Opis:
Youth develop their competence to build intimate relationships during adolescence. The aim of this project is to explore what adolescents experience regarding the social perception of their intimate relationships. The method of data collection was an individual in-depth interview and the method of data analysis was conventional content analysis. The group of participants in the study consisted of 22 adolescents (12 girls and 10 boys), aged between 14 and 19 years, who had experienced at least one intimate relationship during adolescence lasting at least one month. Participants could currently be in an intimate relationship or be single. Content analysis identified four main categories: 1) “It’s not  a relationship, it’s just fun”; 2) “It’s not true love”; 3) “It won’t last very long”; 4) “You’ll get behind in school because of it!”. The results confirm that teenagers face stereotypical beliefs about their relationships. The results indicate the need to raise public awareness of the role of intimate relationships in young people’s development and to support adolescents in this vital area of interpersonal functioning.

Opis:
Sex education and conversations about intimate relationships are generally regarded to be important and can contribute to young women’s positive or negative reproductive health development and general well-being. The findings contained in this article suggest that in a resource poor South African township, mothers and their daughters struggle to initiate and conduct meaningful discussions about sex. These discussions are often framed in terms of possible negative consequences of intimate relationships, such as unplanned pregnancy, dropping out of school, or possible Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. However, these discussions are clearly not altogether effective as several young research participants had an unplanned baby. Emotional aspects that are normally associated with intimate relationships are missing from the mother-daughter conversations.

"I wouldnt have done it to my parents…" : interfaith intimate relationships in Indian large cities
"Nie zrobiłabym tego moim rodzicom…" : międzyreligijne związki intymne w indyjskich metropoliach
Autorzy:
Romanowicz, Anna
Opis:
This article addresses the role of interfaith relationships in the contemporary political and socio‑cultural landscape of India. Marriages between adherents of different religions are extremely rare, accounting for only 1% of the Indian population (Pew Research Center 2021a). Nevertheless, they are prominently present in public debate, where they are portrayed often as a "threat". The main aim of the article is to demonstrate the impact of the politicization of intimate relationships between Muslims and Hindus on the everyday lives of members of the India’s urban middle class. The article is based on ethnographic field research conducted in Delhi and Mumbai.

Heterosexual intimate relationships as a developmental task in young adulthoodHuman development in the life cycle can be described in terms of some developmental achievements. In line with this pragmatic perspective, we can refer to concept of developmental tasks proposed by Havighurst. According to his theory people progress through a series of developmental stages, which pose particular tasks and challenges. One of the main developmental tasks of young adults is to enter and maintain a heterosexual intimate relationship which is a prerequisite of marital and family life. This article focuses on heterosexual relationships as a crucial and vital developmental task in young adulthood, presents their characteristics and dynamics of development, and in line with this notion, shows them as a possible criterion of individual development. This point of view can help us in assessing the degree to which individuals fulfill developmental tasks or deviate from the ideal course of life, and then in identifying the factors associated with these deviations. Therefore we can engage in psychocorrective activities in the area of close relationships and promote a successful fulfillment of developmental tasks by young adults.

Opis:
This article outlines and updates a formal, hierarchical theory of relational competence about socialization in intimate relationships, comprising: (1) three requirements: verifiability, applicability, and redundancy; (2) three meta-theoretical assumptions about the Width and Depth of relationships in Settings where relational competence is socialized; (3) three theoretical assumptions about abilities to love and to control through Presence Performance, and Production; (4) five models which include identity differentiation, styles, interactions, selfhood, and priorities; and (5) four applied models derived from meta-theoretical and theoretical assumptions: distance regulation,  pathogenic roles, intimacy, and negotiation. Empirical verification of these models has occurred through self-report paper-and-pencil instruments in the laboratory, through enrichment programs in primary prevention, targeted written practice exercises in secondary prevention, and prescribed tasks in tertiary prevention or psychotherapy.

Opis:
Contemporarily, the traditional model of marriage is no longer the only accepted form of family life; there are many alternatives to that type of relationship. In post-modernity we face a rapid change in the perception of informal relationships as well as their dynamic development and increase in number. However, will cohabitation - which in the times of moral relativism, praise of freedom and individuality and democratisation of all aspects of human life becomes increasingly popular – eventually dominate and replace traditional marriage?

Class legitimacy and individual choice : an ethnographic study of Indian urban middle-class intimate relationships
Autorzy:
Romanowicz, Anna
Opis:
This chapter explores the reproduction and legitimization of class inequalities through intimate relationships. In my ethnographic fieldwork among the Indian urban middle class, I have learned that the focus of scholars and my informants is on a variety of relationships: arranged and love marriages, love-cum-arranged marriages (and vice versa), informal relationships, to name a few. To classify a relationship as a particular type, the nature of the choice is often assessed. These distinctions could provide food for thought for an important (system) structure-(individual) agency debate. However, I would like to depart from this debate and ask, instead, why do middle-class members find it necessary to mark their choices as truly autonomous and individual? (cf. Romanowicz, forthcoming). Scholars have paid attention to the role of elites and grassroots in various forms of inequality (Pardo and Prato, Querying urban inequalities. In: P. Italo and G. B. Prato (eds.), Urban Inequalities: Ethnographically Informed Reflections. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2021) and legitimacy (Pardo and Prato, Legitimacy: Ethnographic and theoretical insights. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). This chapter supplements these studies with a middle-class perspective. Ultimately, I conclude that the emphasis on "individual choice" aids governance, despite jarring levels of inequalities being maintained and perpetuated.

Intimate relationships and resilience of people from divorced families compared to people growing up in complete families
Autorzy:
Tarka, Eliza
Opis:
The main aim of this study was to search for the differences in psychosocial functioning among young adults who experienced their parents` divorce and those who grew up in complete families. The analysis was conducted with the use of three research tools: my own demographic survey, the SPP-25 Resilience Measurement Scale by Ogińska-Bulik and Juczyński, and the Plopa and Kaźmierczak Partner Communication Questionnaire. The study was conducted on a group of 60 people (men and women) aged 20-36. The conducted research partially confirmed the methodological assumption concerning the reduced level of resilience among people who experienced their parents` divorce in comparison to persons who were brought up in full families. The hypothesis concerning the relationship between the level of resilience and the age of the respondents when their parents divorced was also partially confirmed. There was also a difference in the perception of the institution of marriage, which was assessed more negatively by people from divorced families. There were no statistically significant differences between the control group and the study group in terms of the quality of communication, satisfaction from an intimate relationship, tendency to formalize the relationship in the future, or the will to have children.
Głównym celem niniejszej pracy była próba zidentyfikowania różnic w zakresie funkcjonowania psychospołecznego pomiędzy młodymi dorosłymi, którzy doświadczyli rozwodu rodziców a tymi, którzy wychowywali się w rodzinach pełnych. Analiza została przeprowadzona z użyciem trzech narzędzi badawczych: ankiety demograficznej własnego autorstwa, Skali Pomiaru Prężności SPP-25 autorstwa Ogińskiej-Bulik i Juczyńskiego oraz Kwestionariusza Komunikacji Partnerskiej Plopy i Kaźmierczak. Badanie przeprowadzono na grupie 60 osób (kobiet i mężczyzn) w przedziale wiekowym 20-36 lat. Przeprowadzone badania częściowo potwierdziły założenie metodologiczne dotyczące obniżonego poziomu prężności psychicznej u osób, które doświadczyły rozwodu rodziców w porównaniu do jednostek dorastających w rodzinach pełnych. Nie wykazano istotnych statystycznie różnic pomiędzy grupą kontrolną a badaną w zakresie jakości komunikacji, satysfakcji z bliskiego związku, skłonności do sformalizowania związku w przyszłości ani chęci posiadania dzieci.
