Opis:
Multicast realises the data delivering to a group of destinations simultaneously while using the minimum network resources. The first implementation of multicasting has been built using specialized multicast routers and is well known as IP Multicast. Such a network comprises some drawback including complex addressing and routing scheme, it requires the deployment of special routers that are rather expensive and finally, there has not been proposed a reasonable business model regarding cross-providers multicast realization. Thereby, for the past few years, a new interest in delivering multicast traffic has arisen and some multicast systems defined for end-hosts overlay network have been successfully proposed. Overlay multicast implements a multicast technique at the top of computer networks and creates a virtual topology of clients which duplicate packets and maintain a multicast structure. This overlay structure forms an independent layer with logical links between the nodes without the knowledge about the underlaying topology. In the work we take a look at flow cost minimization of multicast stream in a system which combines the advantages of overlays and underlaying network awareness. This papers presents three independent linear-based models aimed at optimization of multicast tree topology and its network level unicast realization. The proposed formulations can be applied for deriving either lower bound of flows costs in existing systems or for designing new cooperative multilayer protocols for effective multicast transmission.

Opis:
The determination of effective mechanical properties of multi-layer composite is presented in this paper. Computations based on finite element method predicting properties of inhomogeneous materials require solving huge tasks. More effective is Mori-Tanaka approach, typical for micromechanics problems. For regularly distributed fibers closed-forms for effective composite material properties are possible to derive. The results of homogenization are used in strength analysis of the composite pressure vessel.

Here, we report the unusual behavior shown by the PbS samples prepared using a multilayer deposition approach by chemical solution deposition method. Thin samples were prepared by depositing several films at different deposition conditions on glass substrates. X-ray diffraction showed that final multilayer samples showed a peculiar variation. Even when they showed well defined structure the intensities of the peaks do not correspond to those of the initial films.

Opis:
The issue of missile impact resistance is discussed in detail in many articles and standard papers dealing with body armour. The experience from many armed conflicts, however, may be proof that the real risks are related to a greater degree to fragments than those of bullets. It can be shown that the more often the object is destroyed as a result high-velocity impact of fragments. The paper describes the results of numerical simulations of 22 calibre bullet shrapnel piercing multilayer ballistic shield. The shield was made of ceramics, steel and composite materials. The shape of the fragment is based on the American the defence standard MIL-DTL-46593B. The fragment tested is made through the process of cold rolling steel 4337H or 4340H characterized by hardness of about 30 units on the Rockwell scale. The mass of the fragment is 17 grains (1.14 g). The ballistic shield, that was hit by fragmentation, was a rectangular plate made of a Kevlar composite and, in another variant, an epoxy composite. The test was conducted in accordance with the terms of ballistic fragmentation resistance test V50 contained in standard MIL-STD-662F. In undertaking the simulation was used the Finite Element Method (FEM) which is implemented in LS-Dyna programme. The numerical calculations were performed in the explicit option on a multiprocessor computational cluster. The necessary information to build a model like materials’ properties is taken from extensive literature. The numerical simulation resulted in, inter alia, maps and diagrams of stress, strain and energy, which were treated to further detailed analysis. On this basis of an evaluation was carried out and correction made to the FEA model. The resulting model has enabled an observation of the penetration of the ballistic shield and the ballistic behaviour of the fragment when it contacts with obstacle. These observations are essential in the design of modern protective structures and undertaking research without incurring excessive financial costs generated by laboratory experiments.

Opis:
We proposed to design a tunable multichannel optical filter composed of uniaxial indefinite metamaterial and dielectric photonic crystal categories arrangement, which can be employed as a valuable variation of peak transmission in microwave frequency. Because of the optical axis and polarization dependence of the uniaxial metamaterial layer, the position trend in the multichannel optical filter is shown to also rely on both TE and TM polarizations. The numerical results show that by changes of the incidence angle, width of photonic band gap (PBG) compacts (widens) at TE (TM) polarization and the PBG of the structure shifts towards the higher frequency region, for both polarizations. In addition, the multichannel optical filter properties and shift trend of the PBG are also affected by changing the optical axis of the uniaxial indefinite metamaterial. Thus, results shown that without appending defect layer in this structure, the sets of comb-like resonant peaks in transmission modes can be utilized in the lower or higher band edge of PBG at TE and TM polarizations.

The results of the study of melting of Bi-Sn and Pb-Sn polycrystalline layered film systems with the thickness of 200-400 nm on a substrate with temperature gradient are given. Multilayer (each layer is of 10-20 nm) and bilayer films (layers are of 100-200 nm) of the same total thickness have been investigated. Broadening of the melting range in all films and lowering of melting point in multilayer samples compared to the bilayer ones have been observed. The observed phenomena are discussed within existing thermodynamic concepts in consideration of interfacial energy of contacting layers of components and energy of grain boundaries in polycrystalline films.

Opis:
In this paper, we describe how several soft computing tools can be used to assist in high throughput screening of potential drug candidates. Individual small molecules (ligands) are assessed for their potential to bind to specific proteins (receptors). Committees of multilayer networks are used to classify protein-ligand complexes as good binders or bad binders, based on selected chemical descriptors. The novel aspects of this paper include the use of statistical analyses on the weights of single layer networks to select the appropriate descriptors, the use of Monte Carlo cross-validation to provide confidence measures of network performance (and also to identify problems in the data), the addition of new chemical descriptors to improve network accuracy, and the use of Self Organizing Maps to analyze the performance of the trained network and identify anomalies. We demonstrate the procedures on a large practical data set, and use them to discover a promising characteristic of the data. We also perform virtual screenings with the trained networks on a number of benchmark sets and analyze the results.

Opis:
The paper presents some aspects of modelling of multi-layer materials cutting process. Numerical calculation with the finite element method (Lagrangian equations) were performed for the decohesion process simulation of the example workpieces (machined with one tool wedge) consisted of two and three layers with different mechanical properties. Results of calculation in the form of colour maps of temperature and plastic strain fields distributions in the cutting zone are presented. An example course in time of the main cutting force components, during wedge tool passage through the different layers of the cutting material, is presented.
W pracy omówiono wybrane zagadnienia modelowania procesu skrawania materiałów wielowarstwowych. Obliczenia numeryczne metodą elementów skończonych (równania Lagrange'a) prowadzono w celu symulacji procesu dekohezji modelowych materiałów obrabianych. Materiały składają się z dwóch lub trzech warstw o różnych właściwościach mechanicznych. Obróbkę skrawaniem prowadzono za pomocą jednego ostrza narzędzia. Określono rozkłady wartości temperatury i odkształcenia plastycznego w strefie skrawania. Przedstawiono przykłady zmiany wartości składowych całkowitej siły skrawania podczas przejścia ostrza narzędzia między różnymi warstwami skrawanego materiału.

Opis:
An article describes an issue of increasing the passive safety of soldiers in a military vehicle subjected to loads resulting from explosion mine or IED. Traditional methods to increase security involving the application of additional layers made using materials with high density. This approach contributes to a reduction mobility and efficiency vehicle on the battlefield. For these reasons, it is necessary to search new design solution, which will benefit low-density material through which driving parameters of vehicle in combat do not worsen. Mentioned reasons led to propose a new concept protective shield made of elastomer with inclusion in form of a liquid. Effectiveness of the proposed protective shield will be verified on the bench traverse. The blast shock wave will be induced by detonation of HE charge at the central point over 430 mm from the top surface of the range stand. Experimental tests will be used to validate the numerical model. After positive validation and verification, numerical model it can be used for other blast conditions or optimize protective shield. FEM numerical modelling, dynamic simulations and postprocessing were carried out using the following CAE systems: CATIA, HyperMesh, LS-DYNA (a solver), LS-PrePost.

Opis:
The mechanical and tribological behavior of physical vapor deposited coatings on soft substrate materials gains increasing interest due to economical and environmental aspects – e.g. substitution of steels by light-weight metals or polymers in transport vehicles. Nevertheless, such soft materials require surface protection against wear in tribological contacts. Single layer hard coatings deposited at room temperature are brittle with a relatively poor adhesion. Therefore, they should be better substituted by tough multilayer coatings of soft-hard material combinations. However, the mechanics of such multilayer coatings with several 10 nm thick bilayer periods is difficult and yet not well described. The presented work tries to fill the gap of knowledge by focusing both on mechanical investigations of hardness, adhesion, and wear and on microscopic elucidation of deformation mechanisms. In the paper 1 ěm thick Ti/TiN multilayer stacks were deposited by magnetron sputtering on soft austenitic steel substrates at room temperature to prevent distortion of functional components in future applications. High hardness was found for 8 and 16 bilayer films with modulation ratio Ti:TiN = 1:2 and 1:4. This was attributed (with use of transmission electron microscopy) to stopping the crack propagation in thin Ti layers of the multilayer systems by shear deformation combined with different fracture mechanisms in comparison with that for the TiN single layers (edge cracks at the border of the contact area and ring cracks outside, respectively).
