Opis:
The first occurrence of the conodont Ancyrodella rotundiloba has been used extensively for correlating the Middle-Up per Devonian (Givetian-Frasnian) boundary in sections worldwide despite many arguments as to its precise taxonomic definition. These arguments are summarised herein and three ontogenetic series illustrated from three samples across the Givetian-Frasnian boundary within the Vorota Formation of the Kozhym River section, Sub-Polar Urals, Russia. General trends within the three ontogenetic series suggest that the ratio of basal pit width to platform width in Ancyrodella pristina, and Ancyrodella recta in creases through ontogeny but the morphology of lateral secondary keel extensions to the basal pit remains constant and is a useful taxonomic feature. Folds and collars on the basal surface occur only in the later stages of development. The out line of the platform within species is variable and controlled by the formation of incipient nodes in juveniles; gerontic specimens can also have very variable platform out lines. Measure ments of platform width to basal pit width ratios and platform shape out lines may not therefore be a good way to compare between species. The three ontogenetic series provide typical late Givetian and early Frasnian examples and increase the potential for correlation of the Middle-Upper Devonian boundary particularly using juvenile Ancyrodella specimens.

Opis:
A Chinese population of Oxytricha nauplia Berger et Foissner, 1987 was recently discovered from the surface soil in the Kuisu Valley, Huhhot, China. Its morphology corresponds well with that of the original population in the body size and shape, the absence of cortical granules, two macronuclear nodules and two micronuclei. Both morphogenesis during binary fission and small subunit of ribosomal gene (SSU rDNA) of the species were first investigated. Though earlier dividers are unavailable for this species, morphogenesis almost proceeds as in congeners by given stages. The SSU rDNA sequence of O. nauplia is 1728 bp long and has a DNA G+C content of 45.72%. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Oxytricha nauplia grouped with O. paragranulifera first with high support, and then clustered into a subclade including Onychodromopsis flexilis, Paroxytricha ottowi, Paroxytricha longigranulosa and Rigidothrix goiseri, which branched off most congeners, but clustered into the Oxytrichidae clade.

Opis:
A brackish water euplotid ciliate, Uronychia xinjiangensis n. sp., was discovered in a ditch in Yuli County, Xinjiang, China. Its morphology, ciliature and morphogenesis were investigated based on specimens examined in vivo and following protargol staining. The new species is characterized by the posterior part of the adoral zone composed of three membranelles, which has never been seen in all other known congeners. Other morphologic features include: (i) body oval-shaped, with conspicuous right anterior spur-like protrusion;(ii)size in vivo 60–90 × 40–68 μm; (iii) two macronuclear nodules; (iv) four frontal, two ventral, five transverse, three left marginal and three caudal cirri. Its morphogenesis proceeds in a usual way, except that the oral primordium forms only three proximal membranelles rather than four proximal membranelles within congeners. The small subunit rRNA gene of the new species (GenBank accession number: KX147287) comprises 1723 bp and 44.63% GC content, and differs by 0.12–1.81% from those of congeners. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequence data reveal that Uronychia xinjiangensis n. sp. clusters with other Uronychia species with full support, which supports the monophyly of the genus Uronychia Stein, 1859.

Opis:
“Pan-dichoporites” (new informal term) is proposed to unite Cambrian blastozoans, such as Cambrocrinus, Ridersia, and Sanducystis, glyptocystitoid and hemicosmitoid rhombiferans, coronates, blastoids, and Lysocystites. Pan-dichoporite ambulacra have double biserial main axes with brachiole facets shared by pairs of floor (glyptocystitoids), side (blastoid) or trunk (hemicosmitoids, coronates) plates. These axial plates are the first two brachiolar plates modified to form the ambulacral axes. In glyptocystitoids the first brachiole facet in each ambulacrum is shared by an oral and another plate. Hence, these are also two modified brachiolar plates and part of the axial skeleton under the Extraxial Axial Theory (EAT). Pan-dichoporites are also characterized by thecae composed of homologous plate circlets. The unique glyptocystitoid genus Rhombifera bears ambulacral facets on five radial plates, which alternate with five orals. The oral area of Lysocystites (blastoid sensu lato) is very similar, which suggests that rhombiferan radials are homologous with “ambulacrals” of Lysocystites and hence with blastoid lancet plates. This implies derivation of blastoids from glyptocystitoids and suggests that blastoid and coronate radials and deltoids are homologous with rhombiferan infralaterals and laterals. Thus, homologous plate circlets occur in all pan-dichoporites, which strengthens the validity of a pan-dichoporite clade. Under Universal Elemental Homology (UEH), deltoids were homologized with rhombiferan orals, but this is inconsistent with the EAT. Deltoids bear respiratory pore structures and so are perforate extraxial skeletal plates, whereas rhombiferan orals are axial skeleton. The new plate homologies also explain why only five plates form the oral frames of coronates, blastoids and Lysocystites, whereas glyptocystitoids (except Rhombifera) have six oral frame plates; all glyptocystitoids have only five laterals. Hemicosmitoids arose by paedomorphic ambulacral reduction, but the paedomorphosis also affected the thecal plates and stem. Paedomorphosis poses special problems for cladistic character analysis, since the new characters often appear to be plesiomorphic.

Opis:
Trilobites achieved their maximum generic diversity in the Cambrian, but the peak of morphological disparity of their cranidia occurred in the Middle to Late Ordovician. Early to middle Cambrian trilobites with a specialized cephalon are rare, especially among the ptychoparioids, a group of libristomates featuring the so-called “generalized” bauplan. Here we describe an unusual ptychopariid trilobite Phantaspis auritus gen. et sp. nov. from the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) Mantou Formation in the Shandong Province, North China. This new taxon is characterized by a cephalon with an extended anterior area of double-lobate shape resembling a pair of rabbit ears in later ontogenetic stages; a unique type of cephalic specialization that has not been reported from other trilobites. Such a peculiar cephalon as in Phantaspis provides new insights into the variations of cephalic morphology in middle Cambrian trilobites, and may represent a heuristic example of ecological specialization to predation or an improved discoidal enrollment.

Opis:
Late Valanginian (Early Cretaceous) lamellaptychi of the genus Mortilletilamellaptychus were collected from seven ammonite-controlled sections in south-eastern France demonstrate distinct changes in ribbing during growth. Simpler juvenile ribbing, which is essentially uniform for all of the specimens studied, differs distinctly from the complicated arrangement of the adult ribs. Changes in ribbing morphology were observed in the five species studied, two of which were identified as new (i.e. Mortilletilamellaptychus heterocostatus sp. nov. and M. bicostatus sp. nov.).
