Opis:
Our aims were to analyze the relationship between the duration of psychosis (DUP) and short- and long-term outcomes of treatment, and to determine the cut-off point between short and long DUP at which differences in treatment outcomes are most significant. We assessed 80 participants with schizophrenia at the point of their first hospitalization. Fifty participated in all four follow-ups over 20 years. DUP was divided into short (up to 6 months) and long (over 6 months). ANOVA and Chi-square tests were employed to identify significant differences in both clinical and social indicators of functioning. ROC curves were used to estimate the best DUP division point. Significant differences favoring the short-DUP group were found for: GAF, total severity of symptoms and severity of positive symptoms, social functioning measured according to DSM-III criteria, employment, and social contacts. The optimal cut-off point for DUP was the 23rd week. We concluded that: (1) the relationship between longer DUP and worse overall treatment outcomes was sustained throughout the 20 years, (2) a positive correlation between DUP and the severity of psychopathological symptoms was observed over the first 12 years of illness, (3) the results indicate the efficacy of early therapeutic interventions in psychosis.

Opis:
In the Masurian Lakeland a medium size catchment basin of the Jorka river-lake system (about 65 km2) was studied intensively in 1996-1998 (April-October) and compared with the data from the late 1970s. Nutrients (TP, TKN, N-NO3) and chlorides were monitored in 15 short lakeshore streams draining small subcatchments that differed in land use. The annual and monthly concentration values of nutrients were measured as well as the annual load in kg ha-1 year-1. The data indicate that in a mosaic, hilly region the export rates from the diversified small catchments of both TP and TN tend to be low, lower than in other, non-mosaic areas; the values of export rates are mainly dependent on the discharge in the subcatchments; that is why the values for 1998 and/or 1997 were usually lower than for other years. There is a tendency to lower concentration for nutrients (including chlorides) and export rates in the subcatchments objected to low impact of agriculture (forest, wetland) than in the subcatchments dominated by cropland. Extremely high values were found for a few catchments with cropland, additionally polluted by sewage disposal in the vicinity.

During 9 years of studies very regular Chironomus population dynamics was stated in a eutrophic, lowland dam reservoir. There were usually two peaks of the abundance: the higher one at spring (up to 80 thousands ind. m-2) and the much lower in autumn. The duration of the spring Chironomus generation was about 3 weeks. The constant presence of young larvae during the summer did not result in the high total abundance of larvae, mainly due to the strong predation of fish and swallows on various stages of Chironomus. The smaller predators pressure in the spring (due to fish breeding) and in the autumn (due to lower temperatures) resulted in the mentioned two peaks. The spring peak abundance was positively correlated with the chlorophyll concentration in water (feeding resource for larvae) and negatively with the water flow. There was also negative correlation of the water flow and the chlorophyll concentration, as well as abundance of Chironomus and Tubificidae during the vegetation season (April-October). Tubificidae correlated strongly positively with the spring Chironomus numbers (with a month lag). The slight positive correlation of these benthic components abundance occurred for the whole vegetation season. Tubificidae occurred in generally high numbers up to 400 thousands m-2, but various in different years, and with no regular changes during the season.

Opis:
The nutrient (TP, N-NO3, TKN - Kjeldhal nitrogen) loading to lakes (from river, precipitation, direct catchment) and in-lake retention were calculated for five successive lakes of the river-lake system typical of the mosaic, hilly lakeland region (the Jorka system, Masurian Lakeland). The annual values of loading for TP and TN were mostly not higher than 1.0 and 15.0 g m-2 lake area, respectively and rather low compared to other river-lake systems in the lakeland region. However, these values as well as nutrient in-lake retention decreased in 1997-1998 (warm and dry years) compared with 1978 and 1996, together with the decrease in discharge and exchange rate of lake water. In selected cases the retention of TP and TKN became negative which means that the lake functioned as the source of nutrients for downstream fragments of the system. The retention of nitrate-nitrogen was usually positive - lakes remained effective sites for its removal (denitrification). The possible changes in functioning of small catchments and chains of shallow, eutrophic lakes under the conditions of global warming are discussed.

The 2000–2004 results of the mapping technique censuses carried out in permanent plots situated in three types of old-growth primeval BNP stands (ash-alder riverine, oak-hornbeam, mixed coniferous) are presented and compared with data gathered in the same plots in the late 1990s. These data supplement earlier observations in the BNP and extend the long-term set of data on the breeding bird numbers there to a 30-year uninterrupted series (1975–2004). Most community parameters, such as the composition of breeding avifauna, the species richness, and the make-up and cumulative share of dominants, have remained basically unchanged. The overall bird density has increased by 8–20% in different plots; in 2001 it reached the highest level within the 30-year study period. The increase was due to parallel increases in numbers of several species, widely differing in their nesting sites, food requirements and migratory habits — during this period 14 of the 26 most numerous species attained their highest numbers in the 30-year study period. Since numbers increased simultaneously in all the plots, the density differences across habitats remained the same, from the highest densities in riverine stands at the forest edge (up to 149 p/10 ha), through oak-hornbeam stands, to the lowest densities in the coniferous stands (54–56 p/10 ha). In most cases the numerical increases could not be attributed to changes in local environmental factors, such as food resources, or to detectable changes in habitat structure. The apparent lack of a relationship between the changes in bird numbers and the local situation suggests that factors acting on a larger scale (beyond the study area) could have been involved. Despite the directional changes in bird abundance observed in the Białowieża Forest, its breeding bird assemblage, when compared with the amplitude of changes recorded over the same period in other areas and habitats, stands out as an example of remarkable stability.

Opis:
The secondary succession pattern observed on an arable field abandoned since 1974 in Tilio-Carpinetum habitat is described and disscussed. Results obtained during 36 years of study confirm that succession on an abandoned field leads from a typical segetal community to the formation of a juvenile treestand composed of pioneer species. Our study supports the view that succession is a process which is largely dependent on the initial conditions and surrounding vegetation. The results indicate that some species can modify the course of this process, accelerating or slowing it down. Limitations of the method and prognosis of future vegetation development are also discussed.

Opis:
Two fundamental demographic processes (tree recruitment and mortality) are analyzed for forest stands growing on permanent study plots located in strictly protected Scots pine−dominated, old−growth stands of Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The major implications of the observed demographic trends for the general shape of tree size distributions are determined, as well. During the past ca 30 years, in the stands sampled, there was a pronounced lack of balance between mortality and recruitment processes. Mortality rate was eight times higher than recruitment rate. Eventually, there was a net significant decline in population density, observed for all major tree species, including Scots pine, pedunculate oak, silver and downy birch, and black alder. As mortality processes affected mainly smaller trees, there was also a significant deterioration of the general demographic status of most important tree species. This effect was shown by the change of the overall shape of diameter distributions over the study period: from reverse J−shaped to flat curves running nearly parallel to X−axis. The values of recruitment rates were markedly lower, and the values of mortality rates – significantly higher, than analogous values characterizing comparable forests (e.g., those obtained for the natural stands of Białowieża National Park). Low recruitment rates, as obtained for Kampinos stands, suggest that presently, in the local, Scots pine−dominated, old−growth stands, the general conditions for forest regeneration and for maintaining a long−term demographic stability are unfavorable. Most probably, the regeneration of this type of forest has an episodic, ‘wave−like’ character and corresponds to the ‘catastrophic’ model, according to which the successful regeneration of current dominants (especially Scots pine, silver and downy birch, black alder) must be preceded by a stand−initiating (stand−replacing) disturbance, leading to total or partial, but heavy, destruction of the currently existing stand. At the moment, it would be difficult to predict, however, if and when such a disturbance will affect the stands under investigation. Thus, we predict that in the nearest future at least, the state of overall demographic unbalance will continue or even increase.

Opis:
This report presents the results and analysis of long-term properties of fiber-reinforced cement composite based on waste aggregate. The long-term tests were carried out on the stand proposed by the authors for simultaneously testing three beams with dimensions of 100x200x2900 mm. A total of 8 mixtures of cement composites with aggregate from ceramic waste and waste sand were tested. Three beams were made for each mixture. One without dispersed reinforcement and two with 0.5% and 1.0% fiber reinforcement ratios. As dispersed reinforcement, steel cord and hooked steel fibers were used. The beams were subjected to a four-point bending test. The research was carried out for 1000 days. An optical system was used as an innovative solution in long-term research. Based on the measurements, the creep coefficient in the mid-span of the beams was determined, and the crackings of the beams were analysed. The results obtained using manual measuring devices and the optical system were compared. A good convergence of measurement methods was observed. During the analysis of the results, the coefficients modifying the method for calculating the crack width included in Eurocode 2 were determined.
