Characteristics of Great Spotted Woodpecker roosting holes are compared with those used for breeding. Neither postbreeding nor winter roosting holes differed from woodpecker nests with respect to tree species. condition, girth at breast height, cavity height or cavity direction. However, behavioural observations suggested that particular holes might be selected, probably in connection with microclimate condition and predator avoidance.

Opis:
Recent social, cultural and economic changes affect the lifecycle of both families and individuals, having considerable impact on scientifically defined stages, the time dedicated to them, and developmental tasks they are associated with. One of such stages is the move of an adult child out of the family home, which is more and more often put off at the time being. The phenomenon of delaying the moment of separating yourself from your parents is referred to as nesting. Sociological and demographic studies conducted so far show that living with custodians in spite of becoming mature is getting more and more popular among young adults in Poland. In-depth analyses show that even though financial factors (low income, low purchasing power of adult children and no employment) are a significant determinant of nesting in Poland, such decisions are triggered by other motives as well. Nesting, in spite of being an individual attitude, is always a shared experience and the outcome of forces and vectors with the family ecosystem. Nesters are not the only actors of the crowded nest arrangement. Custodians and sometimes also sibling play a significant role there too. This leads to another conclusion, i.e. that nesters are not the only beneficiaries of nesting, while parents are not the only ones who bear the consequences of this co-residency.

Opis:
In the period of young adulthood, i.e., between ages 18–20 and 30–35, the coupling of the duties, goals, and ambitions connected with various life activities takes place, these being in education, participation in the labour market, self-supporting a household, starting a family, becoming a parent, and active participation in the social life. The social and cultural as well as economic changes that are occurring nowadays affect the course of family life as well as the stages of individual development. One of these stages refers to a young adult leaving the family home. However, it is more and more often the case that this moment gets deferred. Research conducted by sociologists and demographers in the recent years shows that the growing share of young people in industrialised countries choose to live with their parents in spite of their adult age. The increase in young adults staying in the family home in the recent years has led to the term ‘nesters’ being coined for them, while the effect of their bond with their guardians being stretched in time is now referred to as the ‘crowded nest’ or ‘cluttered nest’. This article offers an insight into one of the components of the process of reaching adulthood, namely leaving parental home. The qualitative study (carried out in 2012 and 2013) combines statistical analyses and personal interviews; its results are based on 42 interviews with women and men aged between 27 and 38 who live with their parents in Warsaw, Poland. This interview-based analysis focuses on demonstrating the process of nesting of young adults and the interviewed persons’ perception of this behaviour.

The study was carried out in two nature reserves in Warsaw (central Poland) in 1992-1995. Following aspects of Dendrocopos major nest hole's localisation are describing: tree species, height above the ground, tree trunk girth, condition of tree, tree fragrnent (in which nest was located) and entrance's exposure. Near all nest's parameters were different between two study areas what suggest that Great Spotted Woodpecker is quite indiscriminate in nest site selection.

Opis:
Modern multifunctional forest management needs indicators showing the state of forest environment. Commonly used solution is monitoring of the abundance of species with specific environmental requirements. This paper analyses the possibility of use of the biggest European woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) as forest management quality indicator. The black woodpecker resides in all types of forest sites. The species prefers big thick trees as a nest trees, its cavities were mainly made in birches Betula sp. in Western and Southern Europe, Scots pines Pinus sylvestris in Middle and Eastern Europe and aspens Populus tremula in Northern Europe. The black woodpecker, excavating large−sized breeding cavities, is defined as a key species due to the creation of breeding sites for large secondary cavity−nesters. Because of the breeding requirements, black woodpecker can also be treated as an umbrella species for organisms associated with old trees. The way of feeding of that species shows a strong connection with the availability of dead wood. The black woodpecker is a sedentary species, which means that it is highly depended on the structure of the forest and quickly responds to changes caused by forest management. Because of the habitat requirements and relationships with other species, as well as the wide geographical range, it is a good indicator species for multifunctional suitable forest management. It can also act as a keystone species for secondary cavity nesters and umbrella species for organisms associated with old, dying trees.

Territoriality in Red-breasted Flycatchers was studied in the Białowieża Forest of Eastern Poland during five consecutive breeding seasons (2000–2004). In total 99 males were individually marked, and evidence of polyterritoriality was found in 10% of them. The proportion of polyterritorial males varied from 0% (in 2003) to 13.6% (in 2001). The mean distance between the first and second territories was 278 m (± 179.37, n = 10). The rate of polyterritoriality was not related to age class, as older males defended dual territories that were, on average, not more distantly separated than those of younger males. One case of polygyny was recorded. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence for polyteritoriality and polygyny in male Red-breasted Flycatchers.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the ornithological research performed in the oldest dry coniferous forests of Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The field study took place on three 25-ha-sites overgrown with Scots pine Pinus sylvestris over 150 years old. The species composition of the dominant group was found to differ from that of other forests. Hole-nesters constituted the most important part of the population of birds together with old and mature forest specialists and residents. Hole-nesters were numerously represented (50% of all noted pairs). Old and mature forest specialists constituted 40% of all pairs. Seven species connected to natural forest clearings were also found to be of significant importance. The presence of such ecological groups is proof of the biological balance and diversity of the researched forests.
