Opis:
Objective: One of the practical models for assessment of stressful working conditions due to job strain is "job demand and control" or Karasek's job strain model. This model explains how adverse physical and psychological effects including cardiovascular disease risk factors can be established due to high work demand. The aim was to investigate how certain cardiovascular risk factors including body mass index (BMI), heart rate, blood pressure, serum total cholesterol levels, and cigarette smoking are associated with job demand and control in workers. Materials and Methods: In this cohort study, 500 subjects completed "job demand and control" questionnaires. Factor analysis method was used in order to specify the most important "job demand and control" questions. Health check-up records of the workers were applied to extract data about cardiovascular disease risk factors. Ultimately, hypothesis testing, based on Eta, was used to assess the relationship between separated working groups and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension and serum total cholesterol level). Results: A significant relationship was found between the job demand-control model and cardiovascular risk factors. In terms of chisquared test results, the highest value was assessed for heart rate (Chi² = 145.078). The corresponding results for smoking and BMI were Chi² = 85.652 and Chi² = 30.941, respectively. Subsequently, Eta result for total cholesterol was 0.469, followed by hypertension equaling 0.684. Moreover, there was a significant difference between cardiovascular risk factors and job demand-control profiles among different working groups including the operational group, repairing group and servicing group. Conclusion: Job control and demand are significantly related to heart disease risk factors including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cigarette smoking.

Opis:
In this paper, the problem of entering the labour market by young people, in particular graduates, will be discussed. Obstacles and problems relating to the transition from education to career will be presented. Using the Central Statistical Office (GUS) data concerning Poland, the Silesian Voivodeship and the city of Bielsko-Biała, an attempt will be made to give an insight into the notion of unemployment itself. The author has also explored the concept of unemployment, which is presented on the basis of the data obtained from the Central Statistical Office on Polish, Silesian province and the city of Bielsko-Biała. The main objective of this work is to present the concept and the level of unemployment in the city of Bielsko-Biała by comparing the situation in the Silesian Voivodeship with the whole country. Apart from that, the feasible assistance of state-run institutions, including job centres, will be showed as well as the present legal aspects of the problem. The methods used in this paper include statistical devices pertaining to the unemployment in Poland. The theory being substantiated is that those poorly educated are the high-risk group in the context of becoming unemployed.

How to survive in academia : demands, resources and study satisfaction among Polish PhD students

Opis:
There is a great deal of research showing that PhD students suffer from dissatisfaction. Whereas most studies in this field strived to identify factors negatively related to PhD students’ well-being, still little is known about factors positively related to the well-being of young academics. We based our analysis on the Job Demands-Resource Theory (JD-R), to identify study resources positively related to PhD student satisfaction. Building on the results of the survey conducted among 360 PhD students of the Jagiellonian University (Poland) we singled out seven main resources most strongly related to PhD student satisfaction. Our findings might provide initial evidence about what type of resources are worth developing to maximize PhD student well-being. These results could be of particular importance and interest for candidates who look for PhD positions and PhD students already working in different academic environments, as well as for broader academic community and higher education policymakers.

Opis:
In many enterprises the re-designed work organization is common in use. Job enlargement, job rotation and job enrichment are examples of non-financial ways of motivating people towards better performance. Motivating is here based on modifying or changing the content of the job in order to give employees more satisfaction with their work. Particularly, job enrichment increases the depth of a job and al-lows job-holders to have more autonomy and more control over their work. In consequence, it gives workers the opportunity to satisfy some of the higher needs as identified by Maslow’s and Herzberg’s theories. Re-designed jobs need higher competencies that is why employees with additional tasks and functions expect higher level of salary. It is important from the viewpoint of maintaining the proper and close relationship between payment and job’s requirements. Impact of changes in job con-tent on job’s position in job grade structure resulting from job evaluation, and subsequently, on payment level is presented in this paper.
Zatem należy stwierdzić, iż racjonalne i obiektywne różnicowanie stawek płac to podstawa budowy systemów motywacyjnych, gdyż bez właściwie zaprojektowanego systemu różnicowania wynagrodzeń inne formy motywowania pozafinansowego mogą nie spełnić swojej roli, gdyż wciąż będzie istniało niezadowolenie pracowników.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of the study was to investigate the direct and indirect – mediated by job burnout – effects of job demands on mental and physical health problems. The Job Demands–Resources model was the theoretical framework of the study. Three job demands were taken into account – interpersonal conflicts at work, organizational constraints and workload. Indicators of mental and physical health problems included depression and physical symptoms, respectively. Material and Methods Three hundred and sixteen Polish teachers from 8 schools participated in the study. The hypotheses were tested with the use of tools measuring job demands (Interpersonal Conflicts at Work, Organizational Constraints, Quantitative Workload), job burnout (the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory), depression (the Beck Hopelessness Scale), and physical symptoms (the Physical Symptoms Inventory). The regression analysis with bootstrapping, using the PROCESS macros of Hayes was applied. Results The results support the hypotheses partially. The indirect effect and to some extent the direct effect of job demands turned out to be statistically important. The negative impact of 3 job demands on mental (hypothesis 1 – H1) and physical (hypothesis 2 – H2) health were mediated by the increasing job burnout. Only organizational constraints were directly associated with mental (and not physical) health. Conclusions The results partially support the notion of the Job Demands-Resources model and provide further insight into processes leading to the low well-being of teachers in the workplace.

Opis:
Objectives: This paper aims to assess the relationship between the determinants of the psychosocial work environment, as expressed in terms of JDC or ERI models, and all-cause mortality in older individuals. Materials and Methods: The baseline study was conducted on a cohort comprising a random sample of 65-year-old community-dwelling citizens of Kraków, Poland. All of the 727 participants (410 women, 317 men) were interviewed in their households in the period between 2001 and 2003; a structured questionnaire was used regarding their occupational activity history, which included indexes measuring particular dimensions of their psychosocial work environment based on Karasek's Job Demand-Control model and Siegrist's Effort-Reward Imbalance model, as well as health-related quality of life and demographic data. Mortality was ascertained by monitoring City Vital Records for 7 years. Analyses were conducted separately for men and women, with the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model. Results: During a 7-year follow-up period, 59 participants (8.1%) died, including 21 women (5.1% of total women) and 38 men (12%) (p < 0.05). Significant differences in the number of deaths occurred regarding disproportion between physical demands and control in men: those with low physical demands and low control died three times more often than those with high control, regardless of the level of demands. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model showed that significantly higher risk of death was observed only in men with low physical demands and low control, compared to those with low physical demands and high control (Exp(B) = 4.65, 95% CI: 1.64-13.2). Conclusions: Observed differences in mortality patterns are similar to the patterns of relationships observed in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) level at the beginning of old age; however, the relationship between efforts and rewards or demands and control and mortality was not fully confirmed.

Opis:
The article updates and broadens the existing body of knowledge on the creation and loss of jobs in Polish enterprises in 1996-2004. The author uses measures proposed by Davis (et al.) and a collection of data on the financial reporting of enterprises in the non-financial sector. He also calculates job creation and loss ratios. The study shows that average ratios for job creation and loss in the analyzed period ran at a relatively high level of 10.4 and 12.6 percent respectively. This indirectly shows that that the Polish labor market is relatively flexible and potential barriers only marginally apply to the creation and loss of jobs in enterprises. Moreover, the analysis shows that job flows are strictly related to economic growth. The research indicates that processes involving the creation and loss of jobs are characterized by considerable permanence. More than 80 percent of the jobs lost this year will not be recreated next year. On the other hand, in the case of job creation, only half the newly created jobs will be maintained next year.

Opis:
The Job Demands-Resources Theory (JD-R) is a heuristic theory that explains the work engagement and exhaustion by job resources and job demands interaction. The purpose of this article is to use the JD-R as a theoretical framework of work engagement management concept. In the first part of the article the concept of work engagement is presented. The second section explains the theoretical assumption of JD-R. In the third part, the concept of work engagement management is introduced. Work engagement management concept integrates planning, measurement and active modification of job resources and demands, which should lead to the development of work engagement among employees. The conclusion sets out the possible consequences of theoretical and practical application of the proposed concept and points up its limitations.
