The article contains a summary of a visit to Ireland under the Erasmus+ programme. The Dublin City University Library and other Dublin libraries are presented: Marsh's Library, the Chester Beatty Library, the National Library of Ireland and the Trinity College Library. The activities of two libraries in Northern Ireland are also described: the Linen Hall Library and the Belfast Central Library.

Opis:: The historical building in 26 Koszykowa Street is the seat of a Public Library established almost a hundred years ago for the capital city of Warsaw. In 2007 this institution will be celebrating its round anniversary. Created in 1907 thanks to the initiative of the Public Library Society, it has been almost uninterruptedly gathering and rendering available scientific collections and the belles lettres. From 1914 it is housed in an object erected due to the funds and efforts of Eugenia Kierbedz, born Kierbedz, the daughter of Stanislaw, an outstanding communications engineer and the author of the first permanent bridge across the Vistula in Warsaw. The Library was designed by acclaimed architects: Jan Heurich Junior and his collaborators - Wladyslaw Marconi and Artur Gurney. The building is composed of the two-storey main part which occupies the whole width of the front of the lot, and a single-storey outbuilding in the back, connected by means of a narrow and also one-story passage, perpendicular to the north-south axis. The most representative is the front fragment and the passage built on a ground plan similar to the letter T, which originally served predominantly library purposes. It still houses the large reading room featuring lavish architectural outfitting, harmoniously corresponding to the monumental facade which refers to the principles of Classical architecture. The outbuilding adjoining the passage and granted two wings of different width and height (on the ground plan of the letter L) formerly contained book storerooms, which burnt down during the second world war. Almost from its very outset the Library has been forced to tackle assorted problems involving available space. Successive postwar transformations (such as the erection of a new reading rooms building on the spot of a non-extant house in 28 Koszykowa Street) managed to meet the constantly growing needs of this institution for only a brief space of time. This is the reason why despite numerous failures, up to this day the Library has not resigned from efforts to expand and modernise its facilities. The results of a competition organised by SARP have been announced in December 2005. First prize for a conception of enlarging the Library went to the Bulanda, Mucha Architekci Sp. z o.o. studio. The adaptation of the Library buildings complex will be carried out in stages, and its completion is foreseen for 2007. Will it be conducted with due respect for the historical substance, or shall it assume the form of a successful integration of the new with the old; finally, will it add splendour to the anniversary of the hundred-years old institution? We still do not know the answer.

Opis:: The collections of the Library of Silesian Clerical Seminary, which history dates back to the 1920s, have not been examined satisfactorily to date. In the interwar period the library built its collections through purchases and generous donations. The article focuses on this part of donations which came from the authors themselves, mainly priests of Kraków archdiocese and Katowice diocese, secular persons in a minor extent. They donated 50 works in total, among them books, dissertations and articles previously published in periodicals. All of them were the latest publications on theology, Church history and related studies and covered a wide spectrum of religious issues. Some books are signed with author’s inscription, which greatly increases their value.

Opis:: W artykule scharakteryzowano aspekty kształtowania księgozbioru biblioteki akademickiej. Przedstawione zostały działania bezpośrednio i pośrednio dotyczące gromadzenia zbiorów w Docklands Library – jednej z trzech bibliotek wchodzących w skład Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Wschodniego Londynu. Najważniejsze czynniki mające wpływ na nabywanie księgozbioru w tej i innych bibliotekach akademickich to: potrzeby użytkownika, budżet, charakter naukowy uniwersytetu, przewidywane tendencje w rozwoju dyscyplin akademickich. Autorka wskazuje rolę biblioteki jako ośrodka, którego misja opiera się na utrzymaniu jak najwyższego poziomu merytorycznego księgozbioru i usług.
The present article describes and discusses the aspects of structuring a library collection in an academic library. Direct and indirect actions aimed at improving the acquisitions policy at Docklands Library, one of the three libraries comprising the East London Library, are presented. The most important factors influencing acquisition at this, as well as other academic libraries, include: user’s needs, budget, research mission of the university, and envisaged tendencies in the development of academic disciplines. In conclusion, the author identifies the role of the library as a center whose mission is to maintain the highest possible substantive level of its book collection and provided services.

Opis:: Contemporary libraries of the twenty-first century are characterized by a marked fluctuation of roles and functions commonly ascribed to them. Librarians are expected to be capable of anticipating them and addressing them appropriately in order to satisfy the requirements set up by users. This article is an attempt to discuss the most important changes that have hitherto been done and to indicate those areas of the activity of research, academic, public and, to a lesser degree, school libraries in which those changes will be particularly pronounced. Anticipated roles and tasks within the management and access to resources, building up own electronic resources and their processing, library space, embarking on tasks hitherto not regarded as strictly ''library" tasks as well as the most important changes in the author's view such as those to be introduced in user services, in-service trainings, education and propagation of knowledge are discussed in the article. The author believes that the new functions, on par with those already existing, should be subjected to actual users, but also to potential ones, even deeper than before. This should effect in creating the library environment as a ''meeting place", some kind of a social space to perform entirely new functions superimposed onto traditional ones in the library information. The new functions will include performing new cultural, educational, social, artistic and communal tasks carried out with a co-operation with other libraries, scientific, educational and cultural instructions. Additionally, the problem of changes in work force management, so vital in the supposed and anticipated transformation of the library and its functions, is evaluated and discussed.

Electronic and literary library collections for children and teenagers in a middle-sized city

Opis:: Niniejsza praca skupia się na omówieniu literackiej i elektronicznej oferty bibliotecznej dla młodzieży w mieście średniej wielkości. Przy analizie autorka posłużyła się metodą case study, badając ofertę proponowaną przez biblioteki w Tarnobrzegu. Praca ta ma uzupełnić lukę, jaka obecna jest w teoretycznych rozważaniach dotyczących ofert bibliotecznych. Często bowiem pomijana jest grupa wiekowa pomiędzy 15 a 19 rokiem życia, a to właśnie ta wymaga poświęcenia jej dużej uwagi. Rozważania dotyczą zarówno potrzeb, jakie wskazują sami młodzi czytelnicy, jak i tych proponowanych przez bibliotekarzy, pedagogów oraz psychologów. Ukazane są przykłady możliwych rozwiązań, dzięki którym biblioteka stanie się miejscem nie tylko potrzebnym ale również atrakcyjnym dla młodzieży. Ukazanie możliwych zmian oraz próba stworzenia oferty, która będzie zaspokajała te potrzeby ma na celu przedstawienie zalet oraz niedostatków, jakie dostrzec można w ofercie bibliotecznej kierowanej do tej grupy użytkowników. Po analizie ankiet uzupełnianych przez młodzież a także wywiadów przeprowadzonych z bibliotekarzami możliwe było zaproponowanie optymalnego modelu oferty literackiej i elektronicznej, która uwzględniałaby zarówno rekreacyjne jak i szkolne potrzeby młodzieży.
The following thesis focuses on describing both electronic and literary library collections for children and teenagers in a middle-sized city. When analysing these collections, the author of the work applied the "case study" method and examined the collections of the libararies in Tarnobrzeg. This thesis aims at filling the gap in theoretical considerations devoted to library collections. In such works, the 15-19 age group is very frequently omitted and it goes without saying that this group in particular ought be shown greater attention. The considerations below, relate to both the needs that young readers manifest themselves, as well as the ones indicated by librarians, teachers and psychologists. The examples of possible solutions to be implemented are shown, owing to which libriaries would become not only a place perceived as a neccessary one, but also an attractive and interesting place for teenagers. The presentation of the possible changes as well as an attempt to create a proposal that would meet those needs, aim at pointing out the assets and shortages that can be noticed in library collections for this group of readers. A careful analysis of questionnaires distributed among teenagers and interviews conducted with librarians enabled it to propose an optimal model of library and electronic collection that would take into consideration recreational and educational needs of teenagers.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted library activities. Libraries faced with a choice which services they can safely offer to their users to ensure that the readers always have access to the information they need. The article presents the functioning of the University of Lodz Library (BUŁ) during the pandemic. It presents the applied solutions and services adapted to the epidemiological situation, which allowed readers of the University of Lodz Library use its resources in a satisfactory and safe manner.
