Opis:: The paper presents a new method of crisp and fuzzy interval comparison (ordering). The method is based on the probabilistic approach and the representation of fuzzy numbers as ordered a-level sets. It allows all the cases of interval location and overlapping to be taken into account, including the ordering of intervals and real numbers. Additionally, the method implicitly allows the widths of intervals to be used in ordering procedures. It should be noted that the probabilistic approach was employed only to infer the set of formulas needed to estimate quantitatively the degree to which one interval is less than or equal to another interval. However, the measure of this value may be treated as probability. Some simple examples are also presented to illustrate the technique's practical efficiency.

Opis:: The partial ordering induced by the Loewner partial ordering on the convex cone comprising all matrices which multiplied by a given positive definite matrix become nonnegative definite is considered. Its relation to orderings which are induced by the Loewner partial ordering of the squares of matrices is presented. Some extensions of the latter orderings and their comparison to star orderings are given.

Opis:: In this paper, we introduce a new family of univariate continuous distributions called the Gamma Kumaraswamy-generated family of distributions. Most of its properties are studied in detail, including skewness, kurtosis, analytical comportments of the main functions, moments, stochastic ordering and order statistics. The next part of the paper focuses on a particular member of the family with four parameters, called the gamma Kumaraswamy exponential distribution. Among its advantages, the following should be mentioned: the corresponding probability density function can have symmetrical, left-skewed, right-skewed and reversed-J shapes, while the corresponding hazard rate function can have (nearly) constant, increasing, decreasing, upside-down bathtub, and bathtub shapes. Subsequently, the inference on the gamma Kumaraswamy exponential model is performed. The method of maximum likelihood is applied to estimate the model parameters. In order to demonstrate the importance of the new model, analyses on two practical data sets were carried out. The results proved more favourable for the studied model than for any of the other eight competitive models.

Opis:: In taxonomy, various methods of the data normalization are used. They can significantly affect the result of the classification. This article presents the analysis of the impact of the methods of the data normalization on the result of linear ordering. The following methods and tools are used in this research: standardization, Weber’s standardization, unitization, zero unitization with zero minimum and selected quotient transformation. A statement comparing the methods used in the study of classification is formulated. In the research data concerning innovation of European Union regions from Eurostat are used.
W taksonomicznych badaniach empirycznych spotyka się różne formuły transformacji normalizacyjnej. Często pomija się fakt, iż jej wybór może istotnie wpływać na wynik klasyfikacji. W artykule zaprezentowano rezultaty eksperymentu badawczego, którego celem była analiza wpływu różnych procedur normalizacyjnych na wynik porządkowania liniowego obiektów. W pracy wykorzystano między innymi takie formuły normalizacyjne jak: standaryzacja, standaryzacja Webera, unitaryzacja, unitaryzacja zerowa oraz wybrane przekształcenia ilorazowe. Następnie dokonano komparacji otrzymanych wyników. Procedurę badawczą oparto o dane zaczerpnięte z bazy Eurostat, które dotyczyły innowacyjności regionów Unii Europejskiej. Zjawisko innowacyjności regionów zostało scharakteryzowane poprzez szereg cech, których realizacje były dostępne na poziomie badanych jednostek terytorialnych.

Opis:: The microstructure and ordering of alfa-FeCo phase of the nanocrystalline Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 6, 25 or 41.5) alloys were investigated. We have stated that á-FeCo phase is atomically ordered in the Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 25 or 41.5) samples crystallized by the heat treatment in a furnace. However, after flash annealing (by current or laser) that phase is disordered. Moreover, we have found that Co concentration in the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase strongly depends on Co content in the as-quenched ribbons. The annealing conditions influence also the grain diameter of the crystalline phase. In the nanocrystalline alloys obtained by a flash annealing of the amorphous ribbons finer grains are present.

Tytuł:: Epistemic "must" in Japanese : the case of modals "hazu" and "ni chigainai"

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to analyse semantics of two Japanese modals of epistemic necessity: "hazu" and "ni chigainai". The analysis shows that although both are of the same type and force, their semantics differs. While "hazu" seems to be a modal conveying certainty based on credible premises, "ni chigainai" is connected with premises loosely, and tends to be used as a modal expressing strong belief. Thus I propose to treat the latteras a modal of possibility that takes a shape of necessity on the surface level.

Opis:: Stępniak [Linear Algebra Appl. 151 (1991)] considered the problem of equivalence of the Löwner partial order of nonnegative definite matrices and the Löwner partial order of squares of those matrices. The paper was an important starting point for investigations of the problem of how an order between two matrices A and B from different sets of matrices can be preserved for the squares of the corresponding matrices A² and B², in the sense of the Löwner partial ordering, the star partial ordering, the minus partial ordering, and the sharp partial ordering. Many papers have since been published (mostly coauthored by J.K. Baksalary - to whom the present paper is dedicated) that generalize the results in two directions: by widening the class of matrices considered and by replacing the squares by arbitrary powers. In the present paper we make a résumé of some of these results and suggest some further generalizations for polynomials of the matrices considered.

Opis:: Inspiracją do zawartych w tekście rozważań jest twórczość Oswalda Mathiasa Ungersa, architekta, który szczególnie podkreślał potrzebę poszukiwania porządku w architekturze. Dwa projekty domów w mieście jego autorstwa to przykłady architektury podporządkowanej ścisłym zasadom geometrii. Geometrii traktowanej jako siły porządkującej rzeczywistość. Wyobrażony, abstrakcyjny świat Ungersa zmaterializowany w fizycznych budowlach jest dowodem na nieprzemijalną wartość architektury odwołującej się do rygorystycznych zasad kompozycyjnych.
The inspiration for the following considerations is the architectural and theoretical output of Oswald Mathias Ungers, an architect who specifically emphasized the need for order in architecture. Two projects for housing in the city by him have been chosen examples of architecture subjected to strict rules of geometry. Geometry is treated as the force organizing reality. This imaginary, abstract world of Ungers’ is materialized in physical structures, and can be considered as proof of long-lasting value of architecture adhering to the stringent rules of composition.
