Opis:
Lysimeters represent the ideal tool for direct measurement of soil water balance components in soil profiles. Changes in the water content in a soil monolith can be measured with sufficient accuracy by the precise lysimeter weighing system. Water content changes in soil monolith as derived from lysimeter mass represent one of the basic water balance component. This paper deals with the development and comparison of individual soil water balance components in two different soil profiles from the Easter-Slovakian-Lowland. Two lysimeter vessels were filled monolithically with two different soil profiles covered with grass: one sandy soil profile from locality Poľany and one silty-loam soil profile from locality Vysoká nad Uhom. A constant groundwater level of 1 m below ground level was maintained in both soil profiles. Under the same meteorological conditions, all differences in the development of water balance components were caused only by the differences in soil profiles. The actual evapotranspiration and water flows at the bottom of the soil profiles were compared. Sandy soils are generally considered to be more prone to drought than silty-loam soils. Under the specific conditions of this experiment (maintaining a constant groundwater level) the opposite was shown, when the silty-loam soil profile was more prone to drought than sandy soil profile. Sandy soil profile from Poľany reacted more quickly to precipitation (or evaporation). Due to the higher hydraulic conductivity of the sandy soil compared to the silty-loamy soil, the groundwater level response to external stimuli was much faster.

Opis:
The usefulness of estimating hourly reference evapotranspiration for assessing the water requirements of plants over a 24-hour period was determined in the study. The values of hourly (ET0,h) and daily (ET0,d) evapotranspiration were calculated using the Penman-Monteith (PM) model. The daily ET0 was calculated automatically by the meteorological station, and the evapotranspiration values for individual hours were calculated using spreadsheet software. To verify the values of evapotranspiration calculated with these two approaches in relation to the actual water needs of grass, lysimetric measurements were performed. Additionally, substrate moisture content and temperature were measured using capacitance probes. The values of evapotranspiration estimated with the hourly PM model were higher than those determined with the daily model. An accuracy of the hourly model in relation to the data measured with a weighing lysimeter depended largely on the quality of the reproduction of meteorological parameters at the site of the crop. Observed underestimation of the actual daily evapotranspiration was presumably due to the use of air temperature values in the calculations (measured at a height of 2 m by the weather station). During strong solar radiation the air temperature was much lower than the temperature of the upper layer of the substrate in the weighing lysimeter. Reference evapotranspiration was recalculated by introducing into the hourly PM model the measured values of substrate temperature. After taking into consideration the higher temperatures, the calculated values of evapotranspiration increased, and the regression model took the form: y = 1.01x + 0.014 (R2 = 0.90), which proves the proportionality of the calculated and measured (actual water needs determined with the weighing lysimeter) data. Reliable data on the hourly variations in evapotranspiration over a 24-hour period can be a great tool for use in controlling the irrigation of plants grown in a limited volume of substrate.

Opis:
In this paper the rate migration of trace metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn) in polluted turf-podzol sandy loam soil was investigated in lysimetric experiment. Koller’s model was applied to obtain the ranking of the metals according to their rate of migration in soil to seepage water. Among the studied metals, the most intense migrant in the soil to seepage water was lead. Lead had highest and earliest maximum concentration in seepage water. Cooper had weak migration intensity. According to metals migration ability, they can be ranked in the following descending order: Pb > Cd > Zn > Cu. Findings are relevant to assessing the metal as dangerous.

Opis:
The suitability of capacitance probes for measuring the actual variations in substrate water content in container-grown ornamental species (Lawson cypress) was examined. The probes were installed in the plant containers. Weighing measurement data on water loss was used to assess the actual changes in substrate water content (plant water use). In an additional test, an evaluation of temperature sensitivity of the capacitance probe was performed under laboratory conditions. The probe was placed in a container containing the growing medium (peat substrate) with a defined (stable) moisture content. The substrate temperature was modified and the changes in probe output were recorded. The experiment demonstrated the existence of the effect of temperature on the quality of soil moisture measurements conducted with the capacitance method. The accuracy of the results obtained from measurements with dielectric sensors in relation to the data obtained by means of weighing platforms depended largely on the temperature profile of the measured medium. It was demonstrated that temperature variations explained 99% of the observed differences in the results of moisture content measured with the capacitance method. Due to the fact that there is no possibility of developing universal factors (for different sensors and substrates) for correcting the influence of temperature, this relationship should be defined independently for a given type of crop and the measuring system available.

Opis:
Investigations on experimental simulations of an aerobic landfill at different variants of aeration and anaerobic landfill are presented in the paper. Additionally, the composition of leachate and formed gas was monitored after finishing the aeration of aerobic lysimeters. It follows from the investigations that a decrease of the waste aeration rate causes a reduction of gas emission after completion of the aeration process as compared to the meter aerated in a continuous way.

Opis:
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate soil evaporation in arid regions using a minimal set of readily accessible parameters, which are represented through a nomogram. This work explores the relationships between soil evaporation, soil water deficit, and air temperature. Evaporation is a critical factor influencing the soil water regime. Irrigation artificially adjusts soil moisture to maintain it within optimal limits for vegetation. This regulation can only be effectively managed if the principles of soil-water balance are thoroughly understood. In arid and semi-arid regions, where water quality is often poor (high salinity), prolonged excessive irrigation can lead to soil salinization, thereby reducing agricultural productivity. In this study, ten lysimeters were used to measure soil evaporation at different levels of soil water saturation. The highest evaporation rate was recorded in fully saturated soil, peaking at 548 mm. This rate decreased as the soil water saturation decreased. Therefore, a good knowledge of the evaporation value is necessary to establish appropriate irrigation and soil leaching rates and consequently, an adequate water balance.

Opis:
Field research on effective infiltration has been carried out in the Sowie Mountains area in the Sudetes Mountains (SW Poland) in a lysimeter installed 0.9 m below the surface of the ground in a forest. The annual rainfall in 2011 has been measured in the range 520.9–644.8 mm for the three station, while the average precipitation of the long term observation indicate 880 mm. Air temperature was 2°C higher during experiment period from the typical to the region. During annual study (from April 2011 to May 2012) it has been measured effective infiltration volume as 78.1 mm of water in comparison total precipitation of 596.7 mm in nearest station. Groundwater recharge by infiltration is changing during the year as well as in longer period, occurs mainly in cool season (spring, autumn) and indicate impulsive nature. The highest rate was reported in the October-November period, infiltration has exceeded the 30% of the precipitation, what could be explained by the high degree of saturation of the aeration zone. The departure value recorded in the summer relates to the degree of saturation of the aeration zone and there is high rainfall of the order of 200 mm. Then at the turn of July and August there has been measured a 54 mm percolating water. However, in August and September when rainfall over 107 mm water percolation was only 0.5 mm. Recharge and water supply in summer precipitation requires an initialization precipitation value order of 30–50 mm to supplement the state of moisture contains and high transpiration of plants. Infiltrating water showed of nitrate-sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium-sodium chemical type. In the process of infiltration increase of total dissolved solids almost twice has been measured.Water are enriched in the ions+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl–, NO3–, SO42– is observed while the reduction of the concentration of HCO3–and NH4+. Chemical water composition is quite similar to the water in the stream located close to the lisymeter point.

Opis:
The characteristics of Polish rural agglomerations indicate that only 32% of these areas are villages typified by compact buildings where the use of a collective sewage system is economically justified. In other areas, it is necessary to apply solutions that allow for the sewage utilization in place of their creation and safe discharge into the environment, e.g. in the form of home systems based on biological processes, e.g. in soil-plant systems. The purpose of the work was to determine the soil-plant efficiency of wastewater treatment with the use of so-called energy plants. The experiment was conducted in 2012–2014 in lysimeters at a depth of 130 cm and 100 cm in diameter. These were submerged in the ground, filled with sand clay and equipped with installations enabling the drainage of gravity water in the form of lysimeter effluents. Two species of plants were used: Miscanthu giganteus and Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby. They were irrigated with pretreated domestic sewage (variant I – 1200 mm year−1 and variant II – 1600 mm year−1). For irrigation, sewage from a group of buildings inhabited by six families was used. Raw domestic sewage was discharged into the tank, consisting of four chambers, which constituted a relatively good level of pre-cleaning. For the irrigation of plants in the experiment, pre-treated sewage was used. In order to determine the effectiveness of wastewater treatment in the soil-plant environment, the concentrations of the following components were determined in the effluents: TSS, BOD5, COD, Ntot. The quantities of pollutants contained in the sewage were characterized by considerable variability, especially in relation to COD (390.6– 1583.0 mg O2 dm−3) and Ntot (47.0–250.2 mg N dm−3).
