Opis:
Although longitudinal studies are common in other disciplines, such as psychology, medicine, or User Experience, they are rarely used in Quality of Experience (QoE). However, observing users over time can provide useful information on the QoE and help to better understand its influencing factors. Here, we present a systematic review of the methodologies of longitudinal studies in the QoE domain. We review papers selected through a systematic search and discuss various aspects of described studies, such as methods of gathering subjective assessment or length of the studies. Our work recognizes common practices that can be used to reproduce and extend the proposed long-term study designs. Additionally, based on our review, we propose future work directions for the longitudinal QoE studies.

Opis:
Cerebral stroke is the very common cause of executive dysfunctions, such as disinhibition and inability to switch of attention. The aim of this longitudinal study was to determine a clinical characteristic of executive dysfunctions in light of the neuropsychological examinations. Forty-four patients who had ischemic stroke were examined twice with a twelve-month interval. At each session executive functions were measured on the same patients. Executive functioning was measured by three popular tasks, i.e. an experimental version of the Stroop Color- Word Interference Test, Verbal Fluency Test, and Trail Making Test. Twenty-five healthy volunteers were examined once only to transform patients’ results of neuropsychological testing into standardized form. Executive impairment was found in 24 patients (i.e. 65% of the clinical group), who failed to complete at least one of the three tests. Patients manifested executive dysfunctions which were highly heterogeneous with respect to character, severity and their prevalence. Overall, there was clear evidence that executive functions showed substantial recovery. Timecourse of distinct executive dysfunctions was similar.

Opis:
There were many studies on treatment and prophylaxis of PTSD. It was assumed that a need of talking about of the traumatic event has been a factor moderating relationship between exposure to traumatic event and PTSD symptoms development. Aim of the study was to test this assumption. The study was conducted on police officers according longitudinal procedure, it means that the study was performed in two stages with one year break. It was a possibility to make an analysis of obtained results as if it were two studies; cross-sectional and longitudinal ones. Each analysis let us draw opposing conclusions. Need of talking about traumatic event appeared to be a resistance factor in former one and a sensibilizing factor in letter one.

Math anxiety and math achievement in primary school children : longitudinal relationship and predictors

Opis:
Background: Math anxiety (MA) and math achievement (MATH) are related, but the direction of their relationship and their predictors are still unclear. Aims: We tested whether MATH predicts MA (Deficit Theory), MA predicts MATH (Debilitating Anxiety Theory), or whether MA and MATH have reciprocal relationships (Reciprocal Theory). Further, we established whether MA at T0, T1, and T2 and MATH at T1 and T2 were predicted by gender, general anxiety, fluid intelligence, verbal and visuospatial working memory, and symbolic and non-symbolic numerical representations tested at T0. Sample: We tested 337 Polish primary school children. Methods: We analyzed longitudinal data at three time points: T0 – the beginning of the first grade, T1 – the end of the first grade, T2 – the end of the second grade. Results: MATH at T1 predicted MA at T2 and MA at T1 predicted MATH at T2 (supporting the Reciprocal Theory). Additionally, MATH at T1 was predicted by fluid intelligence, visuospatial working memory, and symbolic numerical representation; MATH at T2 by fluid intelligence, verbal working memory, and MATH at T1. MA at T0 was predicted by general anxiety and symbolic numerical representation, MA at T1 by MA at T0 and gender, and MA at T2 by MA at T1. Conclusions: The results support the Reciprocal Theory of the MA and MATH relationship. MA is predicted by general anxiety, knowledge of mathematical symbols and gender. MATH is predicted by fluid intelligence, working memory and knowledge of mathematical symbols.

Opis:
Objective: There are two theories (by Horowitz and by Foa) which attempt at explaining the process of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development by information dissonance. The purpose of the present study was to verify these theories via cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Materials and Methods: The study based on a cross-sectional design was performed on a representative group of Polish firefighters. The study using a longitudinal protocol was conducted among police officers. The level of PTSD was assessed using the Questionnaire for PTSD Measurement (K-PTSD). The sense of coherence (SOC) was measured with the Polish adaptation of the Orientation to Life Questionnaire by A. Antonovsky. Results: In the cross-sectional study, the correlation coefficients between K-PTSD and SOC were –0.35 (p < 0.001) in the group of firefighters and –0.47 (p < 0.001) in that of police officers. In the longitudinal study, the relationship between SOC and PTSD symptoms appeared to be curvilinear and had the U-letter shape. Therefore, we used ANOVA for statistical analysis. Unfortunately, the F(2.31) = 1.900 and p > 0.05 indicated that the tendency we observed was not statistically significant. Conclusions: We would like to propose two possible explanations for the difference in the relationships between SOC and PTSD symptoms obtained in the studies employing the cross-sectional and the longitudinal protocols.

Opis:
This article explores the dynamics of personal relationships within a geographically mobile, large peer group (PG) over time. Based on a case-study of a PG examined within the broader Qualitative Longitudinal Study (QLS) on ‘Peer Groups & Migration’ in Poland, the analysis focuses on the transformations of friendships from early adolescence to adulthood. The paper sheds light on friendship relationships and gauges strength of bonds over fifteen years from a spatial perspective. By specifically examining three critical moments of the PG formation (ca. age 15), leaving home (ca. 18–19), and the current transition to mid-adulthood (ca. 27–29), a retrospective and temporally dynamic portrait of friendships continuously affected by mobility is proposed. We demonstrate the entanglement of youth friendships in space (mobility) and time, arguing that a rise of transnationalism did not alleviate the preference for having one’s friends in close spatial proximity.

Opis:
Introduction Several theories have emerged in recent years suggesting that neuroendocrinological alterations, mainly changes in cortisol, could be of importance with respect to the link between chronic stress and disease. This study investigated possible deviations in the diurnal cortisol profiles of patients with clinically diagnosed stress-related exhaustion (exhaustion disorder – ED) compared with healthy controls. Material and methods: Salivary cortisol samples taken at home in the morning directly after waking up, 30 min later, and in the evening were compared between ED patients (N = 122; 25% men) and healthy controls (N = 98; 44% men). Follow-up measurements were performed after 6 months (79 patients) and 12 months (68 patients) of the treatment. Results: There were no clear differences in diurnal salivary cortisol profiles between the patients and healthy controls. Moreover, salivary cortisol levels and diurnal profiles did not change significantly during the treatment in the patient group. There was some indication of a smaller cortisol awakening response in the male patients compared to the male controls, but the difference appeared to be mainly related to the antidepressant use. Conclusions: Diurnal salivary cortisol profiles, at least as measured in this study, give a rather poor reflection of the prolonged stress exposure experienced by patients with ED. Such basal salivary cortisol measurements do not seem suitable as biomarkers for stress-related conditions such as ED or burnout, or as an aid to assess the effects of prolonged stress load in a routine clinical practice.
