Opis:
The aim of the article is to employ results from philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences in order to answer certain questions from the field of philosophy of art. What is specifically at issue is the problem of the cognitive underpinnings of subject’s relation to narrative fictions presented in novels and movies. A proposal according to which this relation is mediated by mental simulation is critically assessed. The author discusses two theses that are based on this general simulationist idea, namely theses that (1) a person engaged in reading a novel or watching a movie simulates mental states of the protagonists (empathizes with them); (2) the simulation mechanism underlies the ability to imagine fictional events presented in narratives.

Opis:
This paper considers the foundations of legal interpretation against the background of the theory of embodied cognition and mental simulation. It is argued that interpretation has a double, concrete-abstract nature. The understanding of concrete language is made possible by the mechanism of mental simulation. In turn, the interpretation of abstract language (and hence of most of legal language) requires to apply the procedures of exemplification, paraphrase and embedding. The relationship between these two modes of language comprehension is analyzed and the thesis is defended that they represent two extremes of a continuous spectrum rather than isolated mechanisms. Finally, the significance of such a conception of interpretation for legal methodology is considered. It is argued that the conception provides a unifying, foundational framework for any theory of legal interpretation, as well as generates fresh insights into the nature of understanding legal statutes. cancelcancel

Opis:
The cause of problems associated with overweight is often lack of persistence, ineffectiveness in the diet maintaining and uncontrollable overeating. Loss of excessive body weight is not easy goal to reach. The same feature refers to as well as implementation of all activities, which effects are delayed in time. Undertaking an activity that will have to be maintained for a longer time requires not only initiation step, but also perseverance, which supports the achievement of the goal. Beside perseverance the mental simulations of the result and process are important too. The aim of the research was analysis of correlations between the type of mental simulations and the normal body mass or overweight in study group.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present a structure for nursing education simulation that incorporates elements of blended and online simulation in a socially constructivist, culturally sensitive environment. To develop the structure for nursing education, a descriptive literature review was conducted in spring 2022 on simulations implemented in mental health nursing education. Nurses require the skills and knowledge to provide mental health care in every area of health care. According to the descriptive literature review, simulation-based learning such as high-fidelity mental health simulation resulted in increased confidence, knowledge gains and improved communication skills. Simulation is a wide concept and allows nurse lecturers to implement the pedagogy as they see it best. The simulation structure helps especially beginners to follow the simulation as a process. The structure eases the planning phase as well as the debriefing part of the simulation. As it has been shown in the analysis of the literature simulation can be effectively implemented in a blended and / or online environment. It is expected that in the future, simulation games and virtual, online simulations will be more typical ways to conduct a simulation.

Therapeutic chatbots as cognitive-affective artifacts
Autorzy:

Opis:
Conversational Artificial Intelligence (CAI) systems (also known as AI "chatbots") are among the most promising examples of the use of technology in mental health care. With already millions of users worldwide, CAI is likely to change the landscape of psychological help. Most researchers agree that existing CAIs are not “digital therapists” and using them is not a substitute for psychotherapy delivered by a human. But if they are not therapists, what are they, and what role can they play in mental health care? To answer these questions, we appeal to two well-established and widely discussed concepts: cognitive and affective artifacts. Cognitive artifacts are artificial devices contributing functionally to the performance of a cognitive task. Affective artifacts are objects which have the capacity to alter subjects’ affective state. We argue that therapeutic CAIs are a kind of cognitive-affective artifacts which contribute to positive therapeutic change by (i) simulating a (quasi-)therapeutic interaction, (ii) supporting the performance of cognitive tasks, and (iii) altering the affective condition of their users. This sheds new light on why virtually all existing mental health CAIs implement principles and techniques of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - a therapeutic orientation according to which affective change and, ultimately, positive therapeutic change is mediated by cognitive change. Simultaneously, it allows us to conceptualize better the potential and limitations of applying these technologies in therapy.

Opis:
A good situation awareness (SA) of the navigator is essential for the safety of the ship, especially in coastal areas. In this study, the Unity 3D engine was used to simulate the navigation of a coastal trading vessel along predefined routes in the Baltic Sea. The SA of the helmsman, who was either Chinese or European, was assessed several times with the SAGAT test (Endsley, 1995b, 20-21) and compared between low and high workload conditions and between manual and autopilot navigation. High workload and automated navigation both reduced SA significantly and in an additive manner. No difference was found between Chinese and European participants. In contrast to previous accident analyses of SA, we found that SA level 3 (projection of future states) was most strongly affected by both factors, while SA levels 1 (perception of relevant information) and 2 (comprehension of the current situation) suffered to a lesser extent. Further research is needed to establish specific relationships between types of automation on ships, types of workload, and SA problems in order to design countermeasures.
