Construction and performance of an optical phase and frequency lock of diode lasers
Autorzy:
Kawalec, Tomasz
Bartoszek-Bober, Dobrosława
Opis:
The relative phase and frequency stabilization setups for diode lasers are discussed. The construction and performance of an optical phase lock loop based on integrated phase-locked loop chips are shown along with practical tips facilitating its preparation. The interference pattern between two electronically locked lasers is shown as a proof of the system stability. The fringes contrast is a quantitative indicator of the mean-square phase error. Finally, an example of a very simple frequency offset lock realized with an all-in-one radio chip is also provided.

The research and technical achievements in the area of lasers are summarized every three years by the National Symposium on Laser Technology held in the Baltic See Resort ´S winouj´scie near Szczecin, Poland. The paper presents a review of the main symposium subjects tracks debated during this key national laser event in September 2012. There are shown development tendencies of laser materials and technologies and laser associated branches of optoelectronics in this country, including the efforts of academia, governmental institutes, research businesses and industry. The symposium work are divided to two branches: development of lasers and laser applications, where the laser systems operators and laser users present their achievements. Topical tracks of the meeting are presented, as well as the keynote and invited subjects delivered by key representatives of the laser industry. The STL 2012 was a jubilee meeting held for the Xth time.

Opis:
Przedstawiono pomiar przemieszczeń i naprężeń kół zębatych metodą interferometrii holograficznej.
The estimation of displacements and stresses of gear wheels with use of holographic interferometry is presented . A gear wheel was an object of investigations. The double exposure method of optic holography was used for measurements. As a result of the interference of the reference and main wave on a light sensitive material, an image of interferential striae was obtained. On the basis of this image, displacements and stresses of the studied object could be determined. The gear wheel tested is shown in Fig. 1, whereas the scheme of the test stand is presented in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the load of the gear wheel. The standard beam is depicted in Fig. 4. Based on the interferometry striae shown in Fig.5, the displacements and stresses were determined. The loads at the stop of the tooth and at the pitch diameter are given in Tabs. 1 and 2. The stresses with the load at the stop are shown in Fig. 6. The stresses with the load on the pitch diameter are shown in Fig. 7. Based on the results given in Tabs.1 and 2, the displacements and stresses of the studied object were determined. In this work the holographic method and the method of finite elements were used.

Opis:
In this paper, we review a number of recent developments concerning laser or laser-based sources generating pico- or subpicosecond pulses of light at wavelengths now ranging from the mid Infra-Red (50 ľm) to the XUV (11,9 nm). Those include the new generation of 'Chirp Pulse Amplification' laser systems, Free Electron Lasers operating in the IR or visible range, and a number of laser driven sources covering the XUV range, and a number of laser driven sources covering the XUV range, generally based on the high intensity irradiation of solid or gaseous targets. The main perspectives, applications and essential issues concerning such sources are discussed.

Opis:
For the last decade a very attractive field of laser physics, namely the optical frequency comb technique, has been intensively developed. Fiber lasers play particular role in that area. The motivation of their development is obtaining broadband comb systems with well-defined and stable mods (comb teeth). This paper presents a basic overview devoted to the fiber-based optical frequency combs.

Opis:
A mode-locked Tm3+-doped fibre laser and amplifier operating at a central wavelength of 1994.3 nm is demonstrated. A thulium oscillator is passively mode-locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror to generate an average power of 17 mW at a fundamental repetition rate of 81 MHz in a short linear cavity. This 2-μm laser train is amplified to an average power to 20.26 W by two double-clad thulium-doped all-fibre amplifiers. The pulse energy, duration and peak power is 250 nJ, 23 ps and 9.57 kW, respectively. This represents one of the highest values of average power at ~2-μm-wavelength for picosecond thulium-doped fibre lasers and amplifiers. The performance of the laser system is described in details.

Opis:
Free electron laser FELs are built in Europe mainly as nondependent infrastructures, or as a development of synchrotron ones. They are constructed mainly in centres which have considerable experience with synchrotron light sources of the third generation like DESY, Trieste, INFN, etc. Advances in very energetically efficient superconducting linear accelerators for electron beams, like TESLA type, caused an abrupt development of FEL machines all over Europe. New generation of FELs emits light beam of extreme intensity, good parameters, in IR, VIS, UV, EUV and X-ray spectral regions. The machine construction teams comprise also of young active researchers from Poland. In particular, these is a considerable participation of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students from Warsaw University of Technology at building of FLASH I, FLASH II, and EXFEL machines. Unique experiences gathered at work with these large experiments result in development of these young teams, and their further engagement in new initiatives: laser, laser - accelerator, inertial, plasma, plasma - energy, etc. This is what we observe with satisfaction. However, due to the lack of large research infrastructures in Poland, we are not members of the infrastructure owner clubs. Our young researchers may take part in the initiatives only indirectly as members of cooperative teams from the leading countries. As a further consequence, there is also a confined access of Polish laser and accelerator researchers to some kinds of European infrastructure development projects now under realization within the H2020.

Opis:
The fabrication of Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) emitting at 9.4 um is reported. The devices operated in pulsed mode at up to 260 K. The peak powers recorded in 77 K were over 1 W, and the slope efficiency 0.5–0.6 W/A per uncoated facet. This has been achieved by the use of GaAs/Al0.45Ga0.55As heterostructure, with 3QW anticrossed-diagonal design originally proposed by Page et al. [1]. Double plasmon planar confinement with Al-free waveguide has been used to minimize absorption losses. The double trench lasers were fabricated using standard processing technology, i.e., wet etching and Si3N4 for electrical insulation. The QCL structures have been grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE), with Riber Compact 21T reactor. The stringent requirements – placed particularly on the epitaxial technology – and the influence of technological conditions on the device structure properties are presented and discussed in depth.
