Opis:: As underlined in Wierzbicka (1996: 239), a «linguistic definition is a scientific hypothesis about the concept encoded in a given word». The present paper focuses on the problem of what such hypothesis is about. Lexicon of any language is structured with a set of connections relating lexical items. That is to say that speakers of any language need to master not only separate words, but rather a cluster of connected senses. If so, then a lexical definition should lay out the concept the word lexicalizes in the way that gives access to the whole grasp of its conceptual, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. We discuss the topic of definitional structures developed in the context of the French Lexical Network (Réseau Lexical du Français).

Opis:: S. B. Linde’s Dictionary (1807-1815) is the first general dictionary of the Polish language in the history of Polish lexicography in which the entries had to be described with respect to their semantics. Lexical definitions are an important part of this description. Linde introduces all possible types of definitions: synonymic, pertaining to the actual meaning of the word, structural-semantic, structural, grammatical, definitions per oppositionem and mixed definitions. Synonymic definitions (formed according to the rule of substitution) and mixed ones (a symptom of aspiration for the possibly fullest semantic characteristics of the word) appear in the Dictionary most often. On the other hand, structural-semantic and structural definitions, formulated on the basis of theoretical-grammatical knowledge, are usually not full, and sometimes indeed incorrect. However, they are a precious source of information about Linde’s lexicographic and linguistic consciousness.

Opis:: Analiza semantyczna terminu „legitymizacja” jest zagadnieniem szczególnie doniosłym z uwagi na to, że ustalenie rozumienia tego terminu ma fundamentalne znaczenie dla dalszych rozważań nad tak ważnymi kwestiami, jak legitymizacja władzy sądowniczej czy pozycji ustrojowej sędziego. W doktrynie prawa konstytucyjnego brakuje pogłębionych analiz semantycznych, które pozwoliłyby na precyzyjną eksplikację tego, co myślą prawnicy, gdy używają terminu „legitymizacja”. Nawet pobieżna analiza literatury z tego zakresu pozwala na wyciągnięcie wstępnego wniosku, że w znacznej części rozpatrywanych spraw brak jest refleksji nad znaczeniem samego pojęcia „legitymizacja”. W niniejszym opracowaniu autor dokonał analizy definicji tego pojęcia, które pojawiają się w słownikach języka polskiego, a następnie skonfrontował ustalone znaczenia z rozumieniem „legitymizacji” w języku prawnym i prawniczym. We wnioskach autor wskazuje na dwa podstawowe sposoby rozumienia pojęcia „legitymizacja” i zaproponował ich rozróżnienie poprzez przypisanie jednemu z tych znaczeń terminu „legitymizacja”, a drugiemu „legitymacja”.
The semantic analysis of the term “legitimisation” is a particularly major issue, because determining the understanding of this term has a fundamental meaning for further considerations of such important issues as the legitimisation of the power, the judiciary or the systemic position of a judge. In the doctrine of the constitutional law there are lacks in-depth semantic analyzes that would allow a precise explication of what lawyers think when they use the term “legitimisation”. Even a cursory analysis of the literature in this field could allow us to draw a preliminary conclusion that when we discuss about this term, in a significant part of the cases considered, there is no reflection on the meaning of the concept of “legitimisation” itself. In this study, author analyzed definitions of this concept, which appears in the dictionaries of the Polish language, and then confronted the established meanings with the understanding of “legitimisation” in the legal and lawyers’ language. In conclusions, author points two basic ways of understanding the term “legitimisation” and proposed to distinguish them by assigning the phrase “legitimacy” to one of these meanings, and “legitimisation” to the other.

Opis:: Due to social changes, but also as a result of human cognitive openness, when reconstructing the meanings of words, contemporary lexical semantics should depart from colloquiality as the only descriptive criterion. The present work proposes the formula of the open definition of meaning. Apart from the semantic-colloquial conceptual center it should also take into consideration simplified scientific knowledge about the world and human creative abilities to produce special semantic transformations of a word that are observable, for example, in artistic texts or language games. The meaning of a word, alike the structure of a concept, is relative and open.

Opis:: The paper intends to outline a reconstruction of the linguistic picture of proverb in Polish. The author makes an overview of the information given in the dictionaries of both historical and modern Polish, i.e. etymology of the word przysłowie (proverb), its lexicographical definitions, word formation derivatives and idioms.
Artykuł poświęcony jest rekonstrukcji obrazu przysłowia w polszczyźnie. Autor wychodzi od etymologii wyrazu przysłowie, a następnie analizuje informacje podawane w słownikach polszczyzny ogólnej – zarówno historycznych, jak i współczesnych – definicje leksykograficzne, derywaty słowotwórcze, utarte połączenia wyrazowe.
