Opis:: The aim of this paper is to compare of the concept of philanthropy, within the scope of the wider social entrepreneurship in the United States and in Poland. The study tries to identify and to explore the approaches to the problems of contemporary changes in the relations between venture philanthropy (VP) and wide-ranging social entrepreneurship in both countries. The analysis shows differences between the American (U.S.) and Polish concept of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship. The paper attempts to compare the legal solutions, determinants and drivers referring to philanthropy in the U.S. and in Poland (including problems of tax exclusions & exemptions). This analysis will verify the hypothesis indicating that new forms of philanthropy are a good combination in the wide-ranging transformation of social entrepreneurship. The study attempts to approach the opportunity of using American strategies for supporting development of venture philanthropy in Poland. The analysis focuses on the benefits of VP and challenges for innovation in philanthropy.

Opis:: The aims of this paper is to systemize to the problems of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), also known as strategic philanthropy in conjunction with the discussion refereeing to Venture Philanthropy. By analyzing the theoretical and practical importance of both of these types of philanthropy (Strategic and Venture) for social economy it seems to appropriate to show the positive impact of CSR on business ventures and to present critical comments refereeing to corporate social responsibility in companies. This study determining the relationship between Strategic Philanthropy & Venture Philanthropy and trying to determine their real importance, scope, framework (in particularly relevance to the business processes of all stakeholders, the local community and social needs of society). The paper is trying to justify the need for a broad treatment of CSR in companies, indicating the direction to obtain the maximum efficiency by acting as support solving problems of social needs. The analysis seeks to demonstrate the need for solving the mentioned problems by the social economy entities among which the most adequate and effective role fulfill the venture philanthropy.

Opis:: Charity, the core of the Gospel ethos, became one of the founding ideas of European civilization and distinguished it from others. In Polish territories, as in other Western European countries, charity work was conducted primarily by the Church, which together with its sense of Gospel duty, defended the weak by concerning itself with economic development. For this purpose, charitable credit institutions, so-called mounts of piety (montes pietatis), were established. They were continued by reformers, in a somewhat changed form, until the decline of the Polish Commonwealth (Republic). The most original institution of this kind was Rev. Stanisław Staszic’s foundation: the Hrubieszów Agricultural Society, which survived until the days of the Polish People’s Republic.

Opis:: Horrors of the First World War affected the life of all citizens of Lodz, especially the young ones. Victualing-related problems led to a phenomenon of hunger and numerous strictly connected diseases. Various charity organizations tried to help children from Lodz, for example by organizing countryside excursions for them. The children took part both in a few-week summer stays, as well as in a few-month visits to the countryside. One of the main aims set by the organizers was to improve the overall well-being of children by providing them with proper nutrition. Even though the children staying in the countryside were required to work and help farmers, some positive influence of the aforementioned stays was frequently indicated.

Tytuł:: On the road to Great India : a program of national revival : the Saraswati temple in Pilani as an expression of the worldview of G.D. Birla

Opis:: The paper aims at tracing the idea of the revival of Indian society and nation in the undertaking of G.D. Birla (1894-1983) - the most influential representative of the Birla family which members, known as industrial magnates and corporate leaders, contribute since the turn of the 20th century to medicine, education and technological development of India. G.D. Birla’s overall goal, seems to have been the revitalisation and strengthening of Hinduism as "Arya dharma" and interpret it in such a way as to make this the religion as inclusive and universal as possible. One of the Birlas' activities fully demonstrating these religious ideas is the temple foundation. Thus considering the wide range of areas in which G.D. Birla was involved, the authors have focused on one such project - the Saraswati temple in Pilani and its ideological background. The temple is located in the Birla Institute of Technology & Science campus and dedicated to the Hindu goddess of wisdom and learning. The authors hope that this analysis will succeed in showing how the individual worldview of the founder left its mark on the idea of the whole family’s endeavours, and at the same time give voice to the range of ideas which, although already expressed at the turn of the nineteenth century, are still alive and influential in India today.

Opis:: Omawiana książka dotyczy prób przeniesienia do Polski amerykańskich nowoczesnych ideałów dzieciństwa oraz wzorców i norm życia rodzinnego. Interesująco przedstawia działania opiekuńczo-wychowawcze prowadzone w oparciu o zasady „nowoczesnej filantropii”, ale nie wykorzystuje wielu wartościowych opracowań polskich uczonych oraz koncepcji teoretycznych i metodologicznych.
The studied monograph concerns attempts at the transfer of modern, American ideals of childhood and the paradigms and norms of family life to Poland. Protective and pedagogic activities based on the rules of “modern philanthropy” are presented in a very noteworthy way, although the author does not employ numerous valuable studies and theoretic and methodological conceptions from Polish scholars.
