The 2019 season at 'Marea' is a continuation of the research excavation started the year before. The goal is to determine the date of foundation and using all the structures visible on the site and to use trial trenches to find the remains of habitation below those structures. Remains dated in the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamic periods were found in nine trenches. The oldest remains are a series of locally-manufactured amphorae, discovered under one of the Byzantine buildings in the northern part of the site. The entire eastern waterfront was uncovered, along with the adjacent latrines, streets and buildings which are presumed to be residential. The structures which were examined were very regularly formed and involved large-scale earthworks. They were built no earlier than the mid-6th century A.D., and, although their purpose sometimes changed, they remained in use until about the mid-8th century A.D.

Opis:
In the desert regions of the Southern Levant, the dating of Nabataean sherds and vessels is a critical factor in determining the dates of archaeological strata, architecture, and even entire sites. In recent years, archaeologists working at Petra and related sites have tended to date most Nabataean sherds and vessels to the 1st century CE based on the proposed typo-chronology of the Swiss–Liechtenstein excavations at al-Zantur in Petra, published by Stephan G. Schmid (2000). Accepted typo-chronologies must withstand scrutiny and can override imposed historical frameworks. However, an uncritical reliance on the ez-Zantur chronology has created an artificial gap in the material record of Petra and other Nabataean sites in the post-annexation period, that is to say, the 2nd and 3rd century CE. This paper provides a critique of the Nabataean fine-ware typo-chronology from ez-Zantur, based on finds from other excavations and sites, and proposes a revised chronology in which the production of Nabataean pottery, including painted and unpainted fine wares, unguentaria and lamps, continues unabated throughout the Middle Roman period until sometime in the first half of the 3rd century CE. The revised typo-chronology evinces a robust period of Nabataean culture at Petra and other related sites under Roman rule, like that found in other cities of the Roman East.

Opis:
The study of mural painting in ancient Alexandria is still based on images decorating walls of Alexandrian tombs due to the fact that discoveries of painted plaster at archaeological sites in the ancient city are rather scarce and poorly documented. For this reason, the analysis of painted decorations from both public buildings and private houses has to be supported with references to the material from the necropolis. Fragments of mural paintings, unfortunately not in large numbers, were found on the walls of buildings discovered at Polish excavations at Kom el-Dikka. They are mostly decorations of house interiors, both from the Early Roman and Imperial Periods (first–third centuries AD) as well as the Late Antique Period (fifth–sixth centuries AD). Very few remains of painted decoration of public buildings were preserved in several so-called auditoria and in some rooms of Imperial Baths. Rich assemblages of painted plaster pieces were found in debris filling interiors of particular buildings. A common presence of uniform patterns and colours indicates that the majority of the material might have come from a single large edifice located in the vicinity of Kom el-Dikka. The material, which consists of several hundred remains, includes a rich selection of imitation of stone revetment, fragments of ornamental decorations and pieces which come from bigger figural compositions. All this material could be a starting point for an in-depth study of painted decoration of Alexandrian architecture between the first and the sixth centuries AD.

Opis:
The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the shape of the Levantine wine jars discovered at Sha‘ar-Ha Amakim and the petrography of their respective fabrics. The majority of sampled ceramic material originates in well-defined chronological phases of the settlement at the site, spanning the Persian through to the Middle Roman periods. The obtained results clearly demonstrate a connection between the historical period and the raw materials used in jar production. Specifically, the jars of the Phoenician type used in the Persian and Hellenistic periods were made from a fairly homogeneous raw material, the features of which such as the content of the fragments of the coralline alga Amphiroa confirm the previous results of the investigations of jars whose fabric has been considered as Phoenician. On the other hand the bag-shaped jars, especially those of the Hellenistic period, are characterized by the more diversified petrography of their fabrics, suggesting that they were produced by a number of local workshops to supply the needs of local wineries. Finally, the Roman period brings an abrupt change in the production of wine containers, with the introduction of the common use of the fine ferruginous soil rich in quartz silt.

Excavations of the Polish–Slovak Archaeological Mission in Tell el-Retaba in 2016 were continued in the western part of the site, uncovering remains of domestic and funerary structures from the Second Intermediate Period in Area 4. Houses from the first half of the Eighteenth Dynasty were also investigated in this area. In Area 9, several houses from the Third Intermediate Period were explored and, for the first time, also substantial remains of a Late Period settlement, including at least one “tower house”.

Opis:
While relatively much is known of Gebelein in the second and third millennia BCE, as well as the Ptolemaic times, the role of the town of Per-Hathor and its surrounding in the Third Intermediate (c. 1076–747 BCE) and Late (c. 747–332 BCE) periods remains largely obscure. The aim of this paper is to examine the existing sources pertaining to the history of Gebelein with the particular focus on state activities in the area, diachronic changes in settlement pattern and sacral topography, as well as funerary landscape in the first three-quarters of first millennium BCE and analyse the available information in a regional context. For this, published and unpublished records are utilised, together with the results of the current field prospection in Gebelein.

Cardiac sympathetic activity during recovery as an indicator of sympathetic activity during task performance

Opis:
The goals of this research were to analyze cardiac sympathetic recovery patterns and evaluate whether sympathetic cardiac responses to a task challenge can be predicted using residual cardiac activity measured directly after the task (that is, during the recovery period). In two studies (total N = 181), we measured cardiac sympathetic activity, quantified as pre‐ejection period and RB interval, during both task performance and the 2‐min recovery period following the task. Additional analyses examined effects on the RZ interval. We found that sympathetic recovery from a task was rather quick: Cardiovascular recovery occurred within the first 30 s of the recovery period. Nevertheless, residual cardiac activity during the recovery period had predictive power for task‐related cardiac activity. This suggests that sympathetic cardiac activity during recovery may serve as a useful indicator of task‐related cardiac sympathetic activity. We discuss the implications of these findings for practical applications and the design of future studies.

Opis:
The ancient topography of the settlement on the northeastern promontory at ‘Marea’ (North Hawariya) was the subject of investigations carried out at the site in 2018 within the frame of a broader excavation project. Fieldwork established the date of some structures recognized along an ancient road. The oldest remains turned out to be from the Roman period, when the promontory became a rubbish dump for production waste, mostly sherds of Amphores égyptienne 3 and 4, from the nearby pottery kilns. Two superimposed occupation levels were recognised, the earlier one from the beginning of the 3rd century AD or later, the later one from the 5th–6th century. The buildings followed a regular grid that fits into the overall plan of the town. The research has resulted in a better understanding of the changes occurring in this part of ‘Marea’.

Excavations in ‘Marea’ in 2018 were conducted within a broader project, the aim of which was to recognize the ancient topography of this settlement. The work this season was mainly carried out at the promontory in the north-eastern part of the site with some partially visible buildings along an ancient street. The goal was threefold: to define when they had been built, for how long they had been in use and to verify results from the previous survey. Consequently, six trenches were made to gain material essential to date the aforementioned constructions. The oldest remains turned out to be from the Roman period, when this area became a rubbish dump for production wastes from adjacent pottery kilns. Above the heaps mainly made of amphorae AE 3 and AE 4 sherds, two occupation levels were recognised with the older one beginning in 3rd century or later. Unfortunately function of the structures uncovered at this level is still unclear. The consecutive phase can be dated to 5th–6th century. During that time buildings were constructed according to the regular grid which fits into the overall plan of the town. Executed works led to better understanding of the particular changes that occurred in this part of ‘Marea’.

Opis:
The paper presents different lengths of working capital cycle and cash conversion cycle in manufacturing companies in Poland in two sub-periods: 2001-2004 and 2005-2008. The conducted research shows that the working capital cycle is varied, related to the sector. In most sections it has a positive value and is longer than 18 days in the first analyzed period, while in the period of 2005-2008 it is longer than 35 days. This means that companies have enough working capital for an increasingly long period of time. The cash conversion cycle in the analyzed period also varied in particular years and sections. In most sectors it was longer than 30 days, which means that enterprises require additional financing in a period of more than one month. On the basis of conducted research we can conclude that the policy of working capital and cash management was appropriate, adjusted to the current economic situation of the country.
