Opis:: The paper deals with prosodic patterns of the Hausa poetry and investigates its stanzaic, metre, and rhyme structure with reference to the patterns developed in the Arabic poetry. Using the corpus of poems written in ajami by four contemporary poets the use of Arabic-based patterns as well as their “deviated” or “defected” forms have been investigated. The analysis confirms the cross-fertilization between the oral and written poems tradition in Hausa.

Opis:: The present paper deals with Latin and Polish translations of the Finnish epic “Kalevala”, which is written in the so-called Finnic “Kalevala-metre”, typical of the Finnic oral poetry. Its main features are: the use of trochaic tetrameter (octosyllabic lines), as well as sound parallelisms (alliteration, assonance), and the repetition of words. Due to the specificity of the Finnish language, it is difficult to retain those features in translation.

Opis:: Światło odegrało istotną rolę w kształtowaniu się definicji i sposobu odtwarzania jednej z podstawowych jednostek miar SI, a mianowicie metra, gdy porzucono jego definicję w oparciu o wzorzec materialny. Redefinicje spowodowane były potrzebą zwiększenia dokładności odtwarzania jednostki miary.
The light played an important role in definition and reproducing one of the basic SI units, namely the metre, when the definition based on a material standard was abandoned. The redefinitions were caused by the need to increase the accuracy of the measurement unit reproduction.

Opis:: This paper discusses the history of the first critical edition of the Hildebrandslied. The sole extant version of the famous Old High German epic, preserved only in fragments, was copied on the first and the last page of a codex dated to the 8th/9th c. and written in Fulda. The first scholarly edition of the Hildebrandslied was published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers who were also the first to recognize the poem’s alliterative verse form.

Opis:: The Finnish epic “Kalevala” is written in the so-called Finnic “Kalevala-metre”, typical of Finnic oral poetry. Its main features are the use of trochaic tetrameter (octosyllabic lines), alliteration, assonance, sound parallelisms and the repetition of words. It is difficult to retain those features in translation but one of the early successful attempts was the first full English translation directly from Finnish by William Forsell Kirby (1907). Kirby’s translation was a source of inspiration and the linguistic model for "The Story of Kullervo", a tale written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (probably in 1912), based on one of the “Kalevala”’s stories. Our aim is to compare those texts

Opis:: The author of this article examines the genesis of D’Annunzio’s Primo vere, published when D’Annunzio was 16 while he attended the famous Cicognini college in Prato. The first edition appeared in 1879 (the second, in the following year) and it was considered a great work; in fact, it was reviewed by Giuseppe Chiarini, one of the most popular writers of his time. Next, the author provides an analysis of Per nozze, one of the Alcaic lyrical poems in D’Annunzio’s book. This ode belongs to an established literary genre (for instance, poems by Catullus, Claudian, Theocritus, and Sappho are of this genre), and it is an important one because it allows us to foresee the later and greater D’Annunzio. At the end of the article, the author investigates why D’Annunzio used the Alcaic metre in this ode. It is not only a tribute to Horace (one of D’Annunzio’s favourite poets; in the appendix of Primo vere are some of Horace’s lyrics translated by D’Annunzio), who used this metre in 37 of his poems; there is another reason. In fact, we can establish a parallel between the metre and the ode: the Alcaic one has ascending and descending rhythms like D’Annunzio’s Per nozze, and it is full of happiness (a marriage takes place), but also of sadness, as he wants to underline the brevity of life and its vanity.

Opis:: The present paper focuses on instances of irregular, non-root accentuation placed on words of Germanic origin in Middle English iambic verse. A proposed explanation for the phenomenon is the continued special metrical status of heavy syllables from Old to Middle English and the retained potential of such syllables for attracting poetic accent. The analysis also takes into account additional factors, including possible external influences and morphological considerations. The text samples are selected basing on the date of their provenance and metrical regularity. In order to reduce the possibility of the results being affected by any loose applications of metre, the analysis is confined to the metrically strongest positions within each type of verse.
