The results of previous studies have shown high breeding values of Beskidian spruce. The aim of the study was to assess the genetic structure of seventeen Norway spruce provenances from the Beskidy Mts. tested in IPTNSIUFRO 1964/68 experiment in Krynica, which survived after massive wind damage on the plots. Polymorphism of five isozyme systems encoded in five loci was determined. The highest value of genetic diversity parameters: mean number of alleles per locus and observed heterozygosity was noted for progeny of spruce from the Eastern Beskidy Mts. (Na = 1.47, Ho = 0.15), and the lowest – for the provenance from the Western Beskidy Mts., Babia Góra massif and the Beskid Sądecki Mts. (Na = 1.27, Ho = 0.12). Mean genetic distance between analyzed spruce provenances was equal to 0.027.

Phospholipase C (PLC, EC 3.1.4.11) is an enzyme crucial for the phosphoinositol pathway and whose activity is involved in eukaryotic signal transduction as it generates two second messengers: diacylglycerol (DAG) and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3). There are four major types of phospholipase C named: β, γ, δ and the recently discovered ε, but this review will focus only on the recent advances for the γ isozymes of PLC. So far, four d isozymes (named γ1-4) have been discovered and examined. They differ with regard to cellular distribution, activities, biochemical features and involvement in human ailments.

Stagonospora nodorum produces cell wall degrading enzymes when grown in culture media containing cell wall components. The pathogen grew as well on minimal agar plates containing cellulose, xylan and pectin as glucose, except having sparser mycelia. Four cell wall-degrading enzymes, cellulase, xylanase, pectinase and b-1,3-glucanase were coordinately induced in culture filtrates growing on xyaln and cellulose as substrates. An aggressive isolate (sn26-1) secreted more cell wall-degrading enzymes than the others. Based on isoelectric focusing profiles, six to seven xylanase isozymes were induced by cellulose and xylan. No difference was found in the high (sn26-1) and low (9074) aggressive isolates. Addition of cell wall-degrading enzyme mixtures, not high xylanase alone, to a spore suspension of a low aggressive isolate (9074) caused a limited increase in tissue necrosis. We conclude that the cell wall degrading enzymes play a role in early penetration of the host by the fungus, but they are not important elicitors for disease development.

Two contrasting hypotheses on the relationship between dental character variability and biochemical-genetic diversity: (1) "influence of developmental homeostasis" and (2) "genetic-phenetic variation correlation" were tested in brown hare Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778 populations. Interindividual variability (IV) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of 12 non-metrical characters of third lower premolars (P3) as well as allozymic heterozygosity (H) at 13 polymorphic loci was examined in 385 individuals from 19 geographical sampling units (GSU) in Austria.Juveniles and adults were discriminated according to dry eye lens weights. Sex was determined from internal reproductive organs.

Opis:
Genetic differentiation of nine Polish Norway spruce populations, expressed by their isozymatic polymorphism, is presented. The results suggest a presence of two gene pools, one in north−eastern, another in southern Poland.
