Opis:: Idea of freepublic transport system is often presented as a mean of counteraction of the adverse, spatial, social and economic consequences of metropolisation process. A Belgian city of Hesselt, where inhabitants don’t pay for public transport journeys since 2007, is presented as an example to follow and supporting this thesis. Few other examples of the free public transport system in operation incline to reconsider the balance between benefits and costs of described solution. In the article there were presented definitions and a taxonomy of terms related to the free public transport system and reviewed Polish legal requirements for operation and development of the public transport system. The importance of the toll level in the public transport is analyzed in the paper in the context of the operation of the transport system in developing metropolitan area. In the summary there is presented considerations of the applicability and value of the free public transport for Gdańsk Metropolitan Area.

Opis:: Whose is the city? This question only superficially refers to the past when at least some cities were in fact law-making, autonomous communities of their citizens. Unlike in the past, the contemporary city is a random collection of individuals gathered in a space with no clear boundaries, who in their majority have a weak sense of identification with the place of their residence, whether longer or shorter. The residents of such a city are not citizens but merely users of space which has become a commodity. Taking Warsaw as an example, the paper shows the process of selling out the city space, which is driven by globalisation and metropolisation processes. The consequence of this is privatisation and fragmentation of space, leading to the evaporation of public space in the city.

Opis:: Na przestrzeni ostatnich lat zmieniło się postrzeganie miasta, jego funkcji oraz roli zarówno w skali lokalnej i regionalnej, krajowej czy międzynarodowej. Artykuł ma na celu omówienie współczesnych procesów zachodzących w mieście, procesu metropolizacji poprzez przedstawienie wybranych koncepcji znanych badaczy oraz próbę scharakteryzowania roli metropolii w regionie. Obecność wielkiego miasta, metropolii, które stanowi trzon gospodarki regionu, ma swoje zalety, ale również posiada słabe strony. W niniejszym opracowaniu została przedstawiona charakterystyka wpływu metropolii na jej otoczenie.
Over recent years changed the perception of the city, its function and the role of both local and regional, national or international. The changes taking place in the city and its functionality make building a new urban space. Simultaneously the metropolis is a place where are focused the main challenges that Europe will have to take in the coming years. Article aims to discuss contemporary processes taking place in the city, metropolisation process through the presentation of selected concept known researchers and attempt to characterize the role of metropolitan areas in the region. The presence of a big city, metropolis, which is the backbone of the economy of the region, has its advantages, but it also has weaknesses. In this paper expresses the influence of the metropolis to its surroundings.

If it is to be argued that concentrating on providing support to largest urban centres is one of the main methods of stimulating the socio-economic development of Eastern Poland, it would seem necessary to first check, if since 1989, in the conditions of market economy, their so far observed development did indeed have an effect on their hinterland. Using the example of Rzeszów, the capital of Podkarpackie region, the authors delimit the strength, character and directions of impact of a capital of a semi-peripheral region. Basing their reasoning on the research of the range of the daily urban system, a zone of strongest influence and metropolitan effects of Rzeszów was delimited. Next, the dynamics of change in the level of life and the level of development of municipalities in the zone as compared to other areas of the Podkarapackie region were measured. Though as demonstrated by research results, within the area of strong spatial influence of Rzeszów positive spread effects dominate, metropolitan functions in the city’s hinterland are weakly developed.

Opis:: Since the fall of communism, the big cities of Central Europe have been included in the international metropolitan network, and their economic performance has improved significantly. Based on that, it can be asserted that the whole region is undergoing a process of metropolisation, which may be manifested by a focus of development in the limited areas of metropolises. Therefore this paper aims to present the results of a closer examination of this process in Central Europe. It is based on a comparative analysis of the metropolises in relation to their countries in terms of economic performance. A taxonomic approach based on Hellwig’s development pattern is adopted. The available Eurostat data (NUTS 3 level) on a range of socio‑economic characteristics is used. The study results show that the economic performance of Central European metropolises is relatively closer to Western Europe’s cities than the countries’ non‑metropolitan parts. Highlighting development issues in Central Europe from the spatial‑metropolitan point of view is the paper’s added value.
Od upadku komunizmu, duże miasta Europy Środkowej stały się częścią światowej sieci metropolii, a ich rola gospodarcza znacznie wzrosła. Może to oznaczać, że region ten doświadcza procesu metropolizacji polegającego na skupianiu aktywności na ograniczonych obszarach dużych miast i ich bliskiego otoczenia. Z tego względu celem artykułu jest zbadanie procesu metropolizacji w EŚW. Badanie to jest oparte na analizie porównawczej metropolii i obszarów niemetropolitalnych pod względem poziomu rozwoju gospodarczego. W badaniu wykorzystano taksonomiczną miarę rozwoju Hellwiga. Użyto w nim danych Eurostatu (na poziomie NUTS 3) w zakresie szeregu wskaźników społeczno-ekonomicznych. Wyniki wskazują, że metropolie z regionu są bliższe pod względem gospodarczym metropoliom Europy Zachodniej, niż obszary niemetropolitalne z regionu w stosunku do ich zachodnich odpowiedników. Wartością dodaną artykułu jest spojrzenie na kwestię rozwoju regionu Europy Środkowej przez pryzmat przestrzenny i metropolitalny.
