Opis:: This paper examines the notional and pragmatic components of the meaning of the Czech phrasemes containing names of fairy-tale creatures. We do not aim for exhaustive evidence of phrasemes from thematic unit Names of fairy-tale creatures, but we are trying to prove on a few concrete examples that phrasemes 1) can solely convey literal meanings (either notional or pragmatic, or both notional and pragmatic), or, 2) in addition to verbatim meaning, they can also acquire figurative and/or transferred meaning (namely notional, or pragmatic, or both national and pragmatic concurently). In this paper, we prove that the traditionally postulated concept of Czech phraseology does not apply, namely that each phrasemes is represented by both (a notional and a pragmatic) component of meaning. On the contrary, it appears that some phraseological units can only be of notional significance, other phrasemes can only have pragmatic significance.

Opis:: In this paper the author is trying to define the notions of semantics and style more accurately, and to establish a connection between them even though at first glance they are incompatible. Semantics as the study of meaning in linguistic terms according to empirical research into the structure and function of signs in natural languages reveals relations between them and the concepts they designate. Thus, in the context of structure, it explores lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, sentential meaning, and with respect to function descriptive meaning and associative meaning. Associative meaning covers several related types of meaning, dominated by the following three: stylistic, expressive and connota- tive. On this semantic plane style and semantics intersect, and partially overlap. Thus style, as the main generator of these three types of meaning, is directly correlated with semantics. Style and semantics are in a causal relationship: style is the cause (the generator of meaning), semantics the effect (the interpreter of meaning).

Opis:: There are three different types of scholarship, primary, secondary, and meta-scholarship. This paper applies a meta-approach to the question of musical meaning, which involves some assessment of where the enterprise as a whole has come from and is heading, its value and external impact. Three aspects of meaning are discussed: referential, functional and socially transformative. Referential meaning refers to our ability to apprehend a musical object as pointing beyond itself. Functional meaning refers to valued personal outcomes that musical engagement engenders. Transformative meaning refers to effects on the wider society. Consultative data from an expert panel is used to frame the discussion. This data shows multiple ways in which recent psychology research has advanced our understanding of how music acquires referential and functional meaning. To date, stronger theoretical clarity has been achieved in the area of referential meaning than in functional meaning. The strongest socially transformative effect of music psychology research has been on the discipline of musicology itself. Weaker, but still significant, effects are found in the wider society, relating to understandings of the benefits of musical engagement, and the acceptance universality of musical capacity as an inherent human attribute.

Opis:: In this contribution I present a meaning list for cognate searches in which meanings are, unlike in similar lists of “basic vocabulary” for the same purpose, organized according to semantic principles. This list is designed to identify possible cognates, which can then be scrutinized more closely in search for hitherto undetected genealogical relationships between languages, in a more effective way. Rather than proposing a completely new set of meanings to be featured, the list combines those most commonly used in extant lists of basic vocabulary such as the Swadesh or the Leipzig/Jakarta List, but introduces several design principles which are jointly able to represent also complex semantic relationships in the context of wordlists.

Opis:: The meaning of emotions and the meaning of words- emotions’ labels are described in studiem about emotions. Although there are some differences between these two domains, most studies about understanding emotions use lexical approach. On the other hand, the nonspecific limits inspired by language can be noticed in the area of changes in emotion meaning. Two studies were conducted and metaheuristic postulates were involved with the aim of breaking these limits. The denotation and emotional complexity were examined/analyzed in the first study. In the second study the atypical connotations taken from the psychology of creativity were used. The outcomes were discussed in relation to abstraction and metaphor as a result it is possible to go beyond literal understanding of emotions and express emotions verbally.

Opis:: This article deals with the epistemological consistency of synonymy. When synonymy is defined as equality of meaning, it turns out to be a factually impossible relation. Therefore, scholars distinguish between full synonymy (ideal concept) and partial synonymy (real phenomenon). We argue that this distinction must be discarded in order to maintain consistency in synonymy. We propose that synonymy does not consist in the absence of different semantic nuances between meanings, but rather in the condition for finding different semantic nuances between meanings. This condition is interpreted as sharing the same “predicative schema” in the sense of Gaston Gross.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, theoretical overview of how proverbs are used as a communicative and discursive strategy, taking into account the speaker’s communicative intention. I will pay attention both to the benefits of the use of this type of formulaic sequence in the construction of the speech, and to the illocutionary force and pragmatic implications entailed by these utterances. In order to do so, some considerations will be required – the encoding of the meaning of the proverbs, the decoding process by the addressee, and the way proverbs are inserted in the discourse. This paper inspects the importance of such factors as the need for articulation of fluent speech, the assumption of cultural patterns, the appeal to proverbiality that aligns the speaker with power structures of the community, or the masking of the speaker’s voice behind a collective entity in order to socialize and release tensions related to interpersonal contact.

Opis:: Das Dokument der Päpstlichen Bibelkommission von 1993 „Die Interpretation der Bibel in der Kirche” widmet im Kapitel II einen Abschnitt dem Sinn der inspirierten Schrift (sens de l’Écriture inspirée), der gewisse Interesse der Bibelwissenschaftler geweckt hat. Im Beitrag wird ausgerechnet die neuste Diskussion besprochen, darunter verschiedene Meinungen und ebenfalls vorgetragene Kritik präsentiert (u.a. Ch. Dohmen, A. Dulles, J.A. Fitzmyer). Der Beitrag wird in vier Abschnitte geteilt: die Namen und Aufteilung der biblischen Sinne (1), der wörtliche Sinn (2), der geistliche Sinn (3), sensus plenior (4) und es wird vom Verfasser gleichfalls eigene Beurteilung des Dokuments gebracht (5). Demnach sind die Ausführungen der Päpstlichen Bibelkommission ein gelungener Versuch einer echt neuen Fragestellung und Fragedarstellung der Noematik, um teilweise das alte (das geistliche) und vor allem das neue (das kritische) in der Exegese zusammenzubringen und zu behalten. Die Diskussion selbst aber ist auf keinem Fall beendet.

Opis:: The aim of this article was to present a Polish adaptation of the Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale (MEMS) developed by George and Park (2017). The scale proposes a tripartite view of meaning in life, measuring it in three different dimensions: Comprehension, Purpose, and Mattering, which is a new interesting approach to the conceptualization of this factor from a broader, existential perspective. The scale testing procedure involved a research sample consisting of 401 participants. In addition to the MEMS scale, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL) were used. The results obtained with the Polish version confirmed its reliability and validity, and the three-factor structure. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was .91 for the entire scale and oscillated between .72 and .89 for the subscales. The Polish MEMS contains 9 items; therefore, it is a short tool which can be successfully used in research on meaning in life.

Hermeneutyka biblijna, opracowana i rozwijana zarówno przez Ojców Kościoła zachodniego, jak i wschodniego, odegrała istotną rolę w tworzeniu ukraińskiej literatury barokowej. Binarna opozycja obrazów światów duchowych i materialnych w systemie hermeneutyki biblijnej ukraińskiej literatury barokowej rozważana jest na przykładzie ukraińskiej i polskiej twórczości takich autorów, jak Łazarz Baranowicz, Innocenty Gizel, Ioannicjusz Galatowski, Stefan Jaworski, Danił Tuptałow, Antoni Radziwiłowski, Hrygoryj Skovoroda i inni, którzy jednogłośnie dochodzą do wniosku, że źródłem ziemskiej pociechy i ziemskiego szczęścia ludzkiego jest wybór Boga i jego Mądrości.
Biblical hermeneutics, compiled and developed by both the Western and Eastern Church Fathers, played an essential role in the formation of Ukrainian baroque literature. The binary opposition of images of the spiritual and material worlds in the system of biblical hermeneutics of Ukrainian baroque literature is considered, based on examples of Ukrainian and Polish works by Lazar Baranovych, Innokenty Gizel, Ioanniki Galyatovsky, Stefan Yavorsky, Danylo Tuptalo, Anthony Radyvilovsky, Gregory Skovoroda and others, who unanimously conclude that the choosing of God and his Wisdom is the source of earthly comfort and human happiness.
