Opis:
The interest in phenols and anthocyanins has increased due to their antioxidant properties and to their potential usage as dietary antioxidants in human nutrition. Total phenols and anthocyanin content, composition and stability in berry extracts of blackcurrant interspecific hybrids, and antioxidative activity of extracts was evaluated. Berries of interspecific hybrids accumulated 530 to 614 mg 100 g-1 FW of total phenolic compounds, while 621 mg 100 g-1 FW of phenolics was established in berries of control Ribes nigrum cultivar 'Ben Tirran'. 'Ben Tirran' berries accumulated 444 mg 100 g-1 FW of anthocyanins and higher amount was identified in berries of interspecific hybrids No. 11-13 (R. nigrum × R. petraeum) and No. 57 (R. nigrum × R. aureum), 522 and 498 mg100 g-1 FW respectively. Berry extracts of hybrid No. 11-13 distinguished by the highest antioxidative activity (80%) and it was higher than antioxidant activity of 'Ben Tirran' (70%). Antioxidative activity of all tested berry extracts (70-80%) was twice higher compared to synthetic antioxidant BHT (39%). However correlation between phenolics or total anthocyanin content and antioxidative activity degree was not established. Amount of cyanidin 3-O-glucoside and cyanidin 3-O-rutinoside in berries of hybrids No. 57, No. 11-13 and No. 8 ((R. nigrum × R. americanum) × (R. nigrum × R. americanum)) was higher than in berries of 'Ben Tirran'. It was established that cyanidins are more stable anthocyanins in all studied temperature and irradiation conditions. Therefore interspecific hybrids No. 57 and No. 11-13 were the most agronomically valuable hybrids.

W nocy przy pomocy noktowizji oraz w dzień bezpośrednio prowadzono na określonych stanowiskach obserwacje gryzoni. Stanowiska te poza kabiną, z której prowadzono obserwacje i w której mieściło się odpowiednie wyposażenie techniczne, posiadały dodatkowo stale dostępną przynentę w postaci ziaren owsa, wykładaną w karmniku. Wejścia gryzoni do karmnika rejestrowane były automatycznie.

Opis:
16-chromosome forms of red clover (2n=14+2) were crossed to six Trifolium species with the chromosome number 2n=16. Hybrid plants were derived from the cross of a stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense with T. diffusum (2n=16). No seeds were obtained from reciprocal crosses. F₁ hybrid plants were morphologically more similar to T. diffusum, whereas their other characters, e.g. flower number per head, were intermediate between the species crossed. All F₁ hybrids had the chromosome number 2n=16. Meiosis proceeded with large irregularities. The average number of bivalents per cell was 3.32, and that of univalents - 9.98. Univalents exhibited a high stickiness and frequently formed "end-to-end" configurations and chains consisting of about a dozen of so chromosomes. Bivalents were straight. Lagging chromosomes and chromosome bridges were observed during AI; lagging chromosomes were also found during AII. After an equalizing division, tetrads and different from them microspore polyads were formed. 16-chromosome hybrids were male- and female-sterile. No hybrids were obtained from the stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense (n=7 chromosomes) crossed to the selected clover species (T. apertum Bobr., T. alexandrinum L. and others) with n=8 chromosomes.

Opis:
Competition for food can be observed in the macroplankton community in the Vistula Lagoon (northern Poland) in the spring (April-May-June). This is the time of mass occurrence of early developmental stages of the Baltic Sea herring, the European smelt perch, and stickleback. Additionally, some quantities of the shrimp Neomysis integer can be found. These species use the same food resources, i.e. small zooplankton, but they occupy different habitats. However, in a very special situation in the Vistula Lagoon (low depth and water mixing by winds) they are living together and compete for food. The purpose of this paper is to find out which species is the superior competitor for food among the macroplankton living in the Vistula Lagoon. Animal size (dry weight Dw), daily consumption rate (C), and coefficients of food assimilation efficiency (U-1), as well as utilization of consumed energy for growth (K1), and utilization of assimilated energy for growth (K2) by individuals of particular species were used as measures of individual success in competition for food. Animal abundance (n m-3), daily consumption rate of individuals of particular species living in the unit of water volume (J m-3 d-1), and total food consumed by animals of particular species living in the unit of water volume as a percent of the total food available were used as measures of population (or species) success in competition for food. The re¬sults do not provide a clear indication which species is a superior competitor for food. Because competition occurs at the level of individuals rather than populations, a question arises why just Neomysis, despite their lowest food consumption and the lowest daily production rate succeeded in reaching high population numbers and sum of daily food consumption by population.

Opis:
In the years 1964-1994 an extensive programme of wide hybridization within Ihe. Lolium-Festuca complex was carried out in Poland. Six Lolium (ryegrass) and five Festuca (fescue) species at different ploidy level were used for crosses. Hybrids were obtained from 72 cross combinations: 19 interspecific (five Lolium × Lolium and 14 Festuca × Festuca), 51 intergeneric (39 Lolium × Festuca and 12 Festuca × Lolium) and two trispecific (Lolium × Festuca × Festuca), most of them being derived from crosses of four important forage grass species: Lolium multiflorum, L. perenne, Festuca pratensis and F. arundinacea. Interspecific and intergeneric Lolium-F estuca hybrids from 50 cross combinations are maintained at present in the collection of the Institute of Plant Genetics in Poznań. This article presents a complete list of Lolium-Festuca hybrids obtained in Poland in the years 1964-1994 and maintained in the collection. The available literature concerning these hybrids is cited.

Authors investigated the reaction of bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) to odors of conspecific individuals and that of wood mice Apodemus sylvaticus (Linnaeus, 1758) in a mature forest in central Poland (52°20'N, 27°25'E). Our results show no difference in catching bank voles in traps using conspecific or wood mouse odors as bait.

Opis:
Our study involved the first-ever evaluation of the performance of anther culture and wheat × maize hybridization techniques in producing haploids or doubled haploids as a result of spontaneous doubling of the chromosome number during androgenesis in plants from 30 wheat genotypes including ancient, local and modern types. The results indicated that the best induction rates of androgenic structures and haploid embryos for the hexaploid and tetraploid wheat genotypes were obtained with anther culture and wheat × maize hybridization, respectively. Whereas only one regenerated plant from 15 genotypes of tetraploid wheat was obtained, 13 plants were regenerated from 15 genotypes of hexaploid wheat. Moreover, haploid embryos obtained in wheat × maize hybridization 60 and 100% green plants regenerated in relation to the number of the cultured haploid embryos. Genotypes with high induction capacity to produce androgenic structure or haploid embryos did not have desired haploid plantlets regeneration capacity and vice-versa. However, with both methods, hexaploid wheat genotypes had a considerable ability to produce green plants. Doubled haploid plants were obtained from ancient and local wheat genotypes by both methods, but not from modern wheat. Those genotypes can be used as parents in future wheat breeding programs and new varieties may be obtained by selecting pure lines in wheat populations.
