Opis:: There are many meanings of the term “dignity”: psychological, sociological, legal etc.,in this paperauthor concentrates on the ontic level. Dignity is person's “ontic value”, it points to three personal values: rationality (ability to recognise the truth), freedom (ability to self-determination) and love (ability to become a gift for another person). Ontic dignity is pre-moral, it is an “attribute” of human existence. Every person – and their dignity – is revealed by different forms of transcendence. The author focuses on the practical (pedagogical) aspect of dignity as well as the theological one. He derives from two concepts: creation of man in the “image of God” and Incarnation and redemption of man. These considerations refer to the thoughts of John Paul II, presentparticularlyin his book Memory and Identity.

Opis:: W artykule scharakteryzowano kilka typów godności człowieka. Podkreślono, iż spośród nich tylko godność ontyczna (osobowa) przysługuje każdemu człowiekowi z racji bycia osobą, w sposób bezwzględny. Godność osobowa nie jest jakością empiryczną człowieka; jest niestopniowalna, nieutracalna, niezmienna. Dostrzeżenie faktu godności osobowej człowieka jest zarazem rozpoznaniem powinności respektowania przysługujących mu praw, w tym najbardziej fundamentalnego: prawa do życia. Osobie od osoby należy się afirmacja dla niej samej – znaczy to, że osoba ludzka nigdy nie może być traktowana jedynie jako środek, lecz zawsze jako cel sam w sobie. Godność osobowa jest podstawą praw człowieka i wartością, do której odwołują się twórcy prawa pozytywnego. Wskazano na źródła ludzkiej godności osobowej, ukazano racje uzasadniające powinność jej respektowania i implikacje faktu godności osoby ludzkiej w obszarze pedagogiki społecznej. Pozostałe typy godności nie są wartościami wrodzonymi ani niezmiennymi. Godność osobowościową zawdzięczamy własnej aktywności moralnej; godność osobista jest kategorią psychologiczną i sprowadza się do poczucia własnej wartości; godność społeczna oznacza status społeczny. Wskazano, że głównymi przyczynami naruszania ludzkiej godności jest samozniewolenie poprzez poddanie prawdy o sobie swojej niczym nieskrępowanej wolności i instrumentalne traktowanie człowieka.
The article characterises several conceptions of human dignity. It argues that, of these, only ontic (personal) dignity is inherent to every human being by virtue of their personhood and is bestowed unconditionally. Personal dignity is not an empirical quality; it is non-degradable, irreducible, and immutable. Recognition an individual’s personal dignity necessitates the recognition of the duty to respect their rights, including the most fundamental: the right to life. Personal dignity must be affirmed for its own sake – the human person must never be treated merely as a means to an end, but always as an end in themselves. This worth forms the basis of human rights and serves as a core value for positive law. The article explores the sources of human personal dignity, the justifications for respecting it and its implications for social pedagogy. Other forms of dignity are neither innate nor unchangeable. Acquired dignity arises from one’s own moral actions; personal dignity is a psychological phenomenon akin to self-esteem; social dignity denotes social status. The article indicates that the principle causes of violations of human dignity are self-enslavement through relinquishment of self-knowledge to one’s unfettered freedom and the instrumentalization of human beings.

Opis:: The author makes an attempt to analyze the anthropological views of Mieczysław A. Krąpiec in order to show the reasons why some elements of the structure of man as a person—resulting from the human mode of access to truth, goodness, beauty and religion—are essentially significant for determining the common good that lies at the foundation of all forms of human social life. He analyzes such parts of the human person’s structure as intellectual knowledge, will for the good, love, religion, personal dignity, ontic completeness and legal subjectivity.
