Opis:
The purpose of the research is to analyze the content of Russian and Chinese proverbs, identify stereotypical ideas about a lazy person and compare the data of the two languages. Based on the analysis, the perceptual and inferior meanings of proverbs were identified. Perceptual meanings involve native speakers’ stereotypical representations obtained through observations: “a lazy person stays in bed a lot, sleeps for a long time”; “a lazy person tends to sit around most of the time and move just a little and slowly”; “a lazy person is fond of eating, but hates working”; “a lazy person does nothing with his hands”. It was concluded that the perceptual meanings of Russian and Chinese proverbs generally coincide. The following is referred to as the inferior meanings: “the conclusion about the causal relationship between laziness and a lack of necessary food and a warm shelter”; “generalization – a lazy person neither benefits from it themselves nor brings any benefit to the society”; “conclusion about the causal relationship between work/laziness and human life expectancy”. It was concluded that the inferior meanings differ: Russian proverbs represent the ideathat hard work leads to illness and shortens a person’s life, while Chinese proverbs reflect the stereotype “work prolongs a person’s life, whereas laziness makes people grow old”. Unlike the Chinese language, in which laziness is always categorically disapproved of directly, the Russian language reflects a condescending attitude towards lazy people.

Opis:
The need for an electronic multilingual dictionaryThe paper analyses the issue of providing adequate equivalents in multilingual dictionaries. If equivalents are adequate, it means that: (1) the scope of meaning of one item is identical to its equivalent (cf. drive: drive a nail vs. drive a car); and (2) the collocations of the equivalents overlap. Two significant problems arise when searching for adequate equivalents: the lack of equivalents whose meanings are identical (narrower/wider meanings, partial overlap of meanings, more than equally good equivalent), and equivalents with homographs in a given language. Because such issues are difficult to resolve in a printed dictionary, we put forward some methods of addressing the problems in an electronic dictionary. The paper offers an example entry from such a dictionary, which presents a suggestion of a layout. We also took into consideration the potential problems which may appear if the entry is presented in this manner: first, one must set a limit for the description (a defined number of lexical units); second, one must avoid circularity, but at the same time also strive for an exhaustive description. Electronic dictionaries offer greater possibilities of presenting modern vocabulary and adding new classifiers (e.g. a classifier of politeness).

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns phraseological units with the lexeme bank that can be found in the Polish language. The lexeme bank, which has been present in Polish since the sixteenth century, became the basis for a group of phraseological connections founded on three out of the four meanings of the word registered in dictionaries. More or less typically phraseological expressions were created around the meaning of the word bank as a money trading institution, or as a place where something is kept or stored and finally as a pot or pool in gambling games. The fourth meaning of bank, as an edifice that holds an institution involved in financial turnover, proved to be unattractive phraseologically and did not result in forming any phraseological units. Also it should be emphasized that some of the analyzed phraseological connections undergo semantic modifications in contemporary Polish, which have not yet been recorded in lexicographic collections. It happens so as new shades of meaning of the phrases rozbić bank (hit the jackpot) or trzymać bank (hold the pot) have not yet been fully established in the language and need to be carefully observed.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the phenomenon of profiling and invokes the proposition by Waldemar Czachur (2011) to integrate the Polish school of ethnolinguistics with German discourse linguistics (Diskurslinguistik) in order to investigate the essence of dynamic profiling of meanings and senses. The paper aims to demonstrate further opportunities for such integration. As a point of departure, it uses the definition of profiling by Ronald W. Langacker (1987, 1991, 2009) and attempts to embed it within the paradigms of German text linguistics and discourse linguistics. The categories considered in the paper, undoubtedly subject to the profiling process, include the discourse topic and topics raised in discourse.

The paper contains an analysis of the linguistic processes that have led to the transformation of the term pospolite ruszenie into an idiom. Research shows that the contemporary semantic content of the expression refers to a large extent to the connotations linked to its historic designatum. Terminological uses of the expression are richly documented with quotations in dictionaries, the earliest from which date back to the 16th century. Whereas its idiomatic uses are not noted by any modern dictionary, although they appear frequently in contemporary Polish texts.

In the article there were analyzed etymologically and semantically 37 names of adjectives ‘crafty’ in the Old Polish lexicology. The material was gathered from all available lexicographical sources registering the vocabulary to the end of 19th century. It was evidenced that the formal structures investigated adjectives implied pictures such as: the picture of grasping at something, a picture of efficiency and excellence in particular field, the image of vector of change movement, the picture of phatamorgana, deception of something duplicitous, the figure of something hidden. Moreover the gross of analyzed units found its place in noun-derivation group of actions manifesting – cunningness or created in the ‘noun place’ with figurative sense. The implemented analysis depicted the differences between old Polish and the contemporary Polish language demonstrating itself on the par with lexicology and semantics.

Opis:
The paper analyses categories of every-day reality and of a life-world, reaching also for a related notion of intersubjectivity. Whereas all of them have phenomenological background, only the category of every-day reality has made a career in sociology, breaking offthe connection with its philosophical roots. Its phenomenological interpretations are recurred to in the article, together with showing its relation to Lebenswelt. The main concern is the extent to which it is possible to find religious meanings in every-day life in contemporary societies of the broadly-understood West. A degree to which it is allowed to bring meanings deriving from other spheres into the scope of every-day reality, as well as a concrete symbolic domain to be privileged, are historically and culturally changeable. Secularization that affects a society in an institutional dimension and its common sense, makes religious interpretations being less and less intersubjectively supported and loosing their status of being taken for granted. This situation encourages further secularization of individual life-worlds, and at persons who still identify themselves as religious strengthens the separation of religious province from the other domains of meanings and ways of experiencing the world. There is also a number of people who, despite the decline of presence of religious elements in widely shared common sense, perceive their lives through the prism of religious interpretations, and try to shape their own every-day life in this perspective. A remedy to the evanescence of confirmation in every-day communication are smaller communities clustered around shared meanings, as well as a stronger emphasising an experiential aspect. In the circumstances of the multitude of potentially internalizeable interpretative systems, differentiation of world-views and attitudes to the religious stuff, and lesser presence of religious meanings beyond religious institutions, the life-world category, meant as an individual representation of reality and a frame for experiences, can become an adequate tool of studying.

Opis:
In language studies, fossilization is associated with the formation of permanent intermediate systems and subsystems. The interlanguage that develops between L1 and L2 (Selinker 1972) becomes embedded, rather than the learner continuing to develop increasing proficiency in the L2. As a language learner remains deficient in the target language (TL), it is important to attempt to mitigate this process and its negative effects. From this perspective, a task of the language teacher is to identify pedagogies which can prevent students from becoming lexically entrenched. In this paper, we advocate dialogic pedagogy as one which can reduce the likelihood of fossilisation occurring and which emphasises collaboration between learners, making their learning experiences meaningful. A core element of dialogic teaching and learning is the role of talk in the classroom in stimulating and advancing students’ learning and understanding. We propose that prioritising the oral component of language learning through dialogic pedagogy can reduce fossilisation because misconceptions do not remain unchallenged and become ingrained. A culture of dialogue in which the voices of all learners and teachers are heard and responded to is one in which learners’ exchanges contribute to extended understanding for all of those taking part in the dialogue.
