Opis:
The field of control of redundant articulated mechanical systems requires the use of algorithms to compute the inverse kinematics. The fields of animation, virtual reality or game in particular, are very interested in these algorithms. We propose in this paper a comparison between several algorithms of incremental type. The considered application concerns the accessibility evaluation of an environment used by a handicapped person (an apartment, a house, an institution…). The physical disability involves a particular characteristic of the human articulated structure that gives rise to constraints that must be taken into account in computing the inverse kinematics.

Opis:
The article unwraps notions related to young African women’s lifeworld experiences of physical disability. The study is positioned in the broad context of the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, existential sociology, the social construction of reality, feminist disability theory, and intersectionality. Focus is given to the way social systems of cultural oppression and discrimination impact women with physical impairments and manifest in how they perceive and make meaning of their everyday life experiences. Women with physical impairments often experience a double measure of oppression-being both female and disabled. When these women try to engage in a normal life and interact with others, they experience barriers imposed on them by their social reality-particularly in the form of cultural norms and patriarchal ideals. There are also instances where participants demonstrate resilience in the face of negative social stereotyping, instances that clearly show that they are not different, and do not perceive themselves as being different to able-bodied women. Drawing on semi-structured in-depth interviews with eight young Black women who are living with physical disabilities in Lesotho, the objective of this article is to examine their everyday life experiences within a predominantly able-bodied society.

The article addresses the issue of dating barriers of women with physical disability. This phenomenon was presented with reference to available research results and analysis. Dating barriers were described considering division of external and internal barriers. External barriers considered social issues which encompassed negative stereotypes, patterns, attitudes and architectural barriers. Internal barriers related directly women with physical disability including their attitudes towards oneself, self-esteem and social skills. The analysis showed that the women with physical disability may have more difficulty in finding partners and forming personal relationships leading to intimacy than do women without disabilities.

Usually articles on the history of amputation of limbs, focus on the surgeons, techniques and on the artificial limbs. Some people after amputation of limbs, survived even before the introduction of antibiotics, knowledge about antisepsis, sophisticated surgical techniques and the introduction of modern radiology. In my 40 years of experience in clinical rehabilitation medicine, I realize that most people with physical disability, do not seek sensation or risks. This article will focus on famous amputees who continued their military career in-spite of their injury and disability.

Opis:
Introduction: Every year in Poland spinal cord injury occurs in about 800 people. They have to learn to live in a completely new world suited to the skills and abilities of healthy people. The aim of the research was to find out how the adaptation to self-disability among people with paraplegia proceeds in relation to its duration. Material and methods: 40 people with spinal cord injury took part in the research. They were divided into two groups according to the duration of their disability: up to two years of disability and from five years on. In the research the “Psycho-social adaptation” anamnesis created by the author of this paper was used. Its questions covered four categories: Attitude towards self-disability; Interpersonal relations; Work and recreation; Plans, desires, dreams. Results: Persons with a shorter course of paraplegia more often emphasized the negative sides of their disability: barriers, their own defects and restraints. On the other hand, persons with a longer course of paraplegia were aware of their limitations, but they were also able to point out a lot of positive sides of their disability. Conclusion: The research has confirmed the fact that a longer period of disability leads to better adaptation to it, but further analyses with a larger group of the examined is necessary. It must also be taken into consideration that the course of time is just one of many factors positively affecting the adaptation process.

The activity of volunteers is a significant factor supporting social activity of young adults with physical disability. For them, the presence of volunteers is a support in making independent, autonomous decisions. It is often the only way to experience life actively. The frequency and quality of volunteer’s activity is dependent on the level of his/her altruism and the type of his/ her motivation. For social activation of people with physical disability, it is very important to identify factors which motivate volunteers to take unpaid services for people with disabilities. Such an attempt is made in this article.

Opis:
The article analyzes the relationship between (perceived and affiliate) courtesy stigma and self-concept among spouses of individuals with physical disabilities. The sample consisted of 85 spouses of individuals with physical disabilities. The data was collected using the Courtesy Stigma Questionnaire by Stanisława Byra and Monika Parchomiuk and the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale by William H. Fitts. The respondents reported significantly higher results for perceived stigma compared to affiliate stigma. Courtesy stigma manifestations are similar in the cognitive, affective and behavioral aspects. The study found significant relationships between the dimensions of courtesy stigma and self-concept aspects. The highest contribution in accounting for the specific aspects of self-concept (e.g. moral self, personal self, social self) is presented by the affective component of courtesy stigma. Statistically significant, although minor, contribution is also presented by the behavioral component, especially for the physical self, self-criticism and identity scales. The cognitive component of courtesy stigma was found not to account for the self-concept of the spouses in any way.

Opis:
Introduction: According to cognitive identity theory internal components can be likely to influence athletic identity formation. The purpose of the present study was to examine relationship between athletic identity of people with physical disabilities and goal perspectives (task and ego) and volitional competences (persistence, purposefulness and expedience). Material and methods: The participants were 134 people with physical disability (n=103 men, and n=31 women). Their age ranging from 14 to 67 years (M=34.98, SD=10.59). All participants participated in physical activities (competitive and recreational). The subjects filled in three questionnaires: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), Task and Ego Orientation in Sports Questionnaire (TEOSQ) and Measure Athletes' Volition - Short (MAV-S). Results: The results revealed that goal orientations and volitional competencies can be predictors of athletic identity dimensions for people with disabilities participating in physical activities. In addition, they suggested that task orientation predicts the three identities (social β=0.43, exclusivity β=0.31 and negative affectivity β=0.38), purposefulness competence predicts two identities (social β=0.34 and exclusivity β=0.30), while persistence competence predicts the negative affectivity identity (β=0.49). Conclusions: In conclusion, dispositional factors achievement goals and volitional competencies can be predicting the athletic identity dimensions.

Introduction: Volition is a determinant psychological factor in the improvement of the performance of the human behavior. The aim of the study was to analyze the volitional qualities; persistence, purposefulness and expediency based on personal characteristics and disability-related characteristics. Material and methods: The participants in this study were 140 people with physical disabilities (n=107 men, and n=33 women) while 10 people did not state their gender. Their age ranging from 14 to 67 years. The participants filled the questionnaire Measure Athletes' Volition-Short (MAV-S). In addition following factors were put into analysis: gender, age, family status, education, occupational status, disability [congenital versus acquired], type of disability [spinal cord injury, brain palsy, amputation, poliomyelitis, muscular dystrophy and other type], form of exercise [sport activities - competitive versus recreational - and any activity], type of sport [team versus individual sports], type of experience [resistance, strength and skills], and form of games [Paralympic, European, National and Sectional]). Results: show that the people with physical disabilities who mainly take part in, physical activities manifest a high level volitional qualities (persistence, purposefulness, and expediency). Conclusions: Personal characteristics like form of exercise, type of sport (team, individual) and athletic experience play a moderating role in the existence of individual differences in volitional qualities.

Factors influencing the caregivers burden
Obciążenie fizyczne i psychiczne odczuwane przez opiekunów osób niepełnosprawnych : badanie przekrojowe
Autorzy:
Pabjańczyk, Karol

Opis:
Introduction: The need for care services is a result of population ageing, especially as life expectancy is expected to rise, due to progress of medicine. The bigger the number of elderly with dementia, illness, and disability, the more the rest of society is involved in care activities. The family serves to supplement the health care system’s financial and organisational gaps, especially in the situation of its failure. Aim: Recognise the causes of the subjectively perceived burden of caregivers who take care of physically disabled dependents. Materials and methods: The study involved 38 caregivers and the physically disabled dependents they cared for. The group of caregivers consisted of 31 women (82%) and 7 men (18%), with an average age of 55.9 years. In the group of physically disabled dependents consisted of 16 women (42%) and 22 men (58%), with a mean age of 67.5 years. Used in the study were: a demographic questionnaire, Barthel Index and the Lawton IADL scale to assess the care recipients’ state, and the Cope Index to assess the positive and negative influence of caregiving on the caregivers. Results: Studies have shown a significant correlation between subjective caregiver burden and: care recipient’s BMI, self-perceived caregivers’ health, number of hours per week devoted to care, caregiver satisfaction, and quality of support received by the caregiver. Conclusions: Interventions to support caregivers of people with disabilities should take into consideration the impact of care on both the physical and psychological state of the caregiver. Proper identification of the needs of caregivers will provide them with the necessary support, help to increase their satisfaction with the role, and protect them from burnout.
