Opis:
The aim of this paper is to characterize the relation between the urban  landscape (the image of the city) and the subject. The landscape is understood here in two ways: as something alien, excluding, and hostile, but also as something that gains new features when in contact with the Other. For it can be said, paraphrasing Siegfried Lenz’s famous statement on the relation between man and landscape, that the city is being created through us. The relationship between the residents and the urban landscape has a reciprocal character, in which “I” places itself in relation to a certain “you.”

Opis:
The landscape is a source of a great number of information, connected not only with form but also with substance and function. Its influence on our intellect, associations and emotional feeling depends of innate features, conditions of upbringing, kind of education, experiences, system of values and so cold social consciousness. The landscape is a common welfare and for these reason ought to satisfy everyone or, at least, the most people. So the certain frames for social participation must be created within landscape investigation and within decision concerning landscape. The most important thing is to realize, what is the relation of community to the tradition, to cultural and natural heritage, to local character of landscape, to separateness, what is its relation to symbols existing in the landscape, to unusual things, interesting people or essential events connected with particular place. It is important, because all this contributes to building of man’s identity. The author has focused her attention on modification of landscape study in such a way that, above mentioned, information based on public opinion polls, could be included and used. The method presented in this article comprises new aspects concerning perception, among them the notion of landscape model, which means, created in human consciousness, the image of landscape consisted of physiognomic features of a particular ground, which determine its essence. Such a model presented in graphic shape, can be used not only as a readable landscape record, but also as a useful tool in collaboration with local community. Another new element of method consists in separate treatment of the substance contained in a cultural landscape – the substance understood as its sense, meaning, significance. The idea understood in this way is generally associated with the original, the distinct or the unique of the phenomena realized by man; it is undoubtedly associated with all that affects his intellect and emotions particularly strongly. Various kind of substance are registered on a separate plan so‐called “the map of meanings”, which is the result of collaboration between architects and local community. The whole study has a classic construction, it means, besides mentioned above, registration of landscape resources, comprises their evaluation and indications for landscape’s preservation and shaping. In each of these parts, participation of community is provided. In the case of discrepancy of opinion between architects and community, the necessity of further dialogue is signaled.

The basic results and conclusions of multi-year studies (described in detail in previous papers) on the river-lake system in the lakeland region of north-eastern Poland are shortly presented in relation to the selected general ecological problems. The study area was proved to be representative of the mosaic landscape structure and of the river-lake system as a trophic continuum with the spatial pattern of human impact established a century ago. Generally low export rates of nutrients and relatively low input to the lakes were found as typical of the region. However, year-to-year variation in nutrient export from the lake watersheds was high, mostly related to the discharge variation, and highest in the vernal period; the highest values were found for polluted fragments of the watershed. The long-term relative stability of in-lake trophic conditions was found and their basic relation to the lake position in the river system. The role of wetlands (isolated patches and the zones close to lakes) in diminishing the nutrient input was proved and their vegetation was described. Some consequences of the possible global warming and decrease in discharge and water table in the region were pointed out, such as the pulsing (concentrated in the freshet period) system of water and nutrient supplying, sink or source function of lakes in the river system (positive or negative nutrient retention in successive lakes), change in eutrophication rate, and its symptoms. The main implications for watershed management in the lakeland region are indicated.

Opis:
Multidisciplinary landscape studies create a unique opportunity to trace cultural and environmental transformations and move us closer to understanding the distance that humanity have covered for the hundreds thousands years of its development. This is because the cultural “multi-layer structure” is an inherent feature of landscape, making it a kind of a palimpsest. During last years analysis dealing with many aspects of the landscape and its research perspectives are becoming more and more popular, we would like r to initiate an interdisciplinary project which will bring together efforts of experts and knowledge of various disciplines, and will allow us to integrate and share results of their analysis on the role of landscape in human life as well as will develop methods of its research and protection.

Opis:
The concepts and assumptions related to the landscape ecology, functioning of catchment basins, and eutrophication of lakes adopted in the presented studies are discussed. These studies concern: lake as a landscape component, importance of the patch pattern in the catchment, processes related to nutrient export, transformations and retention in lakes, specific problems of lake chains (river-lake systems), wetlands as lake-land ecotones responsible for nutrient removal, and other problems. Specific questions for the present studies (like long-term changes) and the study goals were indicated. General characteristics of the river-lake system under study (river Jorka on the Masurian Lakeland, north-eastern Poland), climatic conditions in the study periods, and the scope of the studies are shortly presented with reference to the particular papers in the volume.

Opis:
Krajobraz konfliktu to koncepcja przykuwająca obecnie uwagę w studiach krajobrazowych. Kierunkuje analizy przede wszystkim w ramach archeologii współczesności, stanowiąc jeden z kluczy odczytywania historii ze struktur otaczającego nas krajobrazu kulturowego. W artykule przedstawiono propozycję rozszerzenia koncepcji krajobrazu konfliktu w dyskursie o żydowskim materialnym dziedzictwie religijnym. W pracy omówiono wyniki analiz dotyczących wybranych elementów krajobrazu konfliktu stanowiących składowe m.in. substancji nagrobkowej nekropolii. W badaniach wykorzystano metodykę nieinwazyjnej dokumentacji terenowej oraz wykonano analizę komparatystyczną danych fotogrametrycznych i teledetekcyjnych (m.in. chmury punktów z lotniczego skaningu laserowego, zdjęć lotniczych). Na tej podstawie skonstruowano przestrzenne modele zinwentaryzowanych struktur dziedzictwa materialnego, stanowiących historyczne palimpsesty, i wyodrębniono elementy krajobrazu konfliktu.
The landscape of conflict is a conception which has recently attracted a lot of attention in landscape studies. It chiefly inspires studies that represent the field of the archeology of the present, thus constituting one of the keys to reading? history from the structures of the surrounding cultural landscape. This article proposes to extend the conception of the landscape of conflict into the discourse about Jewish material religious heritage. Attention paid by the humanist to materiality reveals new contexts of the Holocaust, including its non-human, landscape representations. Here, an adaptation of the conception in the studies of Jewish religious heritage has been carried out on the example of research conducted in the vicinity of the New Jewish Cemetery in Łódź. This article presents the results of studies of chosen elements of this landscape of conflict, elements which, along with other functions, constitute the physical fact of the gravestones of the necropolis. The research drawn upon was gathered using the methods of non-invasive field documentation; the analysis involves the comparisons of photogrammetric and teledetection data, including point clouds obtained by laser scanning and aerial photographs. These were the basis for the spatial models of the structures of material heritage under consideration, which constitute historical palimpsests, and for the identification of the elements of this landscape of conflict.

Opis:
Landscape perception is a complex process, conditioned by a number of external factors related to perceived characteristics of landspace and resulting from personality traits and psychosocial level of development of the recipient. Important elements which condition the overall perception of the landscape are significant places – places of symbolic, magical, leisure qualities. Selection, type and characteristics of these places will depend on individual preferences of the recipient of the landscape. The studies carried out among young people from Bieszczady indicate significant subjective choice of places, often a given image differs from the usual stereotypes. Regularity as well as aberrances in the perception and evaluation of sites described in this paper was observed.

Opis:
Transcarpathia (Zakarpattia) is one of the most interesting regions of Ukraine. It was part of at least six different states only in the twentieth century, and thus language priorities were subject to frequent changes. As a result, there are inscriptions in Ukrainian, Russian, Hungarian, English, Romanian, Czech and many other languages there today. This makes the linguistic landscape of Transcarpathia worth analysing. The concept of “linguistic landscape” is no longer new for Ukraine and for Transcarpathia in particular, which allows us to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of previous works on the topic. The article is illustrated with photographs taken by the author in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine.
Zakarpacie to jeden z najbardziej interesujących regionów Ukrainy.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare different habitat types according to species richness and estimate their value for total species richness at a landscape level. The study was carried out in the years 1995–2001 in the Tarnów region (1400 km2, S Poland). All bird species were classified according to broadly defined breeding habitat type. Four main, easily distinguishable habitat types were specified: forests (18% of the area), open areas (70%), wetlands (1%) and anthropogenic areas (11%). Birds were classified as habitat specialists if they bred in only one habitat type, or as habitat generalists, if they bred in two or more habitat types. Altogether, 151 species nested in the study area, and a total of 87 species were habitat specialists. There were statistically more endangered species (so called “losers”) among the habitat specialists than in the habitat generalists' group. Habitat specialists were also statistically less abundant than habitat generalists. The following numbers of species were recorded in the specific habitats: forests — 70, open areas — 75, wetlands — 61, anthropogenic areas — 46. Among these, the percentages of habitat specialists were the following: forests — 41.4%, open areas — 18.7%, wetlands — 52.5%, anthropogenic areas — 26.1%. It was found that the numbers of species inhabiting the various habitat types differed from the number to be expected on the basis of their area. This was especially apparent in the case of wetlands, which constituted only a small part of the total area, but as many as 32 species (21.1% of all) occurred only there. For conservation purposes, wetlands appear to play the most important role in shaping species richness in the landscape studied here. However, each habitat type contained some species that were not noted in other habitats.
