Opis:
The oscillations of electrochemical potential difference between aqueous phases of a liquid membrane oscillator containing cationic surfactant are presented. By UV-VIS spectroscopy, the concentrations of liquid membrane components (nitrobenzene and picric acid) in the both aqueous phases were established during the oscillation process. It was shown that nitrobenzene molecules are transferred to the aqueous phases from the beginning of that dynamic process. Picric acid molecules are not observed in the donor phase, meanwhile, from the beginning of the process they are transported to the acceptor phase. It can be concluded that the transport of the liquid membrane components to the aqueous phases is not responsible for the observed oscillations of electrochemical potential difference.

The application of supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction for the enrichment of short peptides is presented. The extraction efficiency is dependent on the pH of donor phase and salt concentration in acceptor phase. Moreover, the extraction efficiency is also influenced by the peptide amino-acid sequence and hydrophobicity.

Opis:
Ionic liquids are widely used in supported ionic liquid membranes technology, especially in gas separation and purification processes. This work characterizes the ability of ionic liquids to wet commercially available porous supports used for such purposes. Characterization of supports and membrane phases was carried out in order to determine factors influencing wetting process. Experimental method based on capillary rise is widely used for porous media characterization (i.e. pore radius, contact angle). Measurements of penetration distance or liquid mass are two main experimental methods, in which the Washburn equation is a basic instrument to analyze the obtained results. However, polymeric porous supports do not meet Washburn assumptions and the method is loaded with human errors, so the sessile drop method was used. The rate of wetting influences swelling effects and therefore changes in permeation path during gas separation processes are observed. Influence of ionic liquids structure on wetting and swelling of porous supports was investigated. The families of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (Cnmim), ammonium (Nnnnn), 1-alkyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium (CnPyrr) and 1-alkylpyridinium (CnPy) compounds with variable alkyl chain lengths in cation structures and changeable anions were taken into account in wetting and swelling experiments.

Opis:
Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) has garnered much attention, for its simple operation and high selectivity for the target solute. For an ELM process to be successful, emulsion stability and formulation of liquid membrane are the two main criteria. This study investigated an ELM formulation to identify a suitable green surfactant over the ordinary ones to reduce the utilization of chemicals. The stability of water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) was assessed in the following ways, by altering the concentrations of the egg yolk and NaOH, homogenizer speed, and emulsification time. To ascertain the favorable conditions for phenol extraction, several experiments were performed, adopting the batch process, which included many parameters, like the influence exerted by the pH of the external feed, concentration of surfactant, concentration of the internal phase, time of emulsification, homogenization speed and mixing time. Lower breakage and greater extraction efficiency (0.83% and 82.06%, respectively) were attained at 3.5 pH of the external feed, 4% (v/v) of the surfactant, 0.1 M of NaOH, 7 min of emulsification time, 5800 rpm of homogenizer speed and 3 minutes of mixing time. From the results of this study, egg yolk emerged as a good green surfactant. Thus, the ELM process holds promise as an effective technology for stripping phenol from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
The present work describes the application of Supported Liquid Membrane (SLM) technology towards the removal and recovery of a cationic dye (Methylene Blue) from aqueous solutions. Natural and non-toxic vegetable oils have been impregnated on microporous polymeric films of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to constitute a liquid membrane. Different parameters affecting the transport, like pH of feed solution, acid concentration in the strip solution, initial dye concentration, oil types and stirring speeds have been investigated. Highest value of flux (1.7 x 10–5 mg/cm2/sec1) for methylene blue dye was achieved with sunflower oil impregnated on the PVDF support, with pH maintained at 12 in the feed solution and 0.3 M hydrochloric acid concentration in the strip solution. It took 6 hours to transport maximum amount of dye under optimum conditions.

Opis:
The oscillatory behaviour of a nitrobenzene liquid membrane oscillator containing benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium chloride was investigated in order to recognize the oscillation mechanism. The influence of temperature and electrode distances from the interfaces as well as the donor, membrane and acceptor phase composition on the changes of electric potential difference between aqueous phases was examined. The effect of the surfactant structure on the oscillation characteristics was discussed. It was shown that the appearance of oscillations requires the simultaneous presence of surfactant, picric acid and ethanol in the system. The mechanism of oscillations in this system should be similar as the one in an oscillator containing hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide where oscillations of electric potential difference between the two aqueous phases are produced by sudden adsorption and desorption of the surfactant and the ionic pair: a surfactant-picric anion at the a/m interface. The diffusion fluxes of all these species in the vicinity of a/m interface also play an important role. They might couple, which leads to the nonlinear behaviour of the system. The oscillation curves obtained for the liquid membrane oscillator with benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium chloride and different taste substances were analyzed by the construction of the corresponding attractors in two-dimensional space using the time delay method. Each system has its own attractor differing in shape and surface. Therefore, these properties might be used for identifying an unknown taste substance present in the acceptor phase.

Opis:
Oscillations of electrochemical potential difference between donor and acceptor aqueous phases of nitrobenzene oscillator containing hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were observed. It was shown that this potential difference is composed of two–phase boundary potentials between a membrane and an appropriate aqueous phase. It appears that oscillations occur at an aqueous acceptor/membrane interface. They are caused by adsorption/desorption processes of surfactant ions pairs with bromide or picrate followed by their transfer to the acceptor phase. The processes taking part in three stages of oscillation mechanism were suggested.

Opis:
In this research, a flat sheet supported liquid membrane (FSSLM) system was used to transfer germanium from the acidic medium. The poly-tetra fluoro ethylene (PTFE) membrane filter with the hydrophobic nature and Cyanex 301 were selected as the support and the mobile carrier, respectively. The influence of various parameters being pH of the feed solution (1.5-5), germanium concentration (10-40 mg/dm3), carrier concentration in the solid membrane (10-40 vol%), and sulfuric acid concentration of the receiving phase (100-400 g/dm3) was investigated on the transport of germanium. Under the optimum condition being pH of 1.5, the germanium concentration of 40 mg/dm3, the carrier concentration of 1.18 mol/dm3, and the sulfuric acid concentration of 400 g/dm3, a mass transfer model was developed. Based on this model, the transport mechanism, diffusion of species to the feed-membrane interface, the chemical reaction of species and Cyanex 301, and diffusion of germanium-Cyanex 301 complexes across SLM were explained. According to the obtained model, the values of 6.57 and 738.6 s/cm were achieved for the aqueous and organic diffusion resistances, respectively.

Opis:
The current paper focuses on assessing key parameters affecting the extraction of Chlorpyrifos as well as emulsion stability using the emulsion liquid membrane technology. Five parameters affecting the extraction have been studied: homogenizer speed, emulsification time, agitating time, surfactant concentration, and stripping phase concentration taking into consideration the emulsion breaking. Experiments proved that using the resulting optimum values will maximize both extraction and stripping efficiencies (93.8% and 94.7% respectively), while minimizing the emulsion breakage (increasing the stability of emulsion) to 0.73% with no need to employ a carrier agent. A 10 min agitating time, 3% (v/v) Span 80 as a surfactant, 12700-rpm homogenizer speed, 0.25 M HCl as an internal phase concentration, and 5 min emulsification time are chosen to be the optimum parameters’ values. A study of extraction kinetics and estimation of mass transfer coefficient was also accomplished (3.89×10-9m/s). The conclusions of this work can be extended to the removal of other types of pesticides from water.

Opis:
Zbadano zjawisko powstawania wody w membranie ciekłej zawierającej D2EHPA oraz CYANEX272 w roli przenośników jonów. W układzie zachodzi micelizacja cząsteczek D2EHPA, a w powstających agregatach tworzą się przestrzenie/kanały transportowe umożliwiające przepływ jonów Cr(III). CYANEX 272 nie tworzy tak rozbudowanych struktur. Opisany mechanizm transportu stanowić będzie podstawę teoretyczną do opracowania modelu matematycznego dla transportu jonów Cr(III) w badanym układzie z SLM.
A phenomenon of water formation in the liquid membrane containing D2EHPA and CYANEX272 as ions carriers was investigated in the paper Micellization of the D2EHPA particles occurs in the system. Transportation spaces/channels are formed inside created aggregates allowing the flow c Cr(III) ions. CYANEX 272 does not create such large structures. This transportation mechanism should provide a theoretical basis for the mathematical model of Cr (III) transportation in the system studied.
