Opis:: One of the most frequent ways of narrating everyday life in developed countries has been via the printed book. The invention of printing allowed for an ever-increasing mass production of documents of life that systematically established an era of communication and a political economy that had profound implications for the structure of living together. This article departs from the context of my own lifeworld: a lifeworld closely related to printed books. When attempting to explore and understand the overt and covert meanings embedded in the historical development of our social lives and the objects around us, we can turn for assistance to an analysis of the books on our shelves, books that have been constant companions for long periods of our lives. In this article, I propose that any valid interpretation, understanding, and depiction of social reality need to be, in essence, autobiographical. The autobiographical account I present includes how my personal life trajectory led me to the books that surround me. And how, in turn, these books become a reflection of myself and my roots.

Opis:: HIV remains a threat to the ordinary everyday life of older woman in African society. In what can be called “a reality shock,” HIV challenges most of the ordinary everyday endeavors in conservative African societies as it imposes new Western prevention, treatment, and health-management methods over long-held African traditions. The reality of the “Western” HIV epidemic, and its impact on the “African” ordinary everyday life, demands that the infected undergo a paradigm shift in order for them to live harmoniously within their society. This calls for a re-examination of traditional values and a strong sense of responsibility, courage, and determination to remain relevant and not be considered odd in one’s community, especially as one grows old with the virus. The study, which focuses on the experiences of women from the Manicaland Province in Zimbabwe who are aging with HIV, observes that growing old with an HIV infection fosters forms of inner strength and wisdom that enable the infected to disregard some of the unquestioned traditions and employ effective ways of living well with the life-threatening condition.

Opis:: Das semantische Feld des Lebensweltbegriffs dehnt sich auf Ontologie („In-der-Welt- Sein“), Anthropologie, Biologie, Naturwissenschaften überhaupt, sowie auf Soziologie aus. Mittlerweile ist aber auch ein inflationärer journalistischer Gebrauch festzustellen, der gleichsam den umgangssprachlichen, „lebensweltlichen“ Charakter des Lebensweltbegriffes bestätigt. Dies macht zugleich seine Stärke und seine Schwäche aus. Dem originären Husserl’schen Lebensweltbegriff selbst hat man deshalb seine Verschwommenheit oder gar Widersprüchlichkeit vorgeworfen, bezeichnet er doch einen Horizont von Horizonten – und zudem einen jeweils persönlichen, den meinigen, der mich in meinem Hier-Sein mit den Horizonten anderer Menschen verbindet. Von der Beobachtung ausgehend, dass der Husserl’sche Begriff von Geburt an sowohl wissenschafts- als auch kulturkritisch beladen ist und dass der Schein unmittelbarer Selbstverständlichkeit, mit der auf die Lebenswelt verwiesen wird, sich rasch als Reaktion auf eine Krisensituation – nämlich auf einen Verlust der Übersichtlichkeit – entpuppt, wird im folgenden Aufsatz versucht, das Verhältnis des Lebensweltbegriffs zur Politik und seine analytische Brauchbarkeit zu hinterfragen.
Semantyczne pole pojęcia „świat życia” rozciąga się na ontologię („bycie-w-świecie”), antropologię, biologię, nauki przyrodnicze w ogóle, a także na socjologię. Ale też można skonstatować pewien inflacyjny, dziennikarski sposób używania tego terminu, który jakby potwierdza jego potoczny, „życiowy“ charakter. Stanowi to zarówno o jego sile, jak i słabości. Dlatego źródłowemu Husserlowskiemu pojęciu świata życia zarzucano, że jest mgliste czy wręcz sprzeczne. Oznacza ono przecież horyzont horyzontów, a ponadto za każdym razem horyzont osobisty, mój, który mnie, w moim byciu tutaj, łączy z horyzontami innych ludzi. Wychodząc od obserwacji, że Husserlowskie pojęcie już od początku jest narażone na krytyki ze strony nauki i kultury oraz że pozór bezpośredniej oczywistości, z którą wskazuje się na świat życia, szybko okazuje się reakcją na sytuację kryzysu – a mianowicie na utratę przejrzystości – próbuję w poniższym artykule przebadać stosunek pojęcia świata życia do polityki oraz sprawdzić jego analityczną przydatność.
The semantic field of the notion of the “lifeworld” extends onto ontology (“being-in theworld”), anthropology biology, life sciences in general, as well as sociology. Meanwhile, however, is another, journalistic and inflationary, usage of the term spread in everyday life, which in a way confirms its informal, “lifelike” character. This is both a strength and a weakness. That’s exactly why the Husserlian notion has been accused of being vague or downright contradictory. Indeed, it means a horizon of horizons, and in every instance a personal horizon, one of my own, which connects me, in my being-here, with the horizons of others. The present text departs from the observation that the Husserlian notion involves since the beginning a culture-critical as well as a science-critical potential, and that the appearance of direct obviousness that is so typical of the reference to the lifeworld quickly turns out a reaction to a crisis, and specifically a loss of transparency. It attempts to examine the relation between the notion of the lifeworld to politics and tests its analytical usefulness.

Opis:: Projekt odnowy fenomenologii zaproponowany przez Claude’a Romana stanowi zarazem próbę jej ocalenia. Jego prace wywarły ogromny wpływ na fenomenologię we Francji i poza jej granicami. Znalazły też uznanie Akademii Francuskiej, która w 2010 roku przyznała mu Grand Prix Moron za całość jego dzieł fenomenologicznych, a w 2020 roku Grand Prix de Philosophie za całokształt twórczości. Jego badania rozwijają się w dwóch kierunkach. Pierwszym jest synteza metody fenomenologicznej. Drugim jest jego własny pomysł na fenomenologię, który polega na interpretacji doświadczenia jako wydarzenia. Według Romana pierwszym krokiem zmierzającym ku ratowaniu fenomenologii jest już samo otwarcie jej na inne wpływy oraz konfrontacja z wiodącymi nurtami współczesnej myśli i zarazem włączenie jej na nowo w debatę filozoficzną. Jednak dopiero zwrot w kierunku realizmu świata życia stanowi sedno postulowanej przez filozofa rewolucji antykopernikańskiej i jest dla fenomenologii tytułowym ocaleniem. Dlatego też stanowi również centralny problem tego artykułu.
The project of renewing phenomenology proposed by Claude Romano is at the same time an attempt to save it. His works have had an enormous impact on phenomenology in France and beyond. They have also been recognised by the French Academy, which awarded Romano the Grand Prix Moron in 2010 for the totality of his phenomenological works, and in 2020. Grand Prix de Philosophie for his entire body of work. His research is developing in two directions. The first is the synthesis of the phenomenological method. The second is his own idea of phenomenology, which involves interpreting experience as an event. According to Romano, the first step towards saving phenomenology lies already in opening it up to other influences and confronting it with the leading currents of contemporary thought and at the same time reintegrating it into the philosophical debate. However, it is only the turn towards the realism of the lifeworld that is at the heart of the anti-Copernican revolution postulated by Romano and is the aforementioned salvation for phenomenology. It therefore also constitutes the central problem of this article.

Opis:: The article takes up an issue of the Humboldt’s idea of university in two perspectives. In the first part of the analysis, in reference to the Max Weber’s lecture Wissenschaft als Beruf, we present the reasons for the failure of the Humboldt’s program due to the changes in the structure and function of the science, which occurred in the 19th century. In the second part, however, we depict the transformation of Humboldt’s program that was carried out by Wilhelm Dilthey. His justifying of humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) has retained, from today’s perspective, its topicality. It can be demonstrated with the aid of investigations of Jürgen Habermas, Eva Illouz and Hans Joas. Dilthey’s solutions, which continue the Humboldtian tradition, can be used to define the role and tasks of the humanities in the contemporary education model based on the idea of lifelong learning.

Opis:: Transformation has come to be a defining characteristic of contemporary societies, while it has rarely been studied in a way that gives acknowledgement to both its societal effects and the experience thereof by the individual. This article discusses a recent study that attempts to do just that. The everyday life of a South African is explored within the context of changes that can be linked, more or less directly, to those that have characterized South Africa as a state since the end of apartheid in 1994. The study strives to avoid the pitfalls associated with either an empirical or solely constructivist appreciation of this phenomenon, but rather represents an integral onto-epistemological framework for the practice of sociological research. The illustrated framework is argued to facilitate an analysis of social reality that encompasses all aspects thereof, from the objectively given to the intersubjectively constructed and subjectively constituted. While not requiring extensive development on the theoretical or methodological level, the possibility of carrying out such an integral study is highlighted as being comfortably within the capabilities of sociology as a discipline. While the article sheds light on the experience of transformation, it is also intended to contribute to the contemporary debate surrounding the current “ontological turn” within the social sciences.

Opis:: The aim of the article is the analysis of public discourse concerning the reforms of science and higher education in Poland, the effects of which largely affect young researchers and determine their careers and future social status. The author treats these transformations as Habermas’ ’crisis’ resulting from the dominance of technocratic consciousness. This situation generates both specific scenarios written by politicians/ economists/experts/officials for young researchers, as well as certain adaptation strategies of the researchers themselves. The empirical part of the article is the analysis of the public discourse in ’Gazeta Wyborcza’ and ’Tygodnik Powszechny’ concerning the reforms of Polish science involving symbolic elites and young researchers.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza dyskursu publicznego dotyczącego reform nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce, których skutki w dużej mierze dotykają młodych pracowników nauki, stając się wyznacznikiem ich karier i przyszłego statusu społecznego. Przemiany te traktuję jako Habermasowski „kryzys” wynikający z dominacji świadomości technokratycznej. Sytuacja ta generuje zarówno specyficzne scenariusze pisane przez polityków/ekonomistów/ekspertów/urzędników dla młodych naukowców, jak również określone strategie adaptacyjne samych zainteresowanych. Część empiryczną stanowi analiza dyskursu publicznego dotyczącego reform polskiej nauki z udziałem elit symbolicznych oraz młodych pracowników nauki tocząca się na łamach „Gazety Wyborczej” i Tygodnika Powszechnego”.
