Opis:: This paper presents some new results on exogeneity in models with latent variables. The concept of exogeneity is extended to the class of models with latent variables, in which a subset of parameters and latent variables is of interest. Exogeneity is discussed from the Bayesian point of view. We propose sufficient weak and strong exogeneity conditions in the vector error correction model (VECM) with stochastic volatility (SV) disturbances. Finally, an empirical illustration based on the VECM-SV model for the daily growth rates of two main official Polish exchange rates: USD/PLN and EUR/PLN, as well as EUR/USD from the international Forex market is presented. The exogeneity of the EUR/USD rate is examined. The strong exogeneity hypothesis of the EUR/USD rate is not rejected by the data.

Opis:: International capital flows can be hampered by a variety of barriers such as transaction costs, information costs, and legal restrictions. The solution in this situation can be dual listing. The framework of the research presented here assumes that domestic securities are dually listed on a foreign capital market, while none of the foreign securities is dually listed on the domestic capital market. This paper is concerned with a dependence analysis of the log-levels and returns of Austrian stocks listed in Frankfurt and Vienna. The important issue is dynamic linear and non-linear causality between log-levels (returns) of prices and the indices atx and dax. In this context the important directions of causality are found along with the level of relations of the selected typesof causality.

Opis:: High survey nonresponse in unemployment duration studies may have a strong effect on inference if exit from unemployment affects the chance of nonresponse (nonresponse causality). In rotational studies large part of the nonresponse results from panel attritions. A method to test the presence of the causality mechanism for rotating panel designs is proposed and its asymptotic consistency is proved under the Cox regression model. An application to real labor data and a simulation study are shown.

Tytuł:: Argumentation for non-reductive physicalism in contemporary theory of mind
Argumentacja na rzecz nieredukcyjnego fizykalizmu we współczesnej teorii umysłu

Opis:: Currently, the dominant ontological view in the discourse on mental causality in contemporary philosophy of mind is physicalism, which is usually divided into two positions - reductive physicalism and non-reductive physicalism (NRP). This paper brings attention to the view of non-reductive physicalism, but also to the most important argument in favor of the reductive version made by Jaegwon Kim, as well as the critique of this argument. The theoretical basis for the mechanism of the relation that takes place between physical and mental events is the concept of supervenience, and in the context of NRP, also the token identity theory. Most versions of nonreductive physicalism also assume there to be mental causality of mental events or properties. Proving this is usually the main goal of NRP supporters and a bone of contention in discussions with scholars supporting the thesis of reductive physicalism. In this work, I present several important positions of NRP, which together represent a variety of argumentative strategies for this view and creativity in finding solutions. I consider Donald Davidson's anomalous monism as the most important and the most convincing position, although it is a theory that is analogous to the NRP and, in order to define it as being part of this trend, some ontological transformations must be made.
Obecnie dominującym poglądem ontologicznym w dyskursie dotyczącym przyczynowości mentalnej we współczesnej filozofii umysłu jest fizykalizm, który zwyczajowo dzieli się na dwa stanowiska – fizykalizm redukcyjny i fizykalizm nieredukcyjny (NRP). Ta praca przybliża pogląd nieredukcyjnego fizykalizmu, lecz również najważniejszy argument na rzecz wersji redukcyjnej autorstwa Jaegwona Kima, a także krytykę tego argumentu. Podstawą teoretyczną mechanizmu relacji, która zachodzi pomiędzy zdarzeniami fizycznymi i mentalnymi jest koncepcja superweniencji, a w kontekście NRP także teoria tożsamości tokenowej. Większość wersji nieredukcyjnego fizykalizmu zakłada też przyczynowość mentalną zdarzeń lub własności mentalnych. Dowiedzenie tej tezy jest na ogół głównym celem zwolenników NRP i kością niezgody w dyskusji z uczonymi popierającymi tezę redukcyjnego fizykalizmu. W tej pracy przytaczam kilka istotnych stanowisk NRP, które łącznie prezentują różnorodność strategii argumentacyjnych na rzecz tego poglądu oraz kreatywność w poszukiwaniu rozwiązań. Za najważniejsze i najbardziej przekonujące stanowisko uznaję monizm anomalny Donalda Davidsona, choć jest to teoria, która jest analogiczna do NRP i żeby określić ją jako będącą częścią tego nurtu, należy dokonać pewnych ontologicznych przekształceń.

Opis:: Declining participation rates in social surveys stimulate research to better understand nonresponse mechanisms and their impact on related statistical inference. In this paper we focus on potential causal relationship between nonresponse and job finding in survey unemployment studies. Selected approaches are discussed from the perspective of counterfactual causality concept.
Warunek nieobciążoności próby w statystycznych badaniach społecznych praktycznie nigdy nie jest spełniony, a w sondażowych badaniach rynku pracy poziom odmowy udziału niejednokrotnie przekracza 40%. Dokładność wniosków statystycznych w takich sytuacjach może być poprawiona lepszym zrozumieniem mechanizmu odmowy. Szczególnie niekorzystną sytuacją w statystycznej analizie danych bezrobocia jest zależność pomiędzy czasem poszukiwania pracy i odmową udziału. W pracy omawia się metodę weryfikacji takiego mechanizmu odmowy w perspektywie kontrfaktycznej analizy przyczynowości.

Opis:: The problem of causality is presented in the context of the research devoted to biogenesis. The significant works concerning the philosophy of biogenesis and scientific theories of abiogenesis have been reviewed. Special attention is paid to: (i) the role of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics and quantum mechanics in the explaining of causal relations involved the origins of life, (ii) the need of constructing of a quantum logic of life. It is suggested that the causal connection is established by an information channel between a cause and its result.

Analizuje dotychczas powstałe teorie kauzalności pod kątem logiczno-metodologicznym, a także z punktu widzenia zdobyczy nauk przyrodniczych. Dochodzi do wniosku, iż koncepcje przyczynowości powstałe na tej płaszczyźnie stanowią w istocie teorie odpowiedzialności karnej, a sama przyczynowość w prawie karnym ma charakter czysto normatywny, podobnie jak w przypadku przestępstw materialnych z zaniechania.
The author discusses ontological causality in criminal law. Theories of causality to date are analysed in terms of their logic and methodology, and in the light of natural sciences. It is concluded that conceptions of causality created on this plane constitute in fact theories of criminal liability, and causality itself in criminal law has a purely normative character, as in the case of offences with criminal consequences committed by omission.
