Opis:
Constitutive modeling of the NANOS-BA® steel is described in this article. Results of the experiments (quasi-static uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression, high strain rate compression with use of the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) are shown. On the basis of the experiments results, the values of constants of the Johnson-Cook (J-C) model for the NANOS-BA® steel were determined. Verification of the determined values of constants was described, in which the stresses and strains obtained in samples in experiments and simulations were compared. The additional verification of the determined parameter values was the comparison of the depth of penetration tests (DP tests) results of NANOS-BA® steel plates placed on the Armox 500T „witness” plate fired with a 12.7 mm B-32 projectile, obtained experimentally and in simulations. Small differences between simulation and the experiments results testify that the determined values of constants of J-C model for NANOS-BA® steel provide good agreement with experiments.

Opis:
Described in this paper is the analysis of the applicability of NANOS-BA steel for armour. The results of depth of penetration (DP) tests of the NANOS-BA steel plates placed on the Armox 600T „witness” plate and fired at with the 12.7 mm B-32 type projectile are shown. These results are compared to the Al2O3 ceramic plate penetration with the use of the same method. In both cases the armour was of similar area density (approx. 39 kg/m2). The theoretical analysis of the applicability of the NANOS-BA steel in a layered armour was conducted and numerical simulations of the DP tests were performed. Additional simulations were made for two variants of layered armour penetration: in variant 1 - One of the layers in construction was of the NANOS-BA steel, in variant 2 - One of the layers was of special ceramics. The process of the simulations verification is described, in which the deformations of the „witness” plate obtained experimentally are compared to the results of the simulations. Small differences (< 2 mm) of penetration were obtained in the simulations and experimentally confirmed that the simulations were performed correctly.

Opis:
Process of building and the validation of the numerical models of the B-32 type armour-piercing incendiary (API) projectile is described in this article. Results of projectile compression tests (static and under high strain rates with the use of the modified Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) are shown. On the basis of this, the values of the Johnson–Cook (J–C) strength model parameters for the projectile core material (N12e steel) were determined. This article presents results gained from simulations of the tests, in which the B-32 type projectile was modelled with the use of determined values of the J–C strength and failure models parameters. The process of the parameters values verification was described, in which the stress and strain obtained from samples in experiments and simulations were compared. Additional verification of the determined parameters values was comparison to the depth of penetration (DP) tests results of the Armox 500T plates fired with the 12.7 mm B-32 type projectile, obtained experimentally and in simulations. Small differences (< 5%) between stress and penetration depths obtained in the simulations and in the tests showed that the J–C parameter values were determined correctly.

Opis:
In accordance with applicable standards: PN-EN 12568:2011 and PN-EN ISO 20344:2012, anti-penetration inserts and footwear outsole anti-penetration inserts are tested at penetration velocity (10 ± 3) mm/min, with a test nail of (4 50 ± 0.05) mm in diameter and a conical tip with a truncation of 1 mm and an angle of 30o. This velocity is relatively low compared to penetration velocity when walking vigorously. The diameter of the test nail also exceeds diameters of most nails used in industry. Users' contact with sharp objects potentially present on the ground at a worksite is usually more dynamic. It is important for footwear and the inserts to ensure workers' safety. The Footwear Laboratory aimed to determine the effect of penetration velocity and test nail dimensions on the protective capacity of inserts. It also evaluated the quality of these items.

Opis:
In technical publications and European Standards the development time (i.e. time of getting out of penetrant from a discontinuity to the material surface) in penetration testing is specified within the range of 10-30 minutes. In practice, however, it is seen , that it is closely connected with the material type and ranges from several minutes to 24 hours. In the literature, only interactions coming from the penetrant are described, whereas those from the material under testing, i.e. the influence of material factors on adhesion between penetrant and material, are not taken into consideration. In this connection, it has been described precisely in the paper the adhesion phenomenon and also it has been indicated the other factors affecting the development time. Recapitulating the adhesion theories presented in the paper, it can be formulated two fundamental circumstances which must occur that adhesion joint may be formed, namely: the approach of the particles of two solids to the distance less than 0,9 nm while the high attractive force occurring between molecules should be connected with possibly low potential energy of the bond formed in this way.

The paper is the continuation of the previous one entitled “Material factors in relation to development time in liquid-penetrant inspection. Part 1. Material factors” in which the material factors influencing essentially the development time in penetrant testing have been marked out. These are: type of material, surface roughness and imperfection width. In the paper it has been described how to prepare the factorial plan which will enable to test every factor with taking into account its different values. Moreover, it has been presented investigations on natural cracks, their width and roughness profile what will allow to assign suitable values of independent variables to the factorial plan. The purpose of the plan prepared in such a way will be the determination of the influence of the material kind, surface roughness and discontinuity width on the development time in penetrant testing.

Opis:
The article presents the results of tests aimed at detecting discontinuities in the subsurface layer of elements intended for further processing. For the initial identification of discontinuities, the method of computed tomography was used. Based on the tomographic images of selected typical defects and measurements of the electrical conductivity of the material, the parameters for the eddy current tests were determined. A series of discontinuities in the subsurface layer to a depth of about 0.48 mm were detected. This allowed, at a given stage of machining, relevant elements to be selected for further processing.

Opis:
Explosive reactive armour (ERA) is widely used to protect military vehicles against shaped charges and kinetic projectiles, but the use of the ERA element with metal plates is potentially hazardous to the surroundings. A patent claim has recently been issued on explosive reactive armour without metal plates. The non-metallic ERA consists of an explosive, a heavy metal powder and a binder. The aim of the present work was to experimentally test the effectiveness of such armour for disrupting cumulative jets. HMX was used as the explosive matrix and RTV silicone as the binder. Tungsten (W) powder was added to the explosive. The disruption of the cumulative jet was assessed on the basis of X-ray images, the number and size of holes in a steel plate, which was placed under the shaped charge, and the penetration depth of a steel target. It was shown that reactive armour consisting of HMX and W powder was effective in dispersing the cumulative jet, especially for a small impact angle (30°). The influence of the W particle size and the content of the W powder in the armour on jet were investigated. Finally, the effectiveness of one of the tested reactive armours was compared with that of classic reactive armour with steel plates.
