Opis:: This article aims to map current state policy and governmental responses to migrant integration in Poland, as well as to identify pressing needs and key challenges in this area, with a particular focus on language and education. It draws on a literature review and analysis of legal documents and reports on migrant integration and language policy for 1989–2020. When analysing the data, particular attention was paid to the declared state policy on migrant integration and its actual implementation, as captured in the Supreme Audit Office (NIK 2015, 2020) and Migrant Integration Policy Index reports (MIPEX 2015, 2020). The research shows that the scope of integration activities and their effects have been unsatisfactory to date. The situation of migrants in Poland was dubbed “equality on paper” in the MIPEX 2020 report. Current programmes and activities are not fostering full integration of migrants. Apart from housing and employment issues, a lack of language skills and education that is not responsive to the needs of migrants remain the main barriers to migrant integration in Poland.

Opis:: The author of the paper shows how one may reflect on the essence of human rights, through the lens of reporters’ stories, including in particular Ben Rawlence’s book City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp. The paper encourages one to listen to the voice of refugees and to develop an in-terest in their lives in order to understand how they define their rights, what they derive them from, and how they judge their observance by the interna-tional community. In fact, these deliberations are connected with a problem which is important for contemporary education, namely how to shape a genu-inely humanistic attitude among young Poles towards people from different cultures, who are additionally forced to leave their homes.

Opis:: Kwestia językowa to zjawiska wynikające z kontaktu dwu lub więcej języków na tym samym terytorium lub w tej samej społeczności. Przejawem kwestii językowej jest koegzystencja i/lub konflikty na tle językowym oraz polityka językowa państw, władz regionalnych i ruchów społecznych zmierzająca do utrwalenia lub zmiany sytuacji językowej. Najważniejsze zagadnienia związane z kwestią językową we współczesnym świecie to: 1) dominacja języka angielskiego jako języka międzynarodowego, wspomagana przez procesy globalizacji i ułatwiająca globalizację, która stawia w nierównej sytuacji ludność świata i wywołuje opór ze strony ludności nieangielskojęzycznej; 2) wymieranie języków w wyniku asymilacji małych grup etnojęzykowych. Zjawisko to wywołuje zaniepokojenie niektórych kręgów społecznych i naukowych; 3) bariera językowa utrudniająca rozwój oświaty, gospodarki i demokracji w wielu częściach świata, zwłaszcza w krajach postkolonialnych; 4) migracje międzynarodowe. Stawiają one wobec samych migrantów oraz władz i społeczeństw krajów przyjmujących problem stosunku do zachowania tożsamości kulturowo-językowej imigrantów, różnie rozwiązywany w różnych krajach i okresach historycznych.
The language question are phenomena resulting from contacts of two or more languages on the same territory or in the same community. It consists in co-existence and/or conflicts of languages and in language policies carried out by national and regional governments, and by ethnic movements aiming at maintaining or changing the language situation on a given territory. The main issues linked to the language question in the contemporary world are the following: 1) domination of the English language as an international language, supported by the globalisation and facilitating the globalisation. The domination of English puts on unequal footing people of the world and causes dissatisfaction of some parts of non-English native speakers; 2) extinction of languages as a result of assimilation of small ethno-linguistic groups. This phenomenon generates alarm of some groups of scientists and public opinion; 3) language barrier hampering development of education, economy and democracy in many parts of the world, especially in the post-colonial countries; 4) international migrations. These put migrants themselves and societies and governments of recipient countries in front of the question of the attitude towards maintaining of the cultural and linguistic identity of the migrants, this question being solved in different ways in different countries and historical periods.

Opis:: The paper addresses the issue of refugees in the broad sense of the term, i.e. people forced to leave their homes and seek conditions for a normal life due to climate change and to the excessive environment footprint left by humans. The numerous reasons for this type of displacement include drought, the grow-ing scarcity of natural resources in seas and oceans, and the unfair distribution of water. These three climate plagues are analysed on the basis of non¬ fiction literature – Wykluczeni [The Excluded], which is a book of reportage by Artur Domosławski, Ben Rawlence’s City of Thorns. Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refu-gee Camp, and Stefano Liberti’s South of Lampedusa. In the public consciousness, migrations motivated by climate change and human interference in the ecosys-tem have been functioning since recently, but they will actually become the greatest challenge of our day and age. This is why the important role played by humanities is to speak about them, to comment on their performative power, to debate on potential solutions, and to trigger warning discourses leading to the development of a habit of imagining “scenarios for the future”. Acts of imagi-nation provide the possibility to shape the world in an unlimited way and to play out in a virtual manner some key social, cultural and political situations, in order to live well on an overcrowded planet, where water, land and food may be lacking a few decades from now.

Opis:: The author points to the changes which the students have undergone throughout past few years. She bases her arguments on the students’ answers to the survey which she conducted in primary, junior high and high schools. Two features are especially prominent among the young, Polish generation: it takes longer for the teenagers to reach emotional maturity and their approach to learning is strictly pragmatic. Such situation creates a need for rethinking the curriculum as well as the form of conveying it on every stage of education. Since currently all changes take place very fast, with is typical for our Times, the author emphasises that it is important to monitor these changes and that such surveys are crucial before introducing any educational reforms.

Opis:: This study analyzes the influence of English medium instruction (EMI) on student English writing development in a Spanish undergraduate context, a language skill that remains underexplored in EMI research at tertiary level. Through a longitudinal pre- and post-test method, it explores the writing progress of EMI engineering students as compared to the achievement of a group of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners, according to different quantitative and qualitative writing measures. Results show a positive impact of EMI on student writing development at the levels of lexical accuracy and vocabulary. However, other writing areas, such as syntax, grammar, organization, or fluency, appeared unaffected. These findings challenge, to some extent, the widespread assumption that EMI contributes to improving student English language proficiency. This study suggests that sole exposure to the language in EMI contexts does not suffice to improve students’ English writing abilities beyond the area of vocabulary. Therefore, it argues for the inclusion of language skill support within EMI programs to provide students with opportunities to achieve a comprehensive development of their English language and writing competence.

Celem pracy jest analiza czasopisma „Business English Magazne” z naciskiem na słownictwo, struktury językowe, strukturę i zawartość magazynu oraz jego cel edukacyjny. Ten magazyn jest alternatywnym sposobem nauki angielskiego języka biznesu i jest to nowa forma edukacji językowej, która może pomóc Polakom nauczyć się nowego żargonu, rozwijać umiejętności językowe i poszerzyć ich wiedzę poprzez czytanie artykułów.
The subject matter of this Master Thesis is Business English which is becoming an important aspect on the Polish job market. The project describes globalization, and its influence on the creation of Polish corporate jargon. Moreover, terms such as lingua franca and communication are defined and explained. Furthermore, the issues of the importance of language and adult education are raised. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the “Business English Magazine” with the focus on vocabulary, language, structure and contents, and the educational purpose. This magazine is an alternative way of learning Business English and it is a new form of language education which may help Poles to learn a new jargon, increase language skills, and widen their knowledge by reading articles.
