment of the client’s situation. Implementing critical thinking as well as the theory of intersectionality to social work curriculum is justified. On the other hand, equipping social work students with tools enabling the analysis of their own educational activities, e.g. by introducing concept of semantic gravity which allows the student to look from the outside at her own educational activities, seems crucial for professional and academic development.

Interested in the socio-cultural construction of the body and beauty, this study investigates the embodied experience of Black African women in South Africa. The Black female body has been problematically positioned in the discourses of beauty. In the dominant, Westernized imagery, the physical markers of blackness such as dark skin and kinky hair have been aesthetically devalued. In the African traditionalist discourses, these body features have been celebrated as beautiful and invoked as the signifiers of cultural pride. This, however, has also been considered as a form of cultural imperative that holds women accountable for how they embody their relationship with their race and ethnicity. Most recently, cultural critics notice the aesthetic revaluation of Black female beauty and ascribe it to the global popularity of the African-American hip-hop culture. In this study, we explore how the socio-cultural complexity of Black female beauty affects the ways in which individuals make sense of their bodies.

Sarah Gubbins and Joey Soloway’s recent series “I love Dick” – an adaptation of a cult feminist novel by Chris Kraus – demonstrates a rare, visceral grasp of the deep roots of gender oppression. The response to this oppression is intersectional, anti-racist, gender-queer empowerment and feminist desire. It’s inspiring and must be defended from (misunderstanding vis-à-vis) the perspective of the heteronormative gaze, still dominant together with the masculinist and racist gaze in the maturing 21st century. In its deviations from the novel, the screen adaptation activates intersectional connections that remain underdeveloped in the original. If the novel mines sexual oppression and gives voice to feminist desire in its raw and terrific power, I read the series as excavating sexual oppression at the intersection of sex, gender, race and class, and giving voice to (gender-)queer desire in all its fantastic force.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to reject the static approach to the categories of gender and femininity and to recognize its dynamic, contextually conditioned character showing the processes of launching specific (re)constructions of femininity as a response to the interactions and phenomena experienced in the workplace by women employed on the expansion of Opole Power Plant. The researched women negotiate their position in the employee hierarchy and “do” and “undo” their femininity depending on their particular goals which is a function of the experienced intersectionality.

This article explores the dynamic realm of transnational feminist activism, focusing on the contributions of Polish feminists in the United Kingdom. It delves into the profound ways in which these activists have engaged with and influenced the broader feminist movement within their host country. The article begins by contextualizing the rise of transnational cooperation among feminist groups, underscoring the universal relevance of issues such as violence against women, systemic discrimination, and reproductive rights. Central to this exploration is the significant wave of Polish migration to the UK post-2004, leading to a substantial Polish diaspora actively participating in feminist dialogues. This participation is further amplified by key political events in Poland, particularly in 2016 and 2020, which saw attempts by the Polish government to restrict reproductive rights, igniting protests and mobilization among Polish feminists both domestically and in the diaspora. The article provides an in-depth analysis of the multifaceted feminist activism of Polish migrants in the UK, which extends beyond the realm of reproductive rights to broader feminist and pro-democracy activities. This intersectional approach not only enriches their activism but also facilitates the exchange of ideas, strategies, and resources, creating a robust network of support and action that transcends national boundaries. Through qualitative methodologies, including in-depth ethnographic interviews with feminist activists, this study reveals the complexities of operating within transnational social fields, negotiating multiple identities, and engaging in feminist activism across borders. The findings highlight the strategic vision of Polish feminists in the UK, their responsiveness to socio-political changes in Poland, and their significant role in shaping global feminist discourses and strategies.

Opis:
This article presents our key arguments about the usefulness of the concept of superdiversity for reimagining migration in European societies, based on the example of migration from Poland to the UK. We argue that, despite some criticism of ‘superdiversity’, this concept is beneficial to avoid over-simplifications related to ethno-nationalised homogeneity as the prevailing ascribed feature of Polish migrants, offering a helpful lens through which the complexities and fluidity of contemporary migrant populations and receiving societies may be investigated. Our main point is that such the reimagination might be commenced through applying the concept of superdiversity in research on migrants from Poland in Great Britain. The concept of superdiversity is also beneficial to understand complexities associated with the urban contexts in which migrants settle, their adaptation pathways as well as the intersectional factors shaping migrants’ lives and experiences.

A Basic Income (universal basic income or citizen’s income) could contribute to the means for living a dignified ecologically- and socially-aligned life characterized by well-being, freedom, and equality. After laying out key definitions, I reflect on moral and ethical issues regarding Basic Income’s implementation, backed by supportive theory and evidence. These arguments organise around interdependence in eco-social systems and core requirements of ontogenesis as well as the intersection and intertwining of socio-cultural, political, and economic factors, known as socio-ecological determinants of global health and well-being. Following that, I briefly make the case for why intersectional and intersubjective aspects should be closely held in contextualized view of Basic Income’s democratised drafting and provision.

You should/mustn’t be a mother: intersectionalities of gender and sexuality within non-heteronormative women familiesIn this paper I aim to illustrate the intersectionality of sexuality and gender within non-heteronormative women families with usage of intersectionality framework from the classical text of K. Crenshaw Mapping the margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color, which analyzes the structural, political and representational intersectionalities. This article explores the practices and discourses of environmental justice in Iranian Kurdistan/Rojhelat. In the face of unprecedented destruction of the natural environment, Kurdish people, including a significant number of women, organise themselves to defend ecosystems, lakes, rivers, and forests, making them part of the global environmental justice movement. Local communities face growing challenges such as water scarcity, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, exploitation of natural resources, and pollution, which directly affect their lives and health. Drawing on decolonial and critical perspectives of environmental justice studies, we ask how Kurdish activists understand the concepts of “justice” and “environment” in the context of discriminatory practices of the capitalist, patriarchal, and authoritarian Iranian state. Based on interviews and fieldwork in the region, this article argues that the global environmental justice movement should pay closer attention to the contextual realities of the subaltern, their aims and ideas related to nature, justice, and women empowerment.

Chubby, hairy and fearless : subcultural identities and predictors of self-esteem in a sample of Polish members of bear community

Bear subculture exists within a larger gay community, which has been recognized by public health experts as disproportionately burdened with stigma and related health adversities. Bears are distinguished by a particular body look—body hirsuteness and heavy-set physique. Previous research documented the various health risks, and the exposure to both sexual minority and weight stigma, of this population. In this study we focused on the determinants of self-esteem in Bears. We explored the significance of such predictors as: perceived sexual minority and weight stigma, age, resilience, and physique as reflected by the BMI. Our sample consisted of 60 men from the Polish Bear community (i.e., Bears, Cubs, Otters,Wolves). Linear regression models were performed for the entire sample (N = 60) and for Bear-identified men (N = 31). Perceived sexual minority stigma negatively, and resilience positively, predicted self-esteem. In the case of Bear-identified men, age, perceived exposure to weight discrimination, and BMI were also significant predictors of self-esteem. Higher BMI in the case of Bear-identified men predicted higher self-esteem. Our results suggest that although Bear-identified men are characterized by their similarities to other gay men, subcultural identities create unique social contexts that are important for health and health interventions in this population.

"Spoza centrum widać więcej - przeciwdziałanie dyskryminacji krzyżowej" is a continuation of the 2011-2012 Women’s Space Foundation research project "Niewidoczne (dla) społeczności" [Invisible (to) the societies]. In "Niewidoczne (dla) społeczności" the key ideas allowing us to understand and describe the situation of our respondents and participants were: metronormativity (in relation to the ‘sexual politics’ present in the activities and activism of the LGBT movement and NGOs) and multiple discrimination (in reference to the daily functioning of lesbians and bisexual women in the societies of small towns and villages). In the next project, „Spoza centrum” we decided to turn to more participatory methods. The goal of this project was above all to deepen what is known about the situation of non-heterosexual women from non-urban areas, and also to work out alternatives to the city-centered perspective present in social activism as well as to look for solutions to the problems of the multipli discrimination faced by this group. Of key importance in coming up with common solutions was the inclusion of various groups of women.
Projekt "Spoza centrum widać więcej - przeciwdziałanie dyskryminacji krzyżowej" jest kontynuacją projektu "Niewidoczne (dla) społeczności" (2011-2012), którego celem było zbadanie sytuacji społecznej i problemu dyskryminacji nieheteroseksualnych kobiet mieszkających poza dużymi ośrodkami miejskimi i na terenach wiejskich. Efektem działań podejmowanych w ramach projektu jest niniejsza publikacja. Prezentowany raport adresowany jest do szerokiego grona odbiorców i odbiorczyń, przy czym szczególną grupę adresatek stanowią dla nas te grupy kobiet, których przedstawicielki wzięły udział w organizowanych w ramach projektu spotkaniach. Są to aktywistki feministyczne, działaczki lokalne, osoby zaangażowane w ruch LGBT, kobiety nieheteronormatywne - mieszkanki małych miejscowości. Liczymy także, że publikacja trafi do edukatorów i edukatorek, trenerów i trenerek antydyskryminacyjnych i umożliwi szerokie rozpoznanie problemu dyskryminacji krzyżowej i miejskocentryczności. W strukturze raportu wyróżniłyśmy dwie główne części: Od badań do działań oraz Przewodniczka po działaniach niemiejskocentrycznych na rzecz i z osobami LGBT.

Feminist critique of democracy leads to the articulation of numerous proposals to change its institutional mechanisms to be more inclusive and emancipatory. Increasing importance is attributed not only to quantitative representation but also to the quality of public debate. In the article, we demonstrate how recent efforts to transcend the distinction between descriptive and substantive representation of women can face criticism from the perspective of intersectional theory. By analyzing the example of the ‘second-generation feminist institutional design,’ a model proposed by Karen Celis and Sarah Childs, we assess the compatibility of these ideas with deliberative theory and its practice. Ultimately, we circle back to the challenge posed by the intersectional approach to power and equality, aiming to delineate the boundaries of the emancipatory and inclusive potential of deliberative practices. The critique presented by intersectionality underscores that while such innovations might enhance equality in certain aspects, their inherent design will inadvertently perpetuate inequalities in other domains.

Towards gender equality in research and academia : conceptualising and practising inclusive mentorship through community building, co-creation and art-based methods

This paper explores inclusive mentoring as a transformative tool for promoting gender equality in European academia and research. It reflects on the work of COST Action VOICES, which addresses systemic barriers and inequalities disproportionately affecting women and marginalised groups. The paper critically examines mentorship programmes, highlighting power imbalances, intersectionality and the role of participatory, co-creative and art-based approaches in reshaping mentoring practices. Drawing on collaborative initiatives led by VOICES, the paper presents findings from an exploratory mentoring mapping exercise. Additionally, it reflects on the inclusive mentoring summer training held in Bilbao in 2024. Art-based methods and participatory co-creation workshops were employed to capture lived experiences of mentors and mentees, resulting in the development of ten guiding principles for inclusive mentoring. The paper reveals significant inconsistencies in the availability, sustainability and evaluation of mentoring programmes across Europe. It identifies key challenges, including unequal access, lack of intersectional approaches and limited institutional support. Despite these barriers, inclusive mentoring models emphasising reciprocity and reverse mentoring show promise in enabling resilience, psychological safety and systemic change. The co-creation of guiding principles reflects a collective vision for mentoring as a tool for empowerment and solidarity. This paper offers a novel contribution by integrating intersectional feminist approaches with art-based and participatory methods to redefine mentoring. It underscores the necessity of nurturing mentoring frameworks as dynamic ecosystems, requiring continuous care and collaboration to sustain progress in equality, diversity and inclusion.

The article offers an analysis of living with a fat body and ways of experiencing it in everyday life in the context of stigmatization of this type of corporality. Biographical interviews with fat people of varying socio-demographic profiles were conducted. The analyses show that having a fat body/being fat is generally a stigma that discredits the individual in the eyes of the so-called normals based on both physical characteristics and character traits allegedly associated with fatness. The participants mainly medicalize and internalize the stigma of fatness and manage it specifically by passing, covering, and coming out. In transgender people, fatness may never take on the characteristics of a stigma, but instead allows the individual to obscure another stigma or conform to social expectations of appearance in line with the gender identity.

The subjects of the analysis are selected narratives of queer Muslims and narratives of selected NGOs’ directed to them.
Problemem badawczym niniejszej pracy jest zagadnienie relacji zachodzących pomiędzy identyfikacją religijną a orientacją seksualną i/lub tożsamością płciową muzułmanów LGBTQ+, jak również stosunek ich społeczności religijnej oraz społeczności queerowej względem nich. Analizie poddane zostały wybrane narracje queerowych muzułmanów, jak również narracje wybranych organizacji pozarządowych.

Celem artykułu jest zbadanie wzmacniających możliwości indywidualnych przedstawień złożonych tożsamości aktywistów, mogących prowadzić do zwiększenia poparcia dla kolektywnych celów aktywistek zainteresowanych zagadnieniami związanymi ze zdrowiem.
The article looks at the intersectional performances of activist identity online. By tracing the work of Evelyn C., the article considers the position of emergent experts among the peer supporters and bloggers in online communities centred on perinatal mental health and breastfeeding. Through this, it seeks to explore the augmenting possibilities embodied in individual performances of complex activist identities for collective advancement of identity-based health-concerned activist groups.

The article applies intersectional theory to the analysis of recent films by Black American women filmmakers. It examines how multiple discrimina-tion, which occurs at the intersection of race and gender, shapes the daily experiences of the protagonists in "Pariah" (2011, dir. Dee Rees), "Jezebel" (2019, dir. Numa Perrier), and "Farewell Amor" (2020, dir. Ekwa Msangi). The article examines their portrayal of Black womanhood, freedom of expression of minority identities, and modes of resistance against systemic oppression. It also reflects on the position of female filmmakers of color within American cinema.
Celem artykułu jest analiza niedawnych filmów czarnych amerykańskich reżyserek w kluczu intersekcjonalnym. Pozwoli ona zbadać, w jaki sposób wielokrotna dyskryminacja, do której dochodzi jednocześnie ze względu na rasę i płeć, kształtuje codzienne doświadczenia bohaterek filmów "Parias" (Pariah, 2011, reż. Dee Rees), "Jezebel" (2019, reż. Numa Perrier) oraz "Żegnaj, moja miłości" (Farewell Amor, 2020, reż. Ekwa Msangi). Artykuł podejmuje również kwestie związane z obrazowaniem czarnej kobiecości, swobodną ekspresją mniejszościowych tożsamości oraz oporem w sytuacji systemowego ucisku. Opis:
Celem artykułu jest wprowadzenie w tematykę numeru specjalnego poświęconego zaprezentowaniu znaczenia płci, która w relacji z niepełnosprawnością i innymi czynnikami demograficzno-społecznymi wpływa na konstruowane tożsamości i wypełniane role społeczne osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Wymagało to przedstawienia obecnych w tradycji badań nad niepełnosprawnością nurtów metodologicznych i prześledzenia dominujących współcześnie podejść badawczych. Analiza ta pozwoliła zauważyć odchodzenie w ostatnich dekadach od traktowania niepełnosprawności jako nadrzędnej kategorii umożliwiającej wyjaśnienie wszystkich aspektów funkcjonowania osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Zastąpiło ją dostrzeganie wzajemnego wpływu różnych czynników demograficznych i społecznych determinujących położenie społeczne osób z niepełnosprawnościami. Ten trend dostrzegalny jest w badaniach nad płcią prowadzonych w ramach studiów nad niepełnosprawnością. Odrzucają one podejście esencjalistyczne i podążają w kierunku analiz o charakterze konstruktywistycznym i intersekcjonalnym. Takie podejście pozwala na ukazanie wielowymiarowości i złożoności samego zjawiska niepełnosprawności, które wymyka się prostej dychotomii sprawny/niepełnosprawny.
The aim of the article is to introduce the subject of this special issue devoted to showing the meaning of gender, which – in relation to disability and other demographic and social factors – affects the constructed identities and fulfilled social roles of people with disabilities. This undertaking required demonstrating the methodological trends that are present in the tradition of research on disability, as well as following the research approaches that seem to predominate today. The analysis made it possible to notice a departure in recent decades from treating disability as the superior category that allows one to explain all the aspects of the functioning of people with disabilities. Such a category has been replaced by the perception of the mutual influence of various demographic and social factors determining the social situation of people with disabilities. This trend is noticeable in gender studies conducted as part of disability studies. They reject the essentialist approach and move towards constructivist and intersectional analyses. Such an attitude makes it possible to reveal the multidimensionality and complexity of the phenomenon of disability itself, which – in relation to a person – eludes the simple ‘able/disabled’ dichotomy.

In the bachelor thesis Performances of gender and class in the novel ‘The end of Eddy’ by Édouard Louis I analyze and interpret particular phenomena related to gender and class theories. I am interested in how violence, class and gender occur in the space of a piece. I research Édouard Louis, his experiences and trauma. I focus on who the author and the protagonist are, I wonder what he is doing and what is happening to him. I define a book through the category of intersectionality, paying attention to the habits of the main character and his family. I am writing about the ruling stereotypes in the novel. I am using Judith Butler's theory of performing one's own identity and figuring out how Louis' gender occurs on the body.

Skupiam się nad tym kim jest autor, a zarazem bohater, zastanawiam się co robi i co się z nim dzieje. From Discrimination to Equal Pay For African American Women
Od dyskryminacji do równych płac dla Afroamerykanek

Whereas there has been a significant progress in the United States of America in order to combat racism and gender discrimination, the fight remains. This thesis focuses on analyzing how the African American community has evolved in their social status since the abolition of slavery and the elimination of segregation one century later. Although over half of the pay gap is based on different occupations and 10% on work experience, around 40% still remains unexplained. What is particular about their situation and the importance of this topic is the fact that African American women do not only experience discrimination based on their gender or their race, but on both at the same time (the so-called intersectionality).In the thesis it is argued that the most blatant discrimination has been eliminated with anti-discrimination laws, especially with the passage of Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act of 1964 and 1965, respectively, and some Executive Orders up until President Obama’s administration. Nevertheless, after looking into the current situation of African American women, it can be seen that the legislative process to achieve equality is far from being over and several suggestions are presented such as the push in Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in order to assure more guarantees for the African American workers.
Chociaż w Stanach Zjednoczonych nastąpił znaczny postęp w walce z rasizmem i dyskryminacją ze względu na płeć, walka nadal trwa. Niniejsza rozprawa koncentruje się na analizie ewolucji statusu społecznego społeczności Afroamerykanów od czasu zniesienia niewolnictwa i wyeliminowania segregacji sto lat później. Chociaż ponad połowa różnic w wynagrodzeniach wynika z różnych zawodów i 10% z doświadczenia zawodowego, około 40% nadal pozostaje niewyjaśnionych. To, co jest szczególne w ich sytuacji i znaczenie tego tematu, to fakt, że Afroamerykanki doświadczają dyskryminacji nie tylko ze względu na płeć lub rasę, ale z obu powodów jednocześnie (tzw. intersekcjonalność).W pracy dyplomowej argumentuje się, że najbardziej rażąca dyskryminacja została wyeliminowana dzięki przepisom antydyskryminacyjnym, zwłaszcza dzięki uchwaleniu Ustawy o prawach obywatelskich i Ustawy o prawach do głosowania z 1964 i 1965 roku, a także niektórym zarządzeniom wykonawczym aż do administracji prezydenta Obamy. Niemniej jednak, po przyjrzeniu się obecnej sytuacji afroamerykańskich kobiet, można zauważyć, że proces legislacyjny mający na celu osiągnięcie równości jest daleki od zakończenia i przedstawiono kilka sugestii, takich jak nacisk w Kongresie na przyjęcie ustawy Paycheck Fairness Act i Domestic Workers Bill of Rights w celu zapewnienia większych gwarancji dla afroamerykańskich pracowników.

In the summer of 1912, James Joyce spent several weeks in Galway, visiting Nora Barnacle’s family and writing essays for Il Piccolo della Sera. Two essays produced during his stay in the West of Ireland are directly concerned with the region and its inhabitants: one describes the past and present of Galway city and the other is an account of his trip to Aranmor, the biggest Aran Island off the west coast of Galway. Joyce’s selective focus on the past glories of those places and utopian vistas connected with the development of the Galway Harbour is interesting as a counterpoint to the notion of the West of Ireland, shared by representatives of the Anglo-Irish Revival who saw a relatively homogeneous repository of traditional Celtic values in the region. Joyce’s journalistic representation of Galway and Aran deserves attention also because it anticipates late twentieth-century emphasis on hybridity, miscegenation and transcultural mobility. Finally, Joyce’s two 1912 essays are a significant reflection of his own fluctuating attitudes to Ireland and its history, at a point when he was gradually abandoning his epideictic rhetoric of “Ireland, Island of Saints and Sages” to embrace a more cosmopolitan view of the West of Ireland as a milieu shaped by various European influences.
Latem 1912 roku James Joyce spędził kilka tygodni w Galway, odwiedzając rodzinę Nory Barnacle, a także przygotowując artykuły dla triesteńskiego Il Piccolo della Sera. Dwa teksty, które wówczas powstały, dotyczą bezpośrednio zachodu Irlandii – regionu Galway i jego mieszkańców. Jeden z nich opisuje przeszłość i teraźniejszość samego miasta Galway, natomiast drugi stanowi relację z wycieczki Joyce’a do Aranmor, największej z Wysp Arańskich leżących na zachód od Galway. Joyce wybiera z przeszłości regionu elementy stanowiące powód do dumy dla jego mieszkańców, opisując także perspektywy rozwoju zachodniego wybrzeża Irlandii w związku z planem rozbudowy miejscowego portu (the Galway Harbour Scheme). Takie spojrzenie na zachód Irlandii stanowi istotny kontrapunkt w stosunku do wizji regionu przedstawianej w twórczości przedstawicieli Irlandzkiego Odrodzenia, którzy dostrzegali tam przede wszystkim skarbnicę tradycyjnych wartości „celtyckich” o stosunkowo jednorodnym charakterze. Dziennikarskie spojrzenie na Galway i Wyspy Arańskie zasługuje na uwagę współczesnego czytelnika tekstów Joyce’a, ponieważ antycypuje kluczowe znaczenie zyskujących popularność dopiero pod koniec XX wieku kategorii, takich jak hybrydowość czy mobilność transkulturowa. I wreszcie artykuły Joyce’a napisane dla Il Piccolo della Sera w 1912 roku dostarczają wartościowego materiału do refleksji nad zmieniającą się perspektywą pisarza na Irlandię i jej historię, powstały bowiem w okresie, kiedy Joyce stopniowo odchodził od retoryki charakteryzującej wykład z 1907 roku pt. „Irlandia – wyspa świętych i mędrców”, zmierzając w kierunku znacznie bardziej kosmopolitycznego postrzegania zachodu Irlandii jako przestrzeni w istotny sposób kształtowanej przez rozmaite wpływy europejskie.

Rozwój idei na przestrzeni lat jest przedstawiony na przykładzie państw Zachodu i Polski. Kolejno następuje zarysowanie współczesnego obszaru badawczego, z naciskiem na feminist media studies. Ukazanie rozwoju badań umożliwia zapoznanie się z aktualnymi wyzwaniami dyscypliny, zaznaczając fundamentalną rolę krytyki feministycznej przy odczytywaniu przekazów medialnych. Ostatnia część pracy skupia się na feministycznych mediów na przykładzie czasopism i form aktywności internetowych, podkreślając ich niejednoznaczną rolę w kształtowaniu się świadomości społecznej.
Feminist media critique and feminist media studies are the foundation of this case study. First, it presents selected elements of the theory and issues with three waves of feminism. The development of thoughts over the years is illustrated with the example of Western countries and Poland. The contemporary research area is outlined afterward, emphasizing feminist media studies. By showing the development of research, it is possible to get acquainted with the current challenges of the discipline from the perspective of feminism. The last part of the work concerns feminist media using the example of magazines and forms of online activity, highlighting their ambiguous role in shaping social awareness.

Although U.S. women’s contributions to farming are vital, scholarship on U.S. female farmers is limited, especially in the U.S. South. Twelve women farmers in the Southern United States were interviewed about their experiences and opportunities in production agriculture. This study offers further nuance of the sociological and theoretical complexity and interpretive power of difference feminism and intersectionality, focusing on region and place, to a concept we call Southern Rural Feminism. Participants promote women’s equality yet acknowledge gender differences between the binary gender categories of men and women, where the uniqueness of a woman’s touch offers value to the agriculture industry. Nearly all participants’ everyday life in southern agriculture was grounded in the participants’ Christian faith, and some women used Christianity to explain gender dynamics. Within the context of the traditional rural southern culture, all women experienced differential gendered treatment in the industry, from welcomed gentlemanly behavior and gendered slights to more severe discrimination and harassment. Despite widespread gender problems, findings suggest most women do not view systematic gender oppression in the industry, do not adhere to feminist labels, and are cautiously optimistic about the future of female farmers. Incorporating theoretical discussions of Southern Rural Feminism is vital given U.S. Southern Farm Women’s restricted material access to land, and full participation in production agriculture, a field with tremendous gender inequities.

W  artykule przedstawiono krytyczne podejście do koncepcji różnorodności i wielokulturowości jako sposobów pracy na rzecz równości społecznej. Tekst ma charakter porównawczy i przeglądowy, odwołuje się do różnych prac badawczych, które wykorzystują przekrojowe/intersekcjonalne modele pojęcia różnorodności i wielokulturowości oraz podkreślają znaczenie analizy relacji władzy w społeczeństwie. Zaprezentowane w artykule rozważania pozwalają dojść do wniosku, że jednym z najważniejszych celów edukacji jest praca na rzecz bardziej sprawiedliwego społeczeństwa, pedagogika krytyczna – zarówno na gruncie teorii, jak i praktyki, jest niezbędna do osiągnięcia tego celu, a modele intersekcjonalne/przekrojowe postrzegać można jako podstawową soczewkę dla badań edukacyjnych.
The paper discusses critiques of the concepts of diversity and multiculturalism as ways to work towards social equity. The paper is a comparative review paper, discussing different research papers which apply an intersectional framework on the notion of diversity and multiculturalism and emphasise the importance of analysing power relations in society. The position of the paper is that one of the most important purposes of education is to work towards a more just society, and it suggests that critical pedagogy is an essential theoretical and practical approach to fulfil this aim. Different research articles are discussed and the intersectional framework is suggested as an essential lens for educational research.

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę reprezentacji pojęcia czułości we współczesnej poezjiamerykańskiej autorstwa osób transpłciowych i niebinarnych. Analizuję związkek międzyczułością w oparciu o koncept „czułego narratora” omawiany przez Olgę Tokarczuk, często wpołączeniu z innymi tożsamościami autorów rozpatrywanymi pod kątem intersekcjonalności.Rozdział pierwszy zawiera próbę zdefiniowania czułości na potrzeby mojej pracy orazwykorzystane w analizie metody krytyki literackiej. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest analiziewybranych wierszy z dwóch kolekcji – Grit (2020) autorstwa Silasa Denvera Melvina orazWater I Won’t Touch (2021) autorstwa Kayleb Rae Candrilli – i antologii Troubling the Line:Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics (2013) zedytowanej przez TC Tolbert and TracePeterson. Ostatni rozdział zawiera zarówno wnioski z przeprowadzonej przeze mnie analizy,jak i szersze implikacje dla dyskusji poświęconej transgender studies w kręgachakademickich i dla szerszego grona czytelników.
This thesis aims to examine how the concept of tenderness is represented in contemporaryAmerican poetry by transgender and non-binary authors. My study explores the connectionsbetween tenderness based on the concept of “the tender narrator” as discussed by OlgaTokarczuk and various experiences of transness, often additionally linked with the authors’other intersecting identities. The first chapter contains the construction of a working definitionof tenderness for the purpose of my study, as well as discusses the specific criticalframeworks used to analyse the poems. The second chapter is devoted to selected poems fromtwo poetry collections – Grit (2020) by Silas Denver Melvin and Water I Won’t Touch (2021)by Kayleb Rae Candrilli – and a poetry anthology featuring various poets, Troubling the Line:Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics (2013), edited by TC Tolbert and Trace Peterson.The third and final chapter consists of the conclusions of my research, as well as the widerimplications for the discussion of transgender studies, both within academia and widerreadership.

You can knock on the doors and windows of the university, but nobody will care : how universities benefit from network silence around gender-based violence

This paper exposes the role of universities in creating silence around gender-based violence in higher education, drawing on narratives from 39 qualitative interviews with victims/survivors and bystanders about reporting incidents and experiences. In this paper, we extend concept of ‘network silence’ around sexual harassment to other forms of gender-based violence. Our research applies three components of the theoretical model of network silence, namely, self-silencing by victims/survivors, silencing, and not hearing by others, and analyses their contextual manifestations through the reporting experiences of victims/survivors and bystanders. This helps to identify the traits of the informal organisational structures and power dynamics, gendered attitudes, actors, and factors which facilitate silencing. The intersectional approach in our analysis of organisational contextual traits contributes to the research on inequality regimes in universities. The findings suggest that universities are making limited efforts to address silence around gender-based violence. We conclude that shared beliefs among the leadership about the reputation and prestige of the university facilitate the endurance of silence in universities. Our findings indicate reasons why universities fail to create spaces that are safe from gender-based violence.

W moim artykule próbuję odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jaki sposób polski feminizm mógłby poszerzać wiedzę i włączać w obszar swoich działań mieszkanki wsi. W tym celu przywołuję teorie z obszaru czarnej myśli feministycznej oraz postkolonializmu, które problematyzują epistemologię podporządkowanych. Aby renegocjować reżimy widzialności, które ograniczają naszą wyobraźnię, proponuję aplikację tych narzędzi do analizy popkulturowych reprezentacji wsi (film dokumentalny Warszawa do wzięcia oraz serial dokumentalny Chłopaki do wzięcia). Czerpiąc z teorii marginesu bell hooks, postkolonialnych krytyk Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak oraz idei wiedz usytuowanych autorstwa Donny Haraway, pomagających nam wzbogacać wiedzę o różnych rodzajach opresji i ich intersekcjonalności, chciałabym skierować uwagę czytelniczek na te wymiary seksizmu, które nie mieszczą się być może w wąskich ramach definicji „problemów kobiet z dużych miast”.
In my article I am trying to explore ways in which Polish feminism can expand its knowledge about woman living in the countryside. To this purposeI recall theories from black feminist thought and postcolonial studies which help to enrich subaltern epistemologies. To renegotiate regimes of visibility, which limit our imagination, I use these theories to analyze pop culture representations of rurality(documentary Warszawa do wzięcia and docusoap Chłopaki do wzięcia). Referring to bell hooks’ theory of the margin and to postcolonial writings of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Donna Haraway’s concept of situated knowledges, which all help to develop our knowledge about different kinds of oppression and their inter sectionality, I want to draw attention to these dimensions of sexism which don’t fit into rigid categories of “problems faced by woman from big cities”.

A meeting with the Other is related to the attitude of interest, dialogue, cooperation and understanding. However, negative reactions to otherness may give rise to different attitudes as well. These include discrimination and exclusion. In this article, the problem of multiple discrimination is addressed and intersectionality is presented as both an important method in intercultural research and an idea worth raising and developing in the practice of intercultural education. Multiple discrimination pertains to people who experience two or more forms of oppression at the same time (due to gender and disability; due to disability and residence place; due to ethnic origin, gender and place of residence, etc.). Intersectionality introduces a new quality to intercultural studies. As a research paradigm, it enables a critical analysis of these areas of exclusion and discrimination which have so far been shown mainly from the perspective of the needs and views of majority groups. Intersectional analysis can also become useful in educational practice: in preparing individualized assistance programs for people affected by discrimination, as well as in creating preventive projects to keep stigmatization and discrimination away.
Spotkanie z Innym wiąże się z postawą zainteresowania, dialogu, współpracy i zrozumienia. Jednak negatywne reakcje na inność mogą rodzić także odmienne postawy. Należą do nich dyskryminacja oraz wykluczenie. W artykule podjęto problem dyskryminacji wielokrotnej (multiple discrimination), a także przedstawiono intersekcjonalność jako metodę ważną w badaniach międzykulturowych oraz ideę, którą warto poruszać i rozwijać w praktyce edukacji międzykulturowej. Przegląd teorii oraz wybrane projekty badawcze zostały przygotowane na potrzeby tego artykułu. Dyskryminacja wielokrotna dotyczy osób, które doświadczają jednocześnie dwóch lub więcej form opresji (ze względu na płeć i niepełnosprawność; ze względu na niepełnosprawność i miejsce zamieszkania; ze względu na pochodzenie etniczne, płeć i miejsce zamieszkania itp.). Intersekcjonalność wprowadza nową jakość do badań międzykulturowych. Jako paradygmat badawczy umożliwia przeprowadzenie krytycznej analizy tych obszarów ekskluzji i dyskryminacji, które dotychczas ukazywane były głównie z perspektywy potrzeb i oglądu grup większościowych. Analiza intersekcjonalna może także stać się przydatną w praktyce edukacyjnej: do przygotowania zindywidualizowanych programów pomocowych wobec osób dotkniętych dyskryminacją, a także w celu tworzenia profilaktycznych projektów zapobiegania postawom stygmatyzacji i dyskryminacji.
