Opis:
The purpose of this work is to study the development and regularity of morphological structures associated with thermokarst processes. An attempt is made to solve two problems, by analyzing the spatial regularity of morphological structures associated with thermokarst, and that of their dynamics. We use the method of landscape mathematical morphology - a branch of landscape science, investigating quantitative laws of landscape mosaics using methods of mathematical analysis of these mosaics. Investigation was carried out for five parcels in Siberia and Alaska. The analysis shows that a number of deductions from the proposed mathematical model for thermokarst lake plains are generally corroborated by empirical data.

Opis:
This study aims to investigate the dynamic pattern of landscape ecological units (LEUs) and analyse spatial variations of the ecological risk in Parangtritis coastal dune, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A quantitative method was used in this research as part of landscape ecological analysis using a geographic information system. LEUs were interpreted by small format aerial photographs (SFAPs) and verified through field survey, then were calculated using the formula within grids to produce the ecological risk index (ERI) in the total area. According to the sub-class and class scenario, many LEUs showed changes in their landscape pattern. The ERI in the study area consisted of five levels (very low to very high), each of which was spatially varied. The ecological risk formed clusters coinciding with certain LEUs where fragility chiefly contributed to the sub-class scenario, while disturbance contributed to the class scenario.

Opis:
The land use/land cover pattern of landscapes as the main element of the landscape structure has an important role in landscape management, nature conservation, and preservation, considering its ability to provide valuable information about the spatial distribution and changes in land cover that occur on the Earth's surface. On the other hand, human activities have caused significant impacts on ecosystems, resulting in a loss of biodiversity, increased risks of erosion and soil degradation, and wildfires. In the last few decades, the growing trend of occurrence of negative effects on land use/land cover has not contributed to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs), considering that the relationship between humankind and the environment is an extremely fragile equilibrium. In recent decades, large-scale land use and land cover (LULC) patterns have shown stability, but there have been significant dynamics observed specifically in forest areas and agricultural land. Among these changes, the conversion of maritime pine to eucalyptus stands out as the most relevant transition in terms of forest and agroforestry use classes. This conversion is a result of economic incentives available, which have contributed to the gain in forested areas. This study intends to verify how the alteration of the landscape configuration, represented by different metrics of configuration and diversity, is related to the intensity of human disturbance. The objectives of the study are: (1) to quantify the change in land use/land cover (LULC) patterns and the degree of human disturbance in Mainland Portugal between 1990 and 2018, and (2) to study the relationship between LULC configuration and the impact resulting from human disturbance under different levels of intensity, to understand how changing trends in landscape pattern can serve as indicators to estimate landscape changes resulting from human actions. The Hemeroby index (HI) was calculated to quantify the impacts on ecosystems resulting from disturbance caused by human actions. Based on the Hemeroby index value analysis for the period between 1990 and 2018, the level of naturalness increased in 58% of the country, mainly in the south and east of Portugal. The landscape pattern was quantified using a set of metrics, namely Mean Patch Size (MPS), Mean Shape Index (MSI), Total Edge (TE), Mean Patch Fractal Dimension (MPFD), and Mean Perimeter-Area Ratio (MPAR). To identify the existing statistical correlations between the geometric parameters of the landscape and the HIs values, the Spearman method was used. At the landscape level, the metrics TE and MSI have a strong negative correlation with HI. This suggests that landscapes with greater structural complexity are good indicators of low levels of hemeroby. At the class level, edge density (ED) and mean patch size (MPS) showed a significant correlation with the Hemeroby index for seminatural areas (all metrics), artificial surfaces and forests (TE, MSI, and MPS), agricultural areas (TE, MPS, and MPFD), and Bare Ground (TE, MSI, and MPFD).

The objective of the study was to identify components of the landscape of a selected lakeland catchment basin (river Jorka catchment, Masurian Lakeland, Poland), to assess their size and distribution with respect to their cover and use, and to evaluate their role as barriers to nutrient inflow into lakes. Aerial photographs (1:10 000) were applied to identifY the use and cover of catchment. Vertical black and white photographs were recorded on negative infrared in 1997 and 1998. The air photos and topographical maps (1:10 000, 1:25 000) were used to identifY objects (landscape patches) that differed with respect to their function as barriers to nutrients. Each landscape patch was allocated to one of the eight categories of land cover and use: crop fields, forests (forests on mineral soils, oak-hornbeam forests, mixed coniferous forests), meadows and pastures, wasteland (permanently or temporarily excluded from agricultural use), lakes, wet forests (forests on hydrogenic soils, alder swamps, riparian carrs, and shrubberies), other wetlands (open wetlands, mid-field bodies of water), and built-up land. The identified objects were assigned to three categories with respect to their function as barriers: highly effective barriers (forested and non-forest wetlands, and lakes - 6% of Jorka river catchment); moderate effective barriers (forest, meadows and pastures, wasteland - 42%); and with no barrier function (arable land, built-up land - residential and industrial, tourist objects, etc. - 52%).

Opis:
This letter is a response by Dominika Macocha to the discussion between Elżbieta Janicka, Konrad Matyjaszek, Xawery Stańczyk, Katrin Stoll and Anna Zawadzka about her video-sculptural installation work “50°31’29.7”N 22°46’39.1”E, 50°30’56.2”N 22°46’01.0”E, 50°30’41.0”N 22°45’49.5”E” published in Studia Litteraria et Historica 9 (2020). The discussion has enabled the artist to look at her work from a new perspective, to reflect on it in a critical way and to clarify central issues raised by the discussants. The letter is a testimony to the artist’s engagement with the local community which until today lives in the shadow of those Poles who, on their own initiative, murdered Jews during the Shoah. Macocha reveals the current efforts undertaken by several actors, among them the community of Bilgoraj, to cover up the historical fact of the murder of Jews carried out by members of the local population. The letter closes with a reflection on the responsibility of the artist in view of the fact that a revolution of the symbolic system has not yet occurred.
