Opis:
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in composite materials reinforced with natural fibers. Due to the easy and cheap methods of obtaining raw materials, the possibility of recycling, biodegradability, production and processing safe for health, such materials can be a good alternative to composite materials reinforced with glass or carbon fibers. However, due to the lower mechanical properties of natural composites, their use as construction materials is still limited. Nevertheless, natural fiber composites have characteristics that can be used in structural applications as long as the mechanical behavior is well understood, reliable and predictable. The paper presents the results of numerical calculations of the compression process of a composite reinforced with a fabric made of flax and jute fibers (trade names: Biotex Flax 400g/cm2 and Biotex Jute 400 g/cm2) on a basis of Kinetix R240 epoxy resin. The data necessary for the numerical analysis were calculated in the Digimat software using the Double Inclusion micromechanical model, while the simulations of compression of the details were carried out in the Ansys software. Sections with different number of layers were tested. The results were compared with the experiment. Buckling forces obtained in the numerical analysis are nearby experimental results. Two types of C – section buckling modes were obtained and they consisted of two or three half-waves of buckling.

Opis:
Objectives Prior studies have been performed on cotton textile plants throughout the world. This study was planned to identify the rate of byssinosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in hemp and jute workers and those who worked with both of them. Material and Methods The study was realized in a factory which consecutively processed hemp and jute. The study enrollment included 266 people, 164 of whom were active workers and 102 were retired. A questionnaire, plain chest X-rays, physical examination and pulmonary function tests were performed. Dust levels were measured in various sections of the factory during 8 h work shifts. Endotoxin levels of various quality hemp fibers and dusts were measured. Results The rate of byssinosis (28.2%) was higher among the workers that who exposed to both jute and hemp dust. The frequency of chronic bronchitis in retired workers who previously smoked was higher (20%) as compared to currently smoking workers (17%). High dust levels were measured in some parts of the factory (mean (M) = 2.69 mg/m³). Working in dense dust areas, active smoking, being older than 40 years of age, being an ex-smoker, and working in the factory for a period exceeding 15 years were significantly associated with bronchitis and emphysema development. High endotoxin levels were determined for fine hemp dust (605 EU/mg), coarse hemp dust (336 EU/mg) and poor quality hemp fibers (114 EU/mg), whereas in fresh hemp stalks the level of endotoxin was determined to be lower (0.27 EU/mg). Conclusions Because of high exposures to jute and hemp dusts that are associated with high byssinosis rates, personal protection and environmental hygiene is crucial to prevention of byssinosis.

Opis:
Flame retardant and antimicrobial functionalities were imparted in jute textile using sodium metasilicate nonahydrate (SMSN), commonly known as “water glass”. Sodium metasilicate nonahydrate (SMSN) was applied in jute fabric in different concentration by padding method followed by drying. Flame retardancy of the fabric was evaluated by Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) and burning behaviour under vertical flammability tester including the char length. Burning rate was found to decrease by almost 10 times after an application of 2% SMSN compared to the control sample. Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of both the control and treated jute fabrics were utilized to understand the mechanism of developed flame retardance in jute fabric. It was observed that the SMSN treated samples showed excellent antimicrobial property against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Antimicrobial properties of both the control and treated jute fabrics were also measured quantitatively.

Opis:
Phytoplankton acts as a primary producer and biological filter of aquatic ecosystem. Jute retting during monsoon is a common anthropological activity in the rural Bengal. Quantitative seasonal bio-monitoring of phytoplankton community composition with relative abundance and its diversity indices was carried out in this study from April 2013 to March 2014 to assess water quality and the impact of jute retting on phytoplankton diversity of a tropical fresh water oxbow lake in Nadia district of India. We recorded a total of 34 genera of 5 distinct classes, Chlorophyceae (15), Bacillariophyceae (13), Cyanophyceae (4), Dinophyceae (1) and Euglenophyceae (1). Members of Chlorophyceae dominated throughout the year. Unlike Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae was found to be significantly increased during monsoon when compared to the rest of the year. Average phytoplankton density was highest in post-monsoon (8760/L) followed by monsoon (4680/L) and pre-monsoon (3650/L). Owing to the dominance of class Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae we found this lake to be oligotrophic to mesotrophic. Indices values of genera richness, Shannon-Wiener, evenness and Simpson’s diversity reached their lowest 14, 1.61, 0.61 and 0.68 in monsoon and highest 23, 2.42, 0.77 and 0.86 in post monsoon respectively. The lowest diversity values during monsoon clearly suggested that the selected lake has highest anthropogenic pollution due to jute retting which impacted significantly on phytoplankton diversity. Therefore, the lake is not conducive for fish growth especially during monsoon and we opine that there is a need to regulate jute retting process, intensity and its density in the lake during the monsoon to ensure enhanced biodiversity for sustainable management and conservation of aquatic environment of this Oxbow lake.

Opis:
The paper presents experimental studies of bending heterogeneous pine beams reinforced with jute fabrics. Pinus Sylvestris L, a Scandinavian wood species, was used in this study, originating from discard, subjected to 5-year atmospheric influences and biological degradation. The use of recoil wood is an excellent choice, forced by the increasing shortage of high-quality assortments and the need for economical management of scarce raw material. The article presents experimental results regarding the effectiveness of pre-stressed jute reinforcements in the tension zone of pine wood. The effects of using jute fabrics in beams were analysed, and the results were compared to beams without reinforcement. Additionally, the aim of the research is to investigate the influence of jute fabrics on the ductility of wooden beams. Research has been conducted on these polymer composites reinforced with natural fibres due to environmental awareness, their many advantages and, above all, the fact that they are sustainable materials. The conducted tests revealed that the jute fibres had a positive impact when applied to wooden beams and the load-bearing capacity increased by 24% and stiffness 24% compared to unreinforced beams. Moreover, the tests confirmed enhanced strength (24%) of reinforced pine beams in relation to the reference beams. In contrast, the ductility increased from 6.6% for reference beams to 75.7% for reinforced pine wood. Reinforcements with jute fibres have considerable ductility, which indicates that jute fibres are an excellent material for reinforcing the structure.

Opis:
Background: Jute industry workers constantly exposed themselves to jute dust and are at risk of impairment of lung function. Investigation on various studies revealed the effects of exposure to jute dust but limited studies so far undertaken regarding its bearing on pulmonary function of jute workers of West Bengal,India. Purpose: To evaluate the respiratory status of jute mill workers of West Bengal exposed to occupational hazards. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 203 male jute mill workers of age range 18 – 60 yrs. from West Bengal and a control group of 141 men of similar age .Dynamic pulmonary function parameters were carried out including physical parameters, respiratory abnormalities, year of exposure and smoking history. Results: FVC, FEV1, FEF 200-1200 and PEFR values of higher age group non smoker of low dust zone were significantly higher in comparison to the non smoker of high dust zone. The prevalence of chest tightness was 33.49% and liver dysfunction was 41.9% in dusty zone workers of jute mill in comparison to less dusty zone. Again, incidence of chest tightness and cough was highest (35.44%) in higher age group workers and prevalence of byssinosis like symptoms and chronic bronchitis was 30- 37% after 10 – 30years of exposure. But occurrence of bronchial asthma was 11.9% in workers of greater than 20 years of exposure. Prevalence of all the above respiratory abnormalities was higher among smokers than non-smokers. Conclusions: Concentration of jute dust exposure had been associated with decrease in FVC, FEV1, and PEFR with a higher risk of developing chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, byssinosis and other respiratory symptoms. This indicated high occupational health hazards which would create an alarming situation, if remained unchecked.

Opis:
Tensile properties are studied to assess the influence of fiber weight. Room temperature cured epoxy was impregnated with jute/Sc in order to evaluate the performance of hybrid composites. Jute/Sc fibers are taken in the 1:1 weight ratios to suspend on epoxy resin with different fiber lengths such as 1, 2, 3 and 4 cm. The variations of aforementioned properties on hybrid composites with different fiber lengths have been studied. Significant improvement in tensile strengths of the jute/Sc hybrid composites has been observed by the alkali treatments. Thermal properties such as TGA and DSC are studied to investigate the influence of change in fibre length on treated and untreated hybrid composites in which 4 °C rise in decomposition temperature, 3 °C rise for glass transition temperature respectively.

Opis:
Roadside transitory water bodies being manmade depressions have a great ecological and socio-economic importance from years. The effects of agricultural runoffs, jute retting, macro-phytes infestations and inadequate rainfall in changed climate often degrade transitory water bodies’ environment while the biodiversity have impacted severely because of population pressure, over exploitation and indiscriminate use of fine meshed fishing gears as a whole. Physico-chemical and biological analysis with fish species composition, relative abundance, diversity indices like species richness, evenness and Shannon-Wiener index were carried out for pre-, during and post-jute retting season and for year mean as a whole to assess impact of jute retting on the roadside transitory water body’s environmental health and indigenous fish diversity at Sahebnagar village in Nadia District, India. All the physico-chemical parameters barring biochemical oxygen demand and water transparency remained more or less same or marginally got little changed during those three seasons. As much as 19 native fish species with varied relative abundances and dominances were identified. Jute retting impacted lower native fish diversity indices like Shannon-Wiener index values (1.94 to 2.68) clearly indicated poor to moderate pollution status of the transitory water body in that area during monsoon in particular and throughout the year in general. So we opined there should be some control over the intense jute retting in the road side transitory water bodies for sustainable management of these manmade resources.

Opis:
The physical especially bending properties of jute fibres treated with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) were studied in this work. To the knowledge of these authors, the influence of DMSO treatment on the prickle properties of jute fibres has not been investigated earlier. The results of the investigation indicate that 8 hours of DMSO treatment at 80 °C leads to a decrease in the equivalent bending modulus of up to 38.3%. This decrease was due to the swelling of fibrils and the removal of non-cellulosic materials. It is significant to improve the wear behaviour of jute fabrics. Suitable chemical treatment not only slenderised the jute fibres, but also removed the wax dramatically.

Opis:
In the last decade, the exploration and investigation of natural ingredients as alternative materials for metal substitutes have been continuously conducted to produce eco-friendly products with sufficiently good strength. The climate and geography of countries like Indonesia provide that such materials are available abundantly and can be easily replanted. Thus, these materials have considerable potential for application in various products. The purpose of this study is to analyze the compressive and tensile strength of a cylindrical column concrete structure reinforced externally with laminate composite materials derived from jute fabric sheets. The specimen manufacturing method uses a vacuum bagging technique with the specimen size specified in the ASTM C39 test standard. After manufacturing, the specimens underwent the treatment of immersion in clean water for 28 days, followed by drying at room temperature for additional 28 days. The column concrete specimens were wrapped with laminate composite materials with variations in several layers of jute fabric. Compressive strength and splitting tensile tests were conducted according to ASTM C39 and ASTM C496 test standards, respectively. The test results showed that applying laminate composite sheaths on the outer surface of the column concrete structure resulted in an increase in strength of up to 100% for both compressive strength and splitting tensile strength. The magnitude of such an increase in strength is reported in this article.
