Opis:
The problem of opacity presents a challenge for generative phonology. This paper examines the process of Nasal Assimilation in Polish rendered opaque by the process of Vowel Deletion in Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993), which currently is a dominating model for phonological analysis. The opaque interaction of the two processes exposes the inadequacy of standard Optimality Theory arising from the fact that standard OT is a non-derivational theory. It is argued that only by introducing intermediate levels can Optimality Theory deal with complex cases of opaque interactions.

Opis:
A linguistic theory reaches explanatory adequacy if it arrives at a linguistically-appropriate grammar based on the kind of input available to children. In phonology, we assume that children can succeed even when the input consists of surface evidence alone, with no corrections or explicit paradigmatic information – that is, in learning from distributional evidence. We take the grammar to include both a lexicon of underlying representations and a mapping from the lexicon to surface forms. Moreover, this mapping should be able to express optionality and opacity, among other textbook patterns. This learning challenge has not yet been addressed in the literature. We argue that the principle of Minimum Description Length (MDL) offers the right kind of guidance to the learner – favoring generalizations that are neither overly general nor overly specific – and can help the learner overcome the learning challenge. We illustrate with an implemented MDL learner that succeeds in learning various linguistically-relevant patterns from small corpora.

The essay explores whether concealing humanness or emphasizing humanness is a more effective strategy for anti-drone activism that seeks to disrupt the conventional epistemologies of militarized surveillance. Building on Édouard Glissant’s decolonizing philosophy of relation and more recent theories of gender and surveillance such as Rachel Hall’s notion of “animal opacity,” the essay argues that poetry is one place we might find an answer to what seems like a binary problem of seeing versus unseeing humanity in technologically mediated aerial warfare. I illustrate that the 2016 poetry collection LOOK by Solmaz Sharif intervenes to suggest activism that steers readers away from the logics of recognition and toward the ethical potential of concealment. LOOK garners formal elements from lyric and experimental poetry traditions to employ a strategy of resistance-looking based in multiple valences of opacity.multiple valences of opacity.

For Gaston Gross, a rigorous study of the language means describing all the uses of lexical units of the language within the framework of free combinatorics, by determining the argumental paradigms involved in the schemes of arguments for predicates and all the appropriate predicates for arguments. This approach is complemented by a description of frozen sequences whose internal combinatoriality is more or less restricted. The author devotes his work of 1996 and part of his textbook of 2012 to this subject. Our contribution highlights the great richness of the author’s thoughts particularly from a heuristic point of view. We start from the concepts of predicate, frozeness, polylexicality and semantic opacity to show how much impact Gaston Gross’s methodological suggestions have had on the development of the discipline of linguistics.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by a highly contagious novel coronavirus, has seen a rapid surge of cases over the past 6 months spreading to more than 215 countries and posing a global threat to mankind. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from pharyngeal swabs is considered the gold standard for diagnosis of this disease. Portable chest radiography (CXR), point of care ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) are crucial modalities in diagnosis and follow-up. Portable CXR can help in patients who are clinically unstable, and also to prevent the cumbersome process of steriliastion after every CT scan. However, chest CT is useful as a problem-solving tool, to look for progression and complications associated with the disease. In a few cases, in our experience (as has also been documented by others), RT-PCR was negative in early disease, and CT chest was able to detect the radiological findings raising suspicion of COVID-19. With this pictorial review, we aim to describe and illustrate the typical, and a few atypical, radiological findings of this disease.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of examination of particulate matter emission from the Diesel engine FPT 1.3 MJT simultaneously fuelled with diesel oil and natural gas CNG. The basic premise for engine adaptation was the addition of a small amount of CNG to reduce exhaust gas opacity and particulate matter emission. At this assumption, diesel oil remained the basic fuel, with contribution amounting to 0,70-0,85 of total energy delivered to the engine. The dual fuel engine was examined using an original controller installed in the Diesel engine FPT 1.3 MJT which controlled the diesel fuel dose. The dose of the injected natural gas was controlled by changing the opening time of gas injectors at constant pressure in the gas collector. The examined issues included the exhaust gas opacity, and the total number and fractional distribution of the emitted particles. The measurements were performed at twenty selected measuring points corresponding to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test. The performed tests have demonstrated a positive effect of gas addition on exhaust gas opacity and particulate matter emission. Depending on test conditions, the exhaust gas opacity was reduced by 10÷92%, and the total number of particles by 30÷40%. The performed tests have revealed that a small addition of gas can reduce the load of the DPF filter, extend its lifetime, and increase engine reliability. Longer time intervals between successive DPF filter regenerations improve ecological properties of the engine.

Opis:
Morphological change is not a result of mechanical, predictable processes, but of the behavior of language users. Speakers reinterpret opaque data in order to assign a more transparent structure to them. Subsequently successful reinterpretation may form the basis of new derivations. The moment such a derivative word formation process becomes productive a language change has taken place. In addition, this paper shows how language change obscures the distinction between separate morphological processes such as compounding and derivation and thus between morphological categories. Moreover, the data under discussion show that there is not a preferred natural direction of language change. Most of the examples are taken from English and Dutch, but also a few French, Frisian, German and Afrikaans data are discussed.

Opis:
The subject of analysis in the article is the 2015 British film 45 Years (dir. Andrew Haigh), which is an adaptation of David Constantine’s novel In Another Country. The film presents an intimate image that, in a subtle way, talks about the complexity of feelings of love, constantly oscillate between the desire for intimate closeness and exclusiveness, and the fear of disappointment (longing for emotional fullness and a sense of failure). Inscribing the problem of the dialectical complexity of the emotional life of a man in the context of old age and transience seems unconventional and, therefore, particularly valuable in this film. An important theme in 45 Years, emphasised by the title itself, is the past; invisible on a daily basis, it lurks under the surface of the present. Its iconic (though only imaginary) representation is connected with the plot of the first, lost fiancée of the hero, whose remains – after half a century – are unexpectedly found on a Swiss glacier. The author of the article argues that the fact that it concerns a young woman’s body (preserved in a transparent substance in a strange coincidence), by virtue of intertextual implications, brings an archetypal element to the essentially prosaic story; this archetypal element has then far-reaching consequences in the symbolic plan of the film. Skilful reference to the fairy-tale motif of the ‘glass coffin’ allowed the British director forportraying in this audio-visual story, which talks about the emotional dramas of two elderly people, an image of these internal experiences that in their intimate subtlety remain impenetrable and inexpressible.

Opis:
The article presents the bench testing results of a four stroke, four cylinder, direct injection, unmodified, naturally aspirated diesel engine operating on neat rapeseed oil (RO) and its 2.5vol% (ERO2.5) and 7.5vol percent (ERO7.5) blends with ethanol. The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of ethanol inclusion in the RO and preheating temperature on bio-fuel viscosity, engine brake power, specific fuel consumption, break thermal efficiency and emission composition changes, especially NO, NO2, NOx, CO, CO2, HC and smoke opacity of the exhausts. Inclusion in the RO 2.5 and 7.5vol% of ethanol the blend viscosity at ambient temperature of 20 centigrade diminishes by 9.2 and 28.3%. During operation under constant air-to-fuel equivalence ratio gamma = 1.6, blends ERO2.5 and ERO7.5 ensure the brake mean effective pressure (bmep) lower at the maximum torque 1800 min-1 by 0.5 and 2.3% (bmep=0.770 mpa) and at rated 2200 min1 speed by 2.4 and 9.1% (bmep=0.740 mpa), correspondingly, than that of neat RO case. The bsfc at maximum torque (248.7 g/kwh) and rated power (247.5 g/kwh) for blends ERO2.5 and ERO7.5 is higher by 1.3-4.4% and 4.2-10.7% and the brake thermal efficiency lower by 0.5-1.5% and 3.3-7.6%, respectively. The tests revealed that during operation of the fully loaded engine at rated 2200 min-1 speed, ethanol inclusion in the RO up to 7.5vol% diminishes NO, nox, HC, CO2 emissions, smoke opacity and temperature of the exhausts however it may increase simultaneously NO2, NO2/NOx and CO emissions.

Opis:
The article discusses the effect of fuel dose division in the Diesel engine on smoke opacity and composition of the emitted exhaust gas. The research activities reported in the article include experimental examination of a small Diesel engine with Common Rail type supply system. The tests were performed on the engine test bed equipped with an automatic data acquisition system which recorded all basic operating and control parameters of the engine, and smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas. The parameters measured during the engine tests also included the indicated pressure and the acoustic pressure. The tests were performed following the pre-established procedure in which 9 engine operation points were defined for three rotational speeds: 1500, 2500 and 3500 rpm, and three load levels: 25, 40 and 75 Nm. At each point, the measurements were performed for 7 different forms of fuel dose injection, which were: the undivided dose, the dose divided into two or three parts, and three different injection advance angles for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. The discussion of the obtained results includes graphical presentation of contests of hydrocarbons, carbon oxide, and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, and its smoke opacity. The presented analyses referred to two selected cases, out of nine examined engine operation points. In these cases the fuel dose was divided into three parts and injected at the factory set control parameters. The examination has revealed a significant effect of fuel dose division on the engine efficiency, and on the smoke opacity and composition of the exhaust gas, in particular the content of nitrogen oxides. Within the range of low loads and rotational speeds, dividing the fuel dose into three parts clearly improves the overall engine efficiency and significantly decreases the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. Moreover, it slightly decreases the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. In the experiment the contents of nitrogen oxides markedly increased with the increasing injection advance angle for the undivided dose and that divided into two parts. This, in turn, led to the decrease of the contents of hydrocarbons and carbon oxide. Fuel dose division into two and three parts leads to the increase of smoke opacity of the exhaust gas, compared to the undivided dose.
