Opis:: In this work obtaining of magnesium hydroxide from the solutions obtained during magnesium removal from zinc concentrates is presented. The received product was used for the winning of composites from polyethylene (PE) using extrusion and injection methods. The obtained composites were tested in terms of thermal stability (TG, DTG) as well as combustibility (LOI and thermovision camera). The preliminary results indicate the beneficial effect of the decrease of PE quality by magnesium hydroxide obtained by means of solution purification and precipitation of Mg(OH)2 by means of soda lye.

Opis:: With the rapid development of the polymer materials industry and the improvement of people's environmental awareness, magnesium hydroxide has been widely used in polymer materials due to its high decomposition temperature, non-toxic smoke suppression, and the advantages of neutralizing harmful gases produced by polymer combustion. However, the conventional preparation methods of magnesium hydroxide exhibit several issues, including high hydrophilicity, elevated polarity, and limited compatibility with polymers. This research proposes an improved method by adding sodium stearate and KH560 modifier, controlling the rate of magnesium oxide and preparing magnesium hydroxide flame retardants using a modifier-directed hydration method. Various characterizations confirmed its morphology, particle size and structure. The magnesium hydroxide exhibits low polarity, small particle size, stable structure and excellent hydrophobicity (with a contact angle of 120.32°, and a free energy of 1.34mN/m). In parallel, the magnesium hydroxide/polypropylene composites demonstrate excellent flame retardancy (LOI of 25%, V-1 grade) and simultaneously enhance the dispersion of magnesium hydroxide within the polypropylene matrix, improving the material's toughness and strength.

Opis:: In this study, hydration behavior of the magnesia waste, supplied from the electrostatic bag house of the sintering unit of MAS Company, Eskisehir-Turkey was studied to find out re-usability of the material as a source of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) production. According to chemical and crystalline phase analyses, MgO content of the sample was determined as 49.9 wt% and consists of mainly raw magnesite (MgCO3), sintered magnesia-periclase (MgO) and small amount of serpentine (lizardite) phases. In hydration process, the reactivity of magnesium oxide determines the rate and extent of hydration of the sample. Therefore, the waste samples both calcined and uncalcined forms were hydrated in water and the efficiencies were compared according to sample source. The hydration experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 30 C and 80 C to evaluate the influence of temperature on particle morphology and surface areas of the products. The efficiency of the hydration was evaluated by using thermogravimetric (TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The test results suggest that the magnesia waste could be used as a source material for production of magnesium hydroxide.

Opis:: The work presents the impact of reagents concentration and the drying process on the efficiency of obtaining magnesium hydroxide and its specific surface area. Magnesium sulphate(VI) within the concentration range of 0.7–2.0 mol/dm³ was used in the research as magnesium feedstock and sodium hydroxide was used as a precipitating agent within the same concentration range. The process of obtaining magnesium hydroxide was carried out with a 25% excess of the precipitating agent in relation to the reaction stoichiometry. The obtained suspension was separated by way of multi-stage sedimentation with the use of acetone and freezing samples. Depending on the concentration of reagents the efficiency of obtaining magnesium hydroxide fell within the range of 88–99%, whereas the specific surface area – within 115–609 m² /g, while the high purity of samples above 99% of magnesium hydroxide was maintained.

Opis:: The method for the synthesis of either unmodified magnesium hydroxide or functionalised with poly(ethylene glycols) of different molecular weights and physicochemical properties of the products are presented. Magnesium hydroxide was obtained by the precipitation method under well defined conditions from ammonia solution and different magnesium salts. Dispersive properties of the products were characterised by polydispersity index, particle size, as well as SEM images. Crystalline structure of magnesium hydroxide samples were determined by the WAXS method. To confirm the presence of functional groups introduced by appropriate modifiers the samples were subjected to spectroscopic analysis. Electrokinetic stability of the studied samples was determined on the basis of zeta potential dependence vs. pH measurements. The modification has resulted in reduction of particle diameters in some Mg(OH)2 samples.

Opis:: This paper presents the initial results of efforts to obtain high-purity magnesium hydroxide with micro or nano-structure from technical raw materials. Magnesium hydroxide can be used in the plastic industry as a flame retardant additive. Mg(OH)₂ should be characterized by high surface area (above 100 m²/g), high disintegration, and high purity. In the research, technical magnesium sulfate was used which was purified by hydrolytic methods before obtaining the magnesium hydroxide. Heptahydrate, the specific raw material for magnesium hydroxide synthesis, was crystallized from purified solutions. The study was conducted for magnesium sulfate concentration in an interval of 0.2–2.0 mol/dm³ and a sodium hydroxide interval of 0.4–0.5 mol/dm³. The precipitate was analyzed by the SEM method and BET, and its purity was tested using the colorimetric technique.
W pracy przedstawiono wstępne wyniki otrzymywania wodorotlenku magnezu o wysokiej czystości i mikro- lub nanostrukturze na bazie surowców technicznych. Wodorotlenek magnezu może znaleźć potencjalne zastosowanie w przemyśle tworzyw sztucznych jako dodatek opóźniający zapłon. Musi cechować się wysoką powierzchnią właściwą (powyżej 100 m²/g), silnym rozdrobnieniem oraz wysoką czystością. W badaniach stosowano techniczny siarczan magnezu, który przed procesem otrzymywania wodorotlenku magnezu oczyszczano z zastosowaniem metod hydrolitycznych. Z oczyszczonych roztworów krystalizowano sól siedmiowodną, która była surowcem do otrzymywania wodorotlenku magnezu. Badania prowadzono dla różnych stężeń siarczanu magnezu 0,2–2,0 mol/dm³, jako czynnik strącający stosowano wodorotlenek sodu w przedziale stężeń 0,4–0,5 mol/dm³. Otrzymany osad analizowano przy użyciu technik SEM oraz BET, czystość określano technikami kolorymetrycznymi.

Opis:: Synthesis of magnesium hydroxide was performed by the precipitation method with the use of magnesium sulfate and sodium hydroxide. The infiuence of temperature and ratio of reagents was studied. Magnesium hydroxides, and the magnesium oxides obtained from them by thermal decomposition, were analyzed to determine their bulk density, polydispersity and particle size. The magnesium oxide with the largest surface area was tested as a catalyst in the oxyethylation of lauryl alcohol, and shown to be selective but poorly reactive in comparison with commercially available catalysts. Further studies are needed to improve its reactivity.

Opis:: An attempt was made to synthesise magnesium oxide of a high degree of dispersion permitting its use as adsorbent or catalyst. The synthesis method proposed was precipitation with the use of magnesium nitrate or magnesium sulfate. The influence of temperature, the mode and the rate of dosing, the concentration and the ratio of the reagents on the properties of the final product was analysed. Magnesium oxides were obtained by thermal decomposition of magnesium hydroxides and subjected to thorough analysis. The results permitted selection of the reaction systems ensuring synthesis of the final products of the desired properties.

Opis:: The article addresses the very important issue of enriching the products with additives improving the fire resistance properties. For this purpose, hydroxide additives (aluminium and magnesium) were used, which decompose at increased temperature to form water. When designing the experiments, one of the Experimental Design Methods (DOE) was used: 2k factorial design for two independent varia-bles. The enriched coatings were tested in accordance with the requirements of PN-EN 45545-2, incl. Intensity of heat release, lateral propagation of flame on products in vertical configuration, or testing of generated fumes and gases. Mechanical properties such as cohesion and impact toughness were also tested. The effectiveness of this type of additives was assessed, as well as their synergistic effect (due to the different decomposition temperature).
