Opis:
This study was conducted to investigate toxic effects of Pb on growth and nutrient uptake in Black gram. Black gram was subjected to seven (5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 & 200 kg-1) levels of lead. Due to Pb toxicity, plant growth was adversely affected and relatively a severe reduction in root biomass was recorded. The Pb accumulation increased with the increase in lead concentrations. The uptake of different nutrients, i.e., N, P, K, Ca and Mg was reduced in black gram due to the lead treatment.

Opis:
There is still a controversy about the environmental impact of fishponds, especially on their ability to retain nutrients. This paper presents some basic rules of nutrient cycling in running and stagnant waters and the biotic and abiotic transformation of nutrients delivered to dam reservoirs and fishponds. Based on these common properties of eutrophic stagnant waters, some critical remarks are presented on papers that claim to prove the capacity of fishponds to retain nutrients (mainly nitrogen) during fish production and after pond drainage. Finally, some ways of reducing negative environmental impacts of fishpond effluents are described as an indirect evidence that such impacts really pose a threat to water quality.

Opis:
Despite the importance of calcium in many fruit species and the effects of calcium application, there is little or no reliable information on the effect of CaCl2 spray at different fruit development stages on the fruit mineral nutrient content during the growing season and at harvest. Therefore, this study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of calcium chloride (CaCl2, 15 g L-1) spray at different fruit development stages on the accumulation Ca and other macronutrients in cv. Hayward kiwifruit grown at two locations. In order to find the absorbality of Ca at different spraying times, fruits were harvested 7 days after a Ca treatment. Additionally, the mineral composition of kwifruit was determined at the stage of harvest ripeness. The results showed that the absorbality of Ca by kiwifruit from Ca spray decreased significantly with the progressing fruit development. The highest fruit Ca content was found when the fruit plants were sprayed at 35+80 DAFB and 35+80+120 DAFB, irrespectively of the location of an orchard. At a later Ca spraying application, the N content in kiwifruit significantly decreased, but the K and Mg content slightly increased. In contrast, the K/Ca, N/Ca, Mg/Ca and (K+Mg)/Ca ratios of CaCl2 sprayed fruits was lower than in the control and the ratio values were more balanced in the Ca treated fruit than in the control. Overall, three CaCl2 (15 g L-1) sprays could effectively improve the fruit quality by balancing the Ca ratio to other macronutrients. Therefore, Ca spray treatments could be a recommended treatment in growing cv. Hayward kiwifruit.

Opis:
Seasonal changes were investigated in concentrations of biogenic substances in the surface microlayer and subsurface water in ponds in the city of Słupsk (Northern Poland). Water samples from the surface microlayer were collected using the Garrett screen. Those water samples were analysed to determine concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. It was found that biogenic substances are accumulated in the surface microlayer to a greater extent than in the subsurface water layer. This accumulation is subjected to seasonal changes. The source of the analysed nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in the surface microlayer was connected with their concentration in subsurface water.
Badano sezonowe zmiany stężeń substancji biogenicznych w mikrowarstwie powierzchniowej i wodzie podpowierzchniowej w stawach w Słupsku (północna Polska). Próbki wody z mikrowarstwy powierzchniowej pobierano za pomocą siatki Garretta. W pozyskanych próbkach wody badano stężenie związków azotu i fosforu.

Opis:
Cypress (Cupressus funebris Endl.) is an important tree species in the subtropical regions of China; it is also a major tree species for afforestation and forest land restoration under low-fertility soil conditions. Cypress is considered a calcicolous tree, and its growth and development can be promoted significantly by exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) in the soil. However, most of the subtropical regions have low-fertility acidic soils, in which Ca2+ gradually becomes a limiting element for Cypress growth. In this study, different concentrations of Ca2+ fertilizer were added under fertile soil (3 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) and low-fertility soil (0 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) conditions. Cypress clones responded differently to Ca2+ addition in different soil conditions. The seedling height and dry matter quality of Cypress in fertile soil were significantly greater than those in low-fertility soil, but plant height and dry biomass did not differ significantly among Ca2+ treatments. The accumulation efficiencies of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and Ca all differed significantly among the Ca2+ treatments. In low-fertility soil, the addition of 3 g kg-1 Ca2+ significantly promoted development of roots 0.5–2 mm in diameter, and both the C1 and C2 clones achieved their highest N, P and Ca accumulation efficiencies. When the Ca2+ concentration increased to 6 g kg−1, the seedling height, dry matter quality and root development were lower than those of the 3 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. In the fertile soil, the addition of Ca2+ significantly inhibited development of roots 0.5–1 mm in diameter. The highest N accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 0 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment, and the highest Ca accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 6 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. Seedling height, root dry weight, roots 0–1.5 mm in diameter and Ca accumulation showed a significant interaction effect between NPK fertilizer and Ca2+. Therefore, Ca accumulation was more efficient in low-fertility soils. Under low-fertility soil conditions, the addition of CaSO4 can promote the root development of seedlings and advance and prolong the fast growth period of seedling height. Cypress clones can be used as an important tree species for afforestation under low-fertility soil conditions, especially under calcareous soil conditions.

Opis:
Forest phytocenoses (a fresh pine forest and a clearing) were fertilized with starch sewage containing organic and inorganic compounds. Fertilization influenced physico-chemical properties of the soil as well as structure and magnitude of plant production. Three groups of species differing with respect to their tolerance to enhanced quantities of available nutrients were found to occur: (1) oligotrophic species, e.g. Dicranum undulatum and Vaccinium vitis-idaea, (2) mezotrophic species, e.g. Vaccinium myrtillus and Trientalis europaea and (3) eutrophic species, e.g. Urtica dioica, Rubus idaeus and Stellaria media. Contents of eight analyzed biogenic elements (Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, S, Cl, N) in biomass of the investigated plant species were different. The total content of elements in biomass of ground vegetation at the control forest amounted to 40 kg ha-1, whereas in the fertilized area – to 116 kg ha-1 (ca. 3-fold increase). In the clear-cut control area, element content in biomass of ground flora was estimated to be 27 kg ha-1, while in the fertilized clearing – 60 kg ha-1 (ca. 2-fold increase).

Opis:
The research objective was to determine and compare dry matter, crude protein, mineral elements (total), dietary fiber, easily hydrolysable sugars, vitamin C, and minerals (K, Na, Mg, Cu) as well as the content of epicatechin and phenolic acids (homovanillic, chlorogenic, caffeic, coumaric, and ferulic) in the flesh and peel of ‘Šampion’ cv. apples grafted on 4 different rootstocks types: M.26, P2, M.9, and P22 in 2014–2015. The apples from trees grafted on the P22 rootstock had the highest content of dry matter, crude protein, fiber, easily hydrolysable sugars, and vitamin C. The highest mineral compound concentration was exhibited by apples from trees growing on rootstocks P22, P2, and M.9. The highest concentration of phenolic acids was determined in the peel of fruits from trees growing on P22 and M.9. The observations confirm that rootstocks characterized by the lowest growth rate (P22, M.9) ensure the highest accumulation of nutrients in ‘Šampion’ fruits.

Opis:
Chromium is a heavy metal; this element is considered as an environmental hazard. Toxicity effects of chromium on growth and development of plants including inhibition of germination process decrease of growth and biomass of plant. The aim of this research is to study accumulation of Chromium along with nutrients and its effect on the growth of Paddy plant (Oryza sativa L). Thus, paddy seedlings grown in petriplates lined with filter paper undergoing, different treatments of Cr (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 mg/L). After one week seedlings were removed and morpho physiological parameters like root length, shoot length and dry weight of plants and Biochemicals ,accumulation of nutrients along with Cr in roots and shoots were determined. The results indicated that the concentrations more than 100 mg/L chromium cause the reduction of morphophysiology parameters in the treatment plants rather than control plant and Cr addition in the cultures caused enhancement of chromium content in roots and shoots of plant seedlings. Similarly the biochemicals and nutrient accumulation also affected by increasing concentrations of chromium. It was also noted that accumulation of chromium in the roots was much higher than the shoots of the seedlings under treatment.

Opis:
This research evaluated rice growth and yield as well as Zn accumulation in both soil and grain under saline water irrigation conditions. The experiment consisted of a series of pots containing rice plants and paddy soil, with the application of irrigation treatments of five different salinity levels (1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 5‰ with a drip irrigation system). The results show that the salinity accumulation levels in soil can increase by up to 2.8‰ following the application of 5‰ salinity irrigation water during the development stages. Besides, this study also aimed to evaluate the influences of saline water irrigation on the observed rice yields, plant height, leaf length, and leaf width. In the results, irrigation with 3‰ saline water reduced potential rice yield by 58.6% and the length of rice leaves by one-third. Higher salinity of 4‰ in the irrigation water produced only 24% of average potential productivity, and 5‰ water salinity resulted in no yield. Furthermore, salt stress limited the mobile Zn content in paddy soil, reducing the Zn accumulation in grains by between 36.27% and 83.21%. Thus, the study shows that controlling salinity in irrigation water management is essential for controlling the yield and nutrient Zn content in rice grains.
