The paper discusses spatial modelling in Ellis James Davis’s Victorian utopia, Pyrna: A Commune; or, Under The Ice (1875) in the context of appropriating the Gothic mode into the utopian convention. In what follows, by examining selected aspects of the novella’s presented world, this article argues that the Gothic tropes of numinosity and sublime constitute significant elements of the examined narrative as major defamiliarizing components of the semiotically monolithic utopian spatial model.

Opis:: According to depth psychology, whose pioneer is C.G. Jung, inflation is an emotional state, most often triggered by a dream, manifested by an increase in sexual urge, a feeling of higher energy, power and fascination. Ego inflation can have a dual effect on the individual who experiences it: positive, which is associated with the possibility of establishing contact with archetypes as elements of the collective unconscious, and negative, leading to a sense of possession. In both cases, which often occur together, the key to understanding this unique state of psychic energy is contact with symbols, previously latent in the psychic genotype. In the creative process, as well as in crucial moments of life, the ego acquires the special privilege of insight into the unrecognised realms of the unconscious, which leads to a kind of emotional explosion, a feeling of ecstasy. The ego of the creator, stunned by new possibilities and filled with psychic energy, undergoes excessive growth, “swelling”. Carl Jung calls this state being possessed by the unconscious complex. In the case of Alexander Blok, one can speak of being possessed by the archetype of the Eternal Feminine – Anima, which is proven in the cycle Verses About the Beautiful Lady (1901–1902). The symbol of the Beautiful Lady unites within its archetypal structure various kinds of psychological oppositions (consciousness and unconsciousness, inner woman and inner man, ecstasy and fear). The Beautiful Lady as the numinous element of the poet’s psychic structure acquires the status of an energetic dominant or the centre of the unconscious.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i interpretacja poglądów estetycznych Władysława Stróżewskiego. Stróżewski buduje swoją estetykę na fundamencie klasycznej metafizyki, kontynuując jednocześnie tradycję fenomenologicznej refleksji nad sztuką. Rozszerzenie Ingardenowskiej teorii estetycznej o konkretyzację numinotyczną - zainspirowane w dużej mierze pracami Rudolfa Otto - sprawia, że ta nowa fenomenologiczna perspektywa transcenduje wąsko rozumianą "estetyczność" dzieła sztuki ku wymiarowi sacrum. Badanie nadestetycznego wymiaru sztuki wykazuje z kolei znaczące pokrewieństwo z estetyką teologiczną Hansa Ursa von Balthasara, dzięki czemu nabiera szczególnej aktualności we współczesnych debatach estetyczno-teologicznych. Stróżewski ukazuje przechodzenie od piękna estetycznego do piękna transcendentalnego, a następnie do sfery sacrum, w której fenomen numinosum objawia się jako Tajemnica.
The objective of the paper is a presentation and an interpretation of Władysław Stróżewski’s views on aesthetics. Built upon the foundation provided by classical metaphysics, Stróżewski’s aesthetics is simultaneously a continuation of the tradition of phenomenological interpretation of art. Stróżewski extends Roman Ingarden’s aesthetic theory by including the idea of numinous concretion, largely inspired by the works of Rudolf Otto. As a result, this new phenomenological perspective transcends the narrowly understood "aesthetics" of the work of art towards the inherent dimension of the sacred. Moreover, Stróżewski’s scrutiny of the aspect of art that goes beyond the aesthetic reveals an important relationship obtaining between his insights and the theological aesthetics of Hans Urs von Balthasar. Thus Stróżewski’s ideas turn out to be of significance to contemporary aesthetic and theological debates. In particular, he shows the movement of beauty from aesthetic to transcendental, and ultimately towards the sacred, where numinosum is manifested as Mystery

Opis:: Clive S. Lewis is thought to be one of the most important contemporary Christian apologist. In his works, Lewis argued against naturalism and put forward arguments in support of theism. In doing so, he referred to experience and made use of laws of logic and probabilistic reasoning, hence meeting rationality criteria. Part I discusses Lewis’s arguments from the existence of morality, reason, desires and numinous experiences. It presents a basal criticism of these arguments. Except of the ptresentation of those arguments and their analysis the aim of the paper is to provide a basis for a comparison (in Part II) of the anti-naturalistic arguments with what Lewis wrote about God, faith and life after death in the period following the passing of his wife, a great loss for the thinker.

Opis:: Belief is a mental state, its content being the statement of a certain state of affairs. With respect to the manner they arise, we divide beliefs into spontaneous and reflexive. When we take into consideration their bases, we speak about basic beliefs and beliefs derived from others. The terms “spontaneous belief” and “basic belief” have various meanings, but they are equivalent with regard to their range. Contemporary religious spontaneous and basic beliefs have various forms. In the Christian religion we speak, among other things, about numinous beliefs, as described by R. Otto, and A. Plantinga’s properly basic beliefs. According to Otto, numinous experiences (of that which is tremendum et fascinans) are a source of firm beliefs for man, i.e. he has had contacts with some objective manifestations of divinity. Plantinga (whose thinking belongs to a more “naturalistic” strain) writes about properly basic beliefs, such that arise spontaneously in man (if he is not depraved by sinful life) who remains under respective circumstances. Such beliefs are the grounds for theistic derivative beliefs. The arguments for the truthfulness of the beliefs of the first and second type bring forth a series of questions, and they are constantly discussed by philosophers of religion.

Opis:: This work aims to show that the emotions associated with experiencing art are analogous to those that arise during various religious experiences. One artistic field, which is painting, has been analyzed. The author based her concept on the philosophy drawn from the book "The Idea of the Holy" by Rudolf Otto and his idea of the numinous. At the same time the work presents a strictly scientific approach to the subject referring to such fields as neuroesthetics or color psychology. In order to present a comprehensive approach to the subject appropriate painting techniques evoking specific feelings in the recipient of the image were also described.
Niniejsza praca ma na celu wykazanie, że emocje towarzyszące obcowaniu ze sztuką są analogiczne do tych, które pojawiają się podczas różnorodnych doświadczeń religijnych. Analizie poddana została jedna dziedzina artystyczna jaką jest malarstwo. Autorka swoją koncepcję oparła na filozofii zaczerpniętej z książki ,,Świętość" Rudolfa Otto i jego idei numinosum. Jednocześnie praca przedstawia ściśle naukowe podejście do tematu odwołując się do takich dziedzin jak neuroestetyka, czy psychologia koloru. W celu wyczerpującego ujęcia tematu opisane zostały także odpowiednie techniki malarskie służące wywoływaniu konkretnych uczuć u odbiorcy obrazu.
