This work was supported by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science (Applied Doctorate Program, No. DWD/5/0149/2021).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the processes occurring during the refining of lead with aluminum, by analyzing and studying ternary Pb-(M)-Al systems, where M is one of the following metals: Sb, As, Se, Cu or Ni, which are the main contaminants of secondary lead from recycling waste lead-acid batteries. The Pb-Sb-Ca system, crucial for removing antimony while retaining tin, was also analyzed. The research included analysis of 2- and 3-component phase systems simulated, process kinetics under laboratory conditions for pure ternary systems, and chemical and phase composition analysis. Phase analysis showed the presence of permanent aluminum compounds such as AlSb, AlAs, Al2Se3,Al3Ni and phases with copper in the dross. In addition to the direct association of aluminum with a given contaminant, aluminum oxides such as Al0.5Sb0.5O2 and AlAsO4 as well as calcium oxide with antimony Ca4Sb2O7 were also found in the dross. On the basis of the tests carried out, 680 C was considered the optimal temperature for starting the refining process, with the amount of aluminum that was approx. The research provides new scientific data toward more efficient secondary lead refining technologies relevant to recycling waste lead-acid batteries and producing lead-tin alloys for the battery industry.

Opis:
Introduction: Over the last 10 years, there has been an increasing number of patients with pacemaker (PM) and cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). This study is a retrospective analysis of indications for endocardial pacemaker and ICD lead extractions between 2003 and 2009 based on the experience of three Polish Referral Lead Extraction Centers. Material and methods: Since 2003, the authors have consecutively retrospectively collected all cases and entered the information in the database. All patients which had indication for lead extraction according to Heart Rhythm Society Guidelines were included to final analyze. Between 2003 and 2005, the data were analyzed together. Since 2006, data have been collected and analyzed annually. Results: In each year, a significant increase in lead extraction was observed. The main indications for LE were infections in 52.4% of patients. Nonfunctioning lead extraction constituted the second group of indications for LE in 29.7% of patients. During the registry period, the percentage of class I indications decreased from 80% in 2006 to only 47% in 2009. On the other hand, increasingly more leads were removed because of class 2, especially class 2b. In 2009, 40% of leads were extracted due to class 2b. Conclusions: Polish Registry of Endocardial Lead Extraction 2003-2009, shows an increasing frequency of lead extraction. The main indication for LE is infection: systemic and pocket. An increase in class 2, especially 2b, LE indication in every center during the study period was found.

Opis:
Projectiles made of lead alloys are used for waterfowl hunting in Europe. The paper demonstrated that lead pellets, due to their construction and use, contaminate the environment, especially water ecosystems. During one hunting session, tens of thousands of lead balls are introduced to the environment. Moreover, dispersed heavy metal is ingested by birds as gastroliths; as a result, game birds as well as protected birds become intoxicated with lead. During hunting trips, birds are also injured. When entering into the food chain, lead from pellets poses a risk to many living organisms, including predators and scavengers. Injured or intoxicated birds have difficulty joining seasonal migrations. Meat, especially of wild ducks and geese, is consumed during the hunting season by hunters and their families. Considering the level of lead in the muscles of game birds, venison consumers are also exposed to lead intoxication. In Europe, an increasing number of hunters who use lead pellets has resulted in lead being accumulated in game birds, which is a hazard to the public health. In view of the above facts and other hazards resulting from hunting, which endanger humans and animals, the authors recommend a total ban on waterfowl hunting.

Opis:
The presented case demonstrates that acute lead poisoning may occur due to just short-term exposure to a mixture of lead-containing dust and ammunition. Such exposure may result in high blood lead levels persisting for years in the absence of any symptoms. A middle-aged male with a history of an approximately 7-day cleanup of an old recreational firing range with large ammunition and dust deposits presented to an emergency department with abdominal pain, dyspnea, fatigue and impaired cognitive function. Given his occupational history, specific tests were performed that showed high lead concentrations in both blood and urine. The patient was diagnosed with acute lead poisoning. He was started on chelation therapy that improved both clinical and laboratory parameters. Over a subsequent nearly 3-year follow-up, the patient’s blood lead levels fluctuated and continued to be increased. Given the absence of other sources of lead exposure, these were likely due to the formation of bone deposits. Med Pr. 2020;71(3):375–9

Percutaneous removal of endocardial implantable cardioverter-defibrillator lead displaced to the right pulmonary artery

Opis:
We describe a case of percutaneous removal of endocardial implantable cardioverter-defibrillator lead displaced to the right pulmonary artery. The procedure was performed from two accesses; from the lower one (femoral) and then, due to technical problems, from the upper one (subclavian). In the last stage the flattened Dotter’s basket was introduced to the heart inside the Byrd dilator and then fastened to the described lead as the external ‘splint’. This solution is an alternative to the recommended use of the internal metal leader with anchoring function in case of significant malformation of the internal lumen of the lead. The procedure we describe is an example of the sort of individual, original solution indispensable for the efficient and safe removal of untypically displaced leads.

Opis:
In order to recover lead from the zinc leaching residues, a new technology involving selective reduction of lead sulfate to lead sulfide with carbon followed by flotation was investigated. The reduction thermodynamics of PbSO4 was discussed and the effects of molar ratio of C to PbSO4, reaction temperature and time were examined by thermogravimetry (TG) and XRD. Verification tests were further carried out to prove the conclusions of thermodynamic and TG analyses, and the transformation extent could reach 86.45% under the optimal roasting conditions. The prepared galena was then subjected to micro-flotation tests, and the highest lead recovery could reach up to 75.32%.

Opis:
Hemimorphite is important-supplementary resource for the commercial zinc production, but it easy loses into tailings due to extreme difficulty for its surface sulfidization. Adding active metal ions after sulfidization have been widely proposed for enhancing hemimorphite floatability, but its desired efficiency in flotation practice has not yet been completely achieved caused by the instability of sulfide layer. Whereas pre-adsorption of active metal ions to modify the hemimorphite surface has strong potential to make up for this shortcoming. Herein, the feasibility and appropriate environment of free Pb2+ for modifying the pure hemimorphite surface was evaluated. Subsequently, the performance of Pb2+ adsorption for enhancing sulfidization stability and floatability of hemimorphite were investigated. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the Pb2+ adsorption on hemimorphite surface was achieved through the Pb ions displacement for Zn ions, and it was bond to oxygen-containing groups on hemimorphite surface. Such adsorption was strengthened with the increasing of solution pH, owing to the abundant Pb hydroxyl species precipitated on mineral under alkaline conditions, in term of the results of visual MINTEQ modeling and time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry. In addition, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed dominant Pb hydroxyl species further reacted with sulfur during subsequent sulfidization to generate much more S species than that of without Pb2+ pre-modification. Meanwhile, such sulfide layer composed by Pb2+ on the mineral surface presented much higher stability than Zn-S species, which was verified via adsorption and desorption tests. As a result, the sulfidization and flotation recovery of hemimorphite increased after Pb2+ pre-adsorption.

Opis:
The problems of synthesis, properties and applications of environmentally-friendly, primary explosives are discussed. Several prospective, lead-free primary explosives have been prepared and thoroughly studied during recent decades. However, the manufacture of modern, 'green' energetic materials on an industrial scale for practical applications in civil and military primers, is a task for the near future.
