Opis:
This study introduced an anthropomorphized robot-assisted instructional tool that we developed for English as a foreign language (EFL) learning and assessed the effectiveness of robot-assisted English learning. An experimental design was adopted in this study and a total of 53 Taiwanese students in the third grade of elementary school participated in the experiment, including: one class consisting of 28 students, which was labeled as the experimental group, while another class of 25 students was labeled as the control group. There were two kinds of data collection that were used in this study: two tests (listening-and-acting as well as questioning-and-answering tests) and a questionnaire (learning material motivation scale). On the whole, the experimental group performed better than the control group on the listening-and-acting as well as on the questioning-and-answering tests. Additionally, the experimental group had higher learning material motivation than the control group, inclusive of attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction domains. The overall results suggest a new paradigm about our applications in teaching and learning English for Taiwanese EFL elementary school students.

Mathematics is the universal compartment through which both the study and the discovery of the surrounding environment take place. At the same time, mathematics is the academic discipline through which the formation of logical and practical thinking is pursued, so for the students of pedagogical specialties this discipline is an abstract science about which students know only what they have learned in gymnasium. Therefore, the motivation and professional orientation for studying mathematics are necessary, allowing in this context the application of mathematical knowledge and skills acquired in practical activities. This article thoroughly analyses the concept of motivation, but also addresses the motivation issue of the students in post-secondary technical vocational education – future primary school teachers in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, the problematic aspects of the professional training process of future primary school teachers are determined

Badanie czynników leżących u podłoża motywacji do nauki języka angielskiego wśród polskich uczniów gimnazjum i szkoły średniej – studium przypadku
Autorzy:
Biegaj, Katarzyna
Opis:
The main aim of this MA thesis is to report on investigation of the eight factors underlying the motivation to learn English of the junior and senior secondary schools students. Another aim of this study was to compare the answers of the two age groups mentioned above in order to find out whether motivation to learn the foreign language changes with the age of the students. A questionnaire was constructed on the basis of the issues discussed in the mainstream motivational studies and it was administered to 101 pupils in two state schools in Cracow. The analysis of the data revealed that the students taking part in the research most frequently learn English because they need it to communicate with foreigners (English native speakers as well as people of other nationalities) or because they are aware of the fact that the knowledge of English is an indispensable condition to realise their dreams about higher education or a well-paid job. At the same time, it must be noted that contrary to the hypothesis formulated in the aims of the research, the analysis of the data did not reveal any changes in motivation with age.

Opis:
Abstract The study examined the effect of a commercial digital video game on high school students’ language learning motivation. Participants were 241 male students randomly assigned to one of the following three treatments: Readers, who intensively read the game’s story; Players, who played the digital video game; and Watchers, who watched two classmates play the digital video game. A language learning motivation scale was given to the participants as a pre- and post-test. Also, field notes were taken. Results indicated a significant language learning motivation increase over time. Only the Watchers, however, showed significantly higher motivation than the Readers in the end. Thus, the use of commercial digital video games can help enhance high school students’ language learning motivation.

Opis:
One critical problem most educators have possibly experienced is that some students drop out of school probably due to loss of enough motivation. Research indicates student engagement could not only increase motivation but help to sustain it at high levels. This relationship between these two constructs has already been researched quantitatively in language education. However, little research seems to have been done on exploring the ways of increasing student engagement and motivation in relation to each other using a qualitative design. The present study thus aimed at investigating the ways to improve student engagement as well as motivation with a qualitative design. The participants were 30 male, intermediate EFL learners of the Iran Language Institute (ILI) in Gorgan, Iran. These participants, selected through convenience sampling, attended the semi-structured interview sessions voluntarily. The findings of the study led to a model of determinants of student engagement and language learning motivation. These determinants include teacher behavior, teacher personality, and student behavior for student engagement, and teacher, self, and parents for language learning motivation. It is expected the outcomes will be to the benefit of language teachers, language learners, and materials developers.

Opis:
In recent years increased attention has been given in applied linguistics to the learning processes of various groups of special needs (SN) students, especially to those whose achievement is impeded by dyslexia or other learning difficulties. However, students with sensory impairment, particularly those who are Deaf or severely hard of hearing (HOH), seem to have remained on the periphery of second language acquisition (SLA) research although they constitute a highly interesting group both from a linguistic as well as a cultural point of view. Since the best approach to understanding how this special minority handles foreign language learning is by first exploring their so-called individual differences, a nationwide research project was launched in Hungary to investigate students’ language learning beliefs, motivation, strategy use and motivated learning behavior. As part of that project, the present paper intends to detail how self-related concepts of hearing impaired students at eight different SN schools  an be described. In order to gain an in-depth understanding, a mixed-method research design was employed. First, a barrier-free instrument was used to measure learner variables among 105 14-19-year-old Deaf and HOH learners. Then 31 individual interviews were conducted with selected students using maximum variety sampling. The quantitative data indicate that Deaf and HOH (D/HH) learners lack pronounced, well-developed and detailed future ideal L2 selves and corresponding visions to guide their learning. Another important finding is the paramount importance of language learning experience for our D/HH participants. Based on the analysis of the qualitative data, we can conclude that students’ language learning experiences are largely shaped by the choice of language used as the medium of education, the intensity and content of the English classes as well as how far students internalize extrinsic motives.

Opis:
Inspired by the unexpected results of a standardized questionnaire survey of Swiss university students’ motivation and attitudes toward English, the paper discusses the influence of global and local contexts on language learners’ motivation and identity. As a result of the unprecedented spread of English as a foreign language (Crystal, 2003; Graddol, 2006), and, more importantly, the underlying social and economic issues that it reflects, elements of the global context intermingle with local realities to create new learning experiences, unaccounted for by traditional research paradigms. Individuals find themselves at the convergence of multiple contexts that affect and are in turn affected by their language attitudes and identity as well as sense of self. The intricate relationships between contexts and individuals continue to gain emphasis in current approaches to language learning motivation (cf. Dörnyei, MacIntyre, & Henry, 2015), which position L2 learnin in a new light, questioning the power and relevance of different motivational categories and also these of a generalizable theoretical model. The quantitative study presented in this paper explores interrelationships among key elements of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2009) and a number of motivational factors on the one hand, contrasting them against the economic and social background of the Swiss context on the other. The findings of the project reveal that such repositioning of the participants in the multicultural, plurilingual environment of Geneva and its socioeconomic reality was indeed essential to the interpretation of the results since the extraordinary strength of external and societal factors in participants’ motivational profile gained meaning only in the light of the particularities of the local context. Therefore, the paper showcases the potential of a broader perspective on L2 motivation and the importance of learner-context relationships.

Opis:
The article substantiates the importance of using a communicative approach in foreign language teaching. The term “communication” is interpreted by scientists as a totality, meaningful generalisation of theoretical and practical knowledge presented in the form of concepts, principles, provisions that promote mutual understanding, and situations necessary for successful interactions. The purpose of teaching a foreign language in a higher education institution is the possession of future teachers of communicative competencies that allow them to implement their knowledge, skills and abilities to solve creative problems. The principles of communicative learning are determined: the principle of speech and mental activity, individualisation, functionality, and novelty. The main factors of effective application of the communicative approach important for teaching a foreign language are highlighted: communicative orientation of all kinds of training; the main link in learning by their interests, abilities, and needs; teaching materials are presented on a thematic or functional basis. Communicative teaching methods are identified, which are based on a humanistic approach and aimed at the development and self-improvement of the individual, the disclosure of its reserve capabilities and creative potential, create conditions for effective improvement of education in higher education. The scientific novelty of forming students’ communicative skills in higher education institutions is determined by changes in the education system, focusing on the formation of communicative competence of future professionals. The use of pedagogical tasks in foreign language classes allows students to form a communicative culture, skills and abilities of foreign language communication; contributes to the real, personal preparation of students for future professional activities; makes foreign language classes more interesting and meaningful. Orientation of foreign language classes on the development of professionally necessary communicative skills and communicative culture ensures the implementation of the principles of the contextual approach of learning, increases students’ motivation for learning and the success of foreign language learning.
