Opis:
This article proposes a method and a laboratory setup for testing the fatigue strength of materials with the use of vibration signals and a neodymium fatigue-testing machine. The machine supports non-contact fatigue testing of construction materials, and analyses of bending and torsional behaviour of magnetic and non-magnetic materials at any excitation range. The discussed machine is a non-contact bending device, and when an appropriate adapter is used, it supports analyses of torsional behaviour in determinations of material wear. A neodymium fatigue-testing machine can also be used to evaluate sample deformation by registering amplitude, RMS deviation from equilibriumcalculated values, temperature of sample notch, deflections along the length of the sample, stress at the cross-section of the notch and load applied at the terminal section of the sample. Simplified diagram of a rotating-bending fatigue testing machine, diagrams of biaxial rotating-bending fatigue testing machines, diagrams of a bending fatigue testing machine, displacement range of a material point in the sample induced by neodymium magnets on a double disc, displacement range of a material point in the sample at rotational frequency, displacement range of a material point in the sample at rotational frequency, changes in the sample's notch temperature and displacement amplitude are presented in the paper.

Opis:
This paper will report on a new all-optical technique of relative intensity noise (RIN) suppression for solidstate and semiconductor lasers. The new scheme we have used is based on an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (UMZI), which is able to cancel the intensity noise enhancement at relaxation resonance. Although the relaxation oscillations frequency and the level of the corresponding noise maximum are extremely different concerning solid-state microchip lasers and semiconductor laser diodes, the proposed passive noise suppression is well suited for both types of laser sources used in telecommunication. The UMZ fiber interferometer solution for solid-state lasers demonstrated hereunder was generalized and deployed in case of semiconductor lasers as well.

Opis:
In this work photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin fi lms doped with 8.51 at. % of Nd were described. The self-cleaning phenomenon of thin fi lms was discussed together with the structural, optical and surface properties of prepared thin fi lms. Transparent coatings based on titanium dioxide were manufactured by high-energy reactive magnetron sputtering process. Incorporation of Nd during sputtering process results in amorphous behavior, without a signifi cant infl uence on transparency and colour as compared to the undoped TiO2-rutile matrix. Nevertheless, doping with neodymium doubles the photocatalytic activity of the matrix due to higher quantity of photo-generated charge carriers and more effi cient mechanism of energy transfer.

Opis:
The present research aims at studying the extractability of Nd(III) by Cyanex® 572 as a new extractant form from nitrate solutions. The effects of contact time, the concentration of nitrate ion, hydrogen ion, and extractant, and type of diluent were discussed, suggesting that the extraction of neodymium with Cyanex 572 was found to be a cation-exchange mechanism releasing three $H^+$ ion during the extraction. Cation- exchange mechanism of Nd(III) with Cyanex 572 was studied using slope analysis. Hydrogen ion concentration strongly influences the extraction behavior of Nd(III) in the solvent extraction. Results showed that three moles of Cyanex 572 are incorporated in the extraction process of one-mole neodymium(III) from the aqueous solutions. The concentration of nitrate ion in the aqueous solution has positive effect on the extraction efficiency of neodymium due to the salting out effect. The type of diluent influences the extraction efficiency of Nd(III). Results indicated that non-polar diluents were suitable solvents for the extraction of neodymium(III).

Opis:
Partitioning of uranium and neodymium was studied in a ‘molten chloride salt – liquid Ga-X (X = In or Sn) alloy’ system. Chloride melts were based on the low-melting ternary LiCl-KCl-CsCl eutectic. Nd/U separation factors were calculated from the thermodynamic data as well as determined experimentally. Separation of uranium and neodymium was studied using reductive extraction with neodymium acting as a reducing agent. Efficient partitioning of lanthanides (Nd) and actinides (U), simulating fission products and fissile materials in irradiated nuclear fuels, was achieved in a single stage process. The experimentally observed Nd/U separation factor valued up to 106, depending on the conditions.

Opis:
Titanium dioxide thin films doped with the same amount of neodymium were prepared using two different magnetron sputtering methods. Thin films of anatase structure were deposited with the aid of Low Pressure Hot Target Magnetron Sputtering, while rutile coatings were manufactured using High Energy Reactive Magnetron Sputtering process. The thin films composition was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy and the amount of the dopant was equal to 1 at. %. Structural properties were evaluated using transmission electron microscopy and revealed that anatase films had fibrous structure, while rutile had densely packed columnar structure. Atomic force microscopy investigations showed that the surface of both films was homogenous and consisted of nanocrystalline grains. Photocatalytic activity was assessed based on the phenol decomposition. Results showed that both thin films were photocatalytically active, however coating with anatase phase decomposed higher amount of phenol. The transparency of both thin films was high and equal to ca. 80% in the visible wavelength range. The photoluminescence intensity was much higher in case of the coating with rutile structure.

Opis:
The structural, morphological and photoluminescent properties of thermally evaporated neodymium oxide (Nd₂O₃) thin films deposited onto nanostructured silicon (Si-ns) are reported. Si-ns embedded in silicon nitride (SiN) thin films are prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD). SiN and Nd₂O₃ thin films uniformity and Si-ns formation are confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of neodymium (Nd), silicon (Si), oxygen (O), and phosphorus (P) is investigated by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Post-annealing SIMS profile indicates an improvement of the homogeneity of activated P distribution in Si bulk. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have been employed to determine amorphous silicon (a-Si), crystalline silicon (c-Si), Nd₂O₃ and SiN phases present in the Nd₂O₃-SiN bilayers with their corresponding chemical bonds. After annealing, a Raman shift toward lower wavenumbers is recorded for the Si peak. XPS data reveal the formation of Nd₂O₃ thin films with Nd-O bonding incorporating trivalent Nd ions (Nd3+). Strong room-temperature photoluminescence is recorded in the visible light range from the Si-ns. Nd-related photoluminescent emission in the near infrared (NIR) range is observed at wavelengths of 1025-1031 nm and 1083 nm, and hence is expected to improve light harvesting of Si-based photovoltaic devices.

Opis:
In this paper the Hydrogenation, Disproportionation, Desorption and Recombination (HDDR) route was tested, for the Nd-Fe-B master alloy, as a prospective procedure for recycling of sintered scrap neodymium magnets. The HDDR method is based on the hydrogen induced reversal phase transformation of Nd-Fe-B alloy: Nd2Fe14B + (2±x) H2 = 2NdH2±x + Fe2B + 12Fe. Microstructural observations (SEM), phase constitution studies (XRD) and measurement of magnetic properties (VSM) were done to investigate the HDDR transformation progress. It was observed that disproportionation reaction starts at the grain boundaries, where the Nd-rich phase is located. Average grain size was reduced and coercive material was produced as a result of the HDDR process. Obtained results are similar to literature data.

Opis:
Implementing multifunctional characteristics in a metallo-supramolecular system with reversible stimuli-induced response is a significant challenge. In this study, a simple, readily available macrocyclic Nd(III) complex $[NdL(CF_{3}SO_{3})_{3}]$ (1) exhibits tunable emission from the lanthanide center, which can be modulated by temperature and pressure. Within phase α at 1.5 GPa the onset of negative linear compressibility (NLC) along axis a takes place. At 3.0 GPa, single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the $CF_{3}SO_{3}$ − ion ordering, inducing a non-centrosymmetric phase β with modified material properties. Phase α shows strong pressure-induced absorption and emission changes, suitable for precise, temperature-independent luminescent manometry, with an emission line shift of Δλ/Δp = 2.85 nm $GPa^{−1}$ in the NIR range. The designed optical sensor also enables remote temperature monitoring (15–460 K) through a pressure-independent band intensity ratio of Nd(III) Stark components. Finally, field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization is observed and analyzed using both standard fitting procedures and alternative approach that accounts for the influence of local vibration modes. This unique coexistence of these behaviors mark a significant step toward creating multifunctional supramolecular platforms, easily extendable to other systems with tunable properties.

Opis:
The paper presents an original method of measuring the actual chromite content in the circulating moulding sand of foundry. This type of material is applied for production of moulds. This is the case of foundry which most frequently perform heavy casting in which for the construction of chemical hardening mould is used, both the quartz sand and chromite sand. After the dry reclamation of used moulding sand, both types of sands are mixed in various ratios resulting that in reclaimed sand silos, the layers of varying content of chromite in mixture are observed. For chromite recuperation from the circulating moulding sand there are applied the appropriate installations equipped with separate elements generating locally strong magnetic field. The knowledge of the current ratio of chromite and quartz sand allows to optimize the settings of installation and control of the separation efficiency. The arduous and time-consuming method of determining the content of chromite using bromoform liquid requires operational powers and precautions during using this toxic liquid. It was developed and tested the new, uncomplicated gravimetric laboratory method using powerful permanent magnets (neodymium). The method is used in the production conditions of casting for current inspection of chromite quantity in used sand in reclamation plant.
