Opis:
The purpose of this article is to conceptualise the problem of companies’ simultaneous embeddedness in different local, international and global networks and to refer this to the companies’ degree of internationalisation. The emphasis of the analysis is put on local companies (that is companies not involved directly in activities in foreign markets). In this article the concept of embeddedness and the network approach is applied to the analysis of local enterprises’ activities from an international perspective. We argue that even companies selling solely in the local market are entangled in international dependencies, which in turn have a significant impact on their operations, performance and internationalisation process. In this way we raise the question as to which companies may be called “internationalised”.

Opis:
PURPOSE: The analysis of the literature shows that the attempts to conceptualize the strategic aspects of the network bring a significant impact on the development of research on organizational networks. This article aims to analyze the new trends in strategic management, and in particular on the possibility of exploring the network approach in strategic management, through the existing literature and the presentation of the new contributions of the following articles published in the current issue. METHODOLOGY: The article is descriptive in character; thus it is based on a literature review and its constructive critics. A narrative literature review was used to present the main assumptions and features of the network approach in strategic management, along with an indication of emerging trends and new directions. Also the identification of theoretical foundations for understanding the processes of strategic change in inter-organizational networks and the proposition of the way to understand network strategy were presented. FINDINGS: The research included in this issue shows that from a network perspective, business strategy plays an important role in guiding the development of individual relationships and networks. Exploring the network approach in strategic management allows one to adopt the category of network strategy, which can be described through the coexistence of cooperation and competition. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: Considerations lead to the conclusion that the business strategy must be expressed in terms of potential changes in the network in which the company operates, taking into account its current and selected position in the network. Despite the fact that the current state of research on organizational networks in the theory of strategic management shows that this approach is already quite well established, on the basis of the analysis of research results concerning the conceptualization of strategic aspects of the network, the existing problems and limitations were identified. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The main problems related to the exploration of the network approach and the resulting consequences for the definition of the network strategy were indicated. Also, the combination of an organizational and economic approach with the logic of competitive advantage and relational annuity. The demonstration that the network perspective in strategic management allows for a more complete understanding of the strategic behavior of modern enterprises.

Opis:
Network structure refers to a general system, network, or pattern of relationships that can be derived from the observable behavior of animate and inanimate actors or objects in a given population. Structure is usually understood as the arrangement of parts or elements of some complexity tied together by relations. The study of these relations is the subject of network theory. A network consists of nodes and links that form dyads, triads, groups, or a system of interconnected animate (actors) and inanimate objects, based on the specific types of relationships between them. In a dyad, ties come together, through the type of relation, to create a system of interdependence. Triads are fundamental network structures. There are 16 types of triads in a directed network in which balanced relationships or structural holes can be analyzed. This entry further defines network structure and then discusses the theoretical concepts behind it, basic types of networks in terms of their topology, and the measurement of network topology. A network is dynamic by nature. Within network structure, nodes and relations are established, maintained, or broken (deleted), determining similarity between attitudes and behaviors. There is a shift from individual-level analysis to relational and systemic research. Network structure and networks are an excellent way of presenting phenomena and objects from the perspective of the network of relations, interactions, and interdependence between them. Animate objects (e.g., human entities, organizations, animals), inanimate objects (e.g., things, artifacts), or contemporary epidemiological phenomena are mutually dependent on each other, creating an extensive, complex, and dynamic network structure. Many complex systems have a network structure. The most popular of them are the Internet, World Wide Web, and the citation network. Contemporary realities have driven researchers to focus on understanding the structure of the network of contacts during epidemics, which has a decisive impact on the dynamics of the spread of diseases. Determining this structure allows effective interventions to control and prevent epidemics. Standard research and social and behavioral methods pay attention to the attributes and characteristics of individual actors, which are studied independently of each other. Contemporary research in social or natural sciences, in which networks play a key role, focuses on the structure of the relations that exist between entities or objects.

Opis:
The IP over optical (IPO) network is becoming one of the most interesting among all proposed models of transport networks nowadays. In an IPO network, the reconfiguration capability of the network could be used in order to balance the load of its network elements (NEs). Reconfiguration operations (i.e., switching in OXC nodes and rerouting in IP routers) take place in real-time. Consequently, intensive changes in NEs settings might cause failures in the existing connections in the network. For that reason, changes in Nes settings should be coordinated in a reconfiguration process. In this paper, the author has proposed an optimization method for such reconfiguration process. The mathematical model of the method including computation results has been presented.

In the paper, we describe a "plug-and-play" configuration of nodes of a tactical network on the basis of XML configuration templates and a network plan, developed during the network planning process. We present the concept of a configuration repository, an XML-based database that stores network structure and configuration data, and describe how the Simple Network Management Protocol is used to apply the settings to network devices. We also comment on a possible use of the next-generation NETCONF protocol for such a task.

Opis:
The article discusses the results of an analysis of student’s drawings/sketches and interviews about the internal structure of the human body. The problems discussed in this article have an interdisciplinary approach. Our goal was not a psychological analysis of children’s drawings, but the presentation of such productions in the light of two dimensions (drawing and sketching) and the justification of highlighting them in relation to research in the field of cognitive science. Hence, the analysis of graphic productions is presented from a didactic dimension (e.g. the scale used to classify children’s graphical products), biological (anatomy) and cognitive – classifying them as drawings or sketches. The latest findings from neuroscience suggest that there are three networks involved in our brain – default, executive, and salient. Each of these networks generates different energy costs, involves different ways of processing information, or different effects resulting from its recruitment. The authors claim that the graphic may also reflect the involvement of one of the networks. While drawings are produced by using the executive network, sketches are the results of implementing a default network. Both drawings and sketches make it possible to explore the children’s conceptions on a given topic. The differences between them are revealed when within this product, one might (or might not) find a reflection of subjectivity. While the executive network run by drawing allows one to reflect a concept, to answer a question, the inclusion of the default network allows one to run the autobiographical memory, to ask questions, and to search for an answer.

Opis:
Trust to modern telecommunications networks plays an important role as a driver of technological and market success of any technology or telecommunication services. Most of the technological approaches to this problem are focused only on network security and do not include such a factor as the quality of service (QoS), which also plays an important role in the formation of trust both from the consumers and the regulator. The future 5G mobile technology will be the engine of development of telecommunications until 2020 and the formation of trust to the 5G networks is one of the main tasks for developers. The authors present the view on the trust to 5G networks in the plane of QoS requirements formation and QoS management. QoS requirements to 5 G networks were determined on the basis of three main business models of services: xMBB, M-MTC and U-MTC and the need to ensure user trust to networks. Infrastructure requirements for QoS control and spectrum management network entities which are based on Network Function Virtualization (NFV) principles have been formed.

Network myopia : an empirical study of network perception
Autorzy:

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to examine the perception of network surroundings by managers. We scrutinize a random sample of 305 Polish logistics services firms in order to capture the managers' perception of direct and indirect relationships. We have identified a network myopia phenomenon, that is a narrow view of relevant actors and relationships in the firm's network environment. Our data suggest that managers rate vertical relationships along the supply chain much higher as compared to the value network, and direct relationships much higher as compared to indirect ones. We find support for the concern expressed in previous studies that managers may be narrowing the number and diversity of relevant actors to manageable levels, making their extended network largely invisible. We substantiate the gap arising from the managers' network perception insofar as exploiting the potential of network strategies is concerned. This may undermine the capability to see prospective partners, the benefits of establishing diverse relationships, and the opportunities embedded in networks. This study extends earlier research on network pictures by better understanding the views of network surroundings by involved actors.

Opis:
Contemporary economic networks operate in a turbulent geo-economic context in which the external environment determines the formation or disintegration of such networks. The article focuses on economic networks through the prism of network analysis, actor-network theory, and network theory. As a consequence, the authors attempted to develop an actor-network model, taking into account the geo-economic context, social and technical actors, their roles and positions in the economic network, and network measures (centrality, knowledge/resource/task diversity, and redundancy). Due to the conceptual nature of the article, a less formalised, narrative literature review was used, which allowed for the free selection of literature and its interpretation in the context of the research question posed. As a result, a conceptual actor-network model for economic networks was created, understood as a framework for the analysis of the network of relations, interactions, and interdependencies occurring between the socio-technical actors of the economic networks through the prism of the allocation and distribution of information, knowledge, resources, and tasks. The actor-network model is the starting point for further, more advanced research, as well as the operationalisation and validation of the model, which would contribute to the actor-network theory and network theory. In this conceptual form, the presented actor-network model seems to be universal, and its application is possible whenever we can identify actors and the relationships between them. Its implementation in the study of economic networks in any sector is conditioned by the definition of social and technical actors; their relations, roles, and positions in the network affecting the efficiency of the network as a whole.
