Opis:: Governments make assumptions about immigrants and then craft policies based on those assumptions to yield what they hope will be effective naturalisation outcomes: state security and trustworthy citizens. This study examines the thoughts, experiences and opinions about citizenship and civic engagement, drawing on a dataset of 150 one-hour interviews with permanent residents and naturalised citizens in New York and Berlin in 2004–2010 and again 2016–2020. It includes those who have naturalised or hold immigration statuses necessary for naturalisation (i.e., those who can and will naturalise, those who can but will not naturalise and those rejected for naturalisation or who do not meet eligibility requirements). I explore how immigrants participate as citizens and privileged non-citizens. My findings include the fact that immigrants define civic engagement – what ‘citizen’ participation means and who participates – more broadly and narrowly than anticipated. Immigrant perceptions of naturalisation and what becoming a citizen meant to them, and how naturalisation personally affected modes of participation. Defensive citizenship stimulated naturalisation but was deemed insufficient in contemporary New York and Berlin to protect immigrants and their engagement. State-designed naturalisation processes ignore immigrants’ perspectives and performative modes of citizenship and, thus, ineffectively select the citizens states say they want.

WOMEN CITIZENS ON THE BARRICADES! Social happening as a tool for building civic subjectivity

Opis:: This resaerch rehearse to take an analytical look at new forms of civic participation - how they take place, how they use both materialand non-material space, and how it enables the building of civic subjectivity of those involved. Accordingly, the civic art activities that I incorporated into my work took place from 22.10.2020 to 08.03.2021 as part of the Women's Strikes. Achieving the assumed research goal was possible thanks to, among other things, the basis of research on the theories of performative citizenship, civil disobedience, and civic artistic activities - and in particular, social happening. With the help of online observation and semiological analysis of visual materials, I collected the right amount of empirical material to be able to successfully achieve the intended purpose of the study. During the analysis of the collected photographs presenting social happenings, I managed to establish that their inclusion in the repertoire of resistance enables the subjective involvement of people who had been excluded and marginalized so far. Moreover, due to the diversity in the choice of the form of resistance diagnosed in the research process, it is possible with their help to raise many issues and to address numerous areas of contestation. Paying attention to artistic forms of engagement (social happenings) prompts researchers to reflect on classical theories of citizenship and to re-model the framework of what and how can be a method of its implementation.
Praca ta stanowi próbę analitycznego spojrzenia na nowe formy partycypacji – na to w jaki sposób przebiegają, w jaki sposób wykorzystują zarówno przestrzeń materialną, jak i niematerialną oraz w jaki sposób pozwala to na budowanie podmiotowości obywatelskiej osób zaangażowanych. Obywatelskie działania artystyczne, które włączyłam do mojej pracy odbywały się od 22.10.2020 do 08.03.2021 roku w ramach Protestów Kobiet. Stało się to możliwe między innymi dzięki oparciu badania na teoriach performatywnego obywatelstwa, nieposłuszeństwa obywatelskiego oraz obywatelskich działań artystycznych – a w szczególności happeningu społecznego. Przy pomocy obserwacji online i semiologicznej analizy materiałów wizualnych zebrałam odpowiednią ilość materiału empirycznego, aby móc z pozytywnym skutkiem osiągnąć zamierzony cel badania. W czasie trwania analizy zebranych fotografii przedstawiających happeningi społeczne, udało mi się ustalić, że ich włączenie w repertuar oporu umożliwia podmiotowe zaangażowanie osób do tej pory wykluczanych oraz marginalizowanych. Co więcej, ze względu na zdiagnozowaną w procesie badawczym różnorodność w zakresie wyboru formy oporu, przy ich pomocy możliwe jest poruszanie wielu problemów oraz podejmowanie licznych obszarów wymagających kontestacji. Zwrócenie uwagi na artystyczne formy zaangażowania (happeningi społeczne) skłania badaczy i badaczki do refleksji nad klasycznymi teoriami obywatelstwa i obywatelskości oraz ponownego modelowania ram tego, co i w jaki sposób może stanowić metodę jego realizacji.

Women in Iranian Kurdistan have developed tactics for creating art and literature that empowers them to fi ght for their rights as women and as Kurds. “Doing art” invites them to cross the border between fictional and real, private and public, and to create negotiations with the patriarchal society and legal system that oppresses them.
