Opis:
Mental meaning (mental contents) is not a particular kind of object, but it is the way a conscious human mind works. By `meaning' the author understands here both the extralinguistic meaning (perceptive, imaginary, etc.) and the so-called linguistic meaning. In both these senses meaning has the following properties: it is translinguistic, general, abstract, regularly interrelated, subject to modifications (extending, complementing and erasing its components), subject to schematization, it may be transferred to various physical foundations, it may be illustrated, it is directly accessible in introspection and accessible for many subjects (intersubjective). When approached negatively, meaning as a way of functioning of a conscious human mind cannot be identified with a physical sign (be it in the sense of specimen, or in the sense of type). It is neither an ideal object, nor a real one. Also, it is no kind of a perception stereotype. It is not an idea associated with a word, if idea is understood as either an image or a visual schema. Mental meaning is not a communication meaning, as the speaker may modify the meanings he found as existing ones, but he cannot create them. The author considers the following theories of meaning as insufficient: the theory, according to which meaning is an idea associated with the word and the theories saying that meaning may be identified with the conditions of truthfulness, the way phrases are used in colloquial language, or with communication meaning. Meaning is also not explained by such theories as semantics of conceptual roles, causal-historical theories, causal and teleological theories. Plato's theory saying that existence of mental meaning in the mind consists in exemplification in the mind of ideally existing properties is considered a correct one that explains mental meaning. The source of meaning in the mind is existence of ideal qualities outside the mind. A correct solution to the problem of the nature and origin of meaning may also be Aristotle's theory of obstraction, according to which the mind, beginning with individual objects and their properties, formulates meantal contents (meaning). Both these theories have to assume that the mind is also capable of performing the operation of transformation that converts properties existing (in a real or ideal way) outside the mind into a peculiarly mental mode of existence. In the case of Aristotle's theory this transformation consists in dematerialization, whereas in the case of Plato's theory transformation is tantamount to converting an ideal being into a mental existence. Additionally, the author suggests that in order to explain the intersubjective character of meaning one has to refer to a form of metaphysical harmonization of particular minds' action. From the semantic way of acting of the human mind one may also make inferences concerning its way of existence. Translinguisticallity, generality, abstraction and other features of human semantic consciousness allow the statement that functioning of human mind does not consist in purely material actions. This immaterial character, however, does not have to be understood as a thesis about the existence of some mysterious `spiritual material' of which human mind is made. It seems that immateriality has to be interpreted as radical extra-materiality.

Opis:
Environmental engineering is moving briskly and steadily from one challenging phase to another. The world of challenges are immense as well as far-reaching. Advanced oxidation processes today stands in the midst of immense scientific vision, scientific understanding and invincible scientific challenges. The effectivity of degradation quality of ozone and hydroxyl radicals is outstanding and path-breaking. Environmental concerns and subsequent environmental regulations are the burning issues of our present day civilization. Novel separation processes as well advanced oxidation techniques are the plausible solutions for zero-discharge norms and effective environmental engineering paradigm. The question of effective environmental engineering techniques comes into the horizon of a scientist’s mind. Amongst the advanced oxidation techniques, ozonation or ozone-oxidation stands today in the new millennium as the most effective environmental engineering techniques. Wastewater treatment and provision of clean drinking water are unquestionably the primordial issues of present day mankind and the ever-alert civil society. The visionary challenges are moving from one avenue of environmental disaster to another. Environmental disaster – both manmade as well as natural has plunged our civilization to unending catastrophe. These environmental calamities are harbingers of more immense and impending environmental disasters. The scientific paradigm and the scientific domain needs rethought and needs to be restructured. In the face of these immense environmental calamities, the thrust areas of novel separation processes and advanced oxidation needs immense retrospection. In such a critical juncture of history and time, this treatise effectively addresses the questions of zero-discharge norms with respect to new discoveries in the field of advanced oxidation processes particularly the field of ozonation.

Opis:
One of the most common visions in respect to introspection is represented by the so-called inner-sense (or inner-perception) model. But there are some good reasons to consider this model unsuitable. However, nowadays there are a few scholars (e.g. Armstrong) who defend it still. In this paper, I mention also other approaches to introspection (first of all, such as self-fulfillment, self-shaping, and self-expression approaches). But the primary goal of the paper is to defend a pluralist approach to introspection that allows us to examine introspection as involving many mental processes. In this model, a historical context and a phenomenological experience are engaged, too. It is not a quite new position. I discuss some (re)presentations of the pluralist approach. For instance, I reject Schwitzgebel’s solution as too radical and I support the direction proposed by Prinz.

Opis:
Kazimierz Twardowski attributed high cognitive value to introspection because he believed it plays a fundamental role in psychology, the primary philosophical discipline. He believed that basing philosophy on inner experience would allow it to obtain universal and justified results. Internal experience consists of perceiving one’s own mental facts; it is non-sensual and selfevident. Twardowski referred to introspection in his investigations in various ways, which is presented in the article.

Local introspection : several comments on the poetics of the genre

Opis:
The paper discusses some of the characteristics of the genre of poetic introspection (inward glance) connected with the home window as a myth-making locus. The window is the boundary that separates the inner, familiar domestic space from the more chaotic and unknown, and therefore potentially dangerous outer space. In literature, there are two main varieties of introspection: static introspection and, less frequently, dynamic one. Each makes possible the creation of different versions of poetic situation. Examples from the works of Mikhail Lermontov, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Abram Tertz and other authors are given as illustrations of these situations.

Opis:
People’s feelings of confidence in the correctness of their knowledge while answering a knowledge test can be inferred in two ways: either by averaging the values of specific confidence values assigned to each item in a test (local confidence) or by asking after the termination of the test for an evaluation of the number of correct answers regarding the entire test (global confidence). Surprisingly, when local and global confidence values of the same test are compared, global confidence tends to be significantly lower than local confidence (the confidence frequency effect). In the present study a heuristic process explanation for the effect is presented and its validity is empirically tested. The global confidence heuristic (GCH) process is based on the ability of participants to recall, after a test was completed, the frequencies of specific confidence values which were assigned to the test’s items. Participants build their global confidence by adding about half the number of their guessed answers, to the number of questions with sure answers. The proposed GCH process was supported quantitatively. A content analysis on retrospective explanations provided by participants indicated that this process was feasible. Further research is needed in order to fully explore the power of the explanation suggested here for the confidence-frequency effect.

Opis:
The article concerns cognition of natural law in the process of personalistic introspection and personalistic dialogue. The author points out that the negation of metaphysics that was established in modernity, achieving its zenith in the post-modern thought, leads as a result to alienation of a human being, not only in the sphere of his work, but in his whole spiritual sphere. In this context dialogical philosophy was only a partial answer to these problems, being born out of religious (Buber, Rosenzweig) or anti-totalitarian inspirations (Levinas). This philosophy is not based upon personalistic anthropology which would enable to go from being to obligation, i.e. from cognition of a human being to specifying his ethical vocation and his natural law aims. In the author’s opinion it was Karol Wojtyła in the middle of the 20th century who built the foundations of the new personalistic concept of ethics and natural law through a modern phenomenological and psychological approach of human experience. This concept was rooted in the classical tradition, but it exceeded this tradition at the same time. In the author’s opinion only the full approach of human experience which means spiritual, axiological, ethical and natural law experience through self cognition (personalistic introspection) and cognition of other people (personalistic dialogue) in all spheres of a person (intellectual – spiritual, somatic and emotional) gives a possibility for human cooperation in building a common good.
