Opis:
Drought poses one of the most important environmental constraints to plant survival and productivity and by implication-food insecurity in the tropics. Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) has the potential of fertilizing the soil thereby improving agricultural production and ensure green environmental and ecosystem stability. Despite the ability of the plant to improve soil fertility and promote greening environment, it has not attracted adequate awareness as a soil improvement plant. This paper highlights the information on the plant in order to intensify awareness for its widespread adoption to achieve the much desired sustainable resource use for greening our economy and environmental management. The successful widespread adoption of the plant will translate to effective drought, desertification and sustainable climate change mitigation approach in Nigeria.

Opis:
In this study, a pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1) isolated from a flock of ornamental pigeons in Poland in 2010 is described. The PPMV-1/Poland/H2/10 isolate showed the amino acid sequence at the cleavage site of F2/F1 ¹¹²KRQKRF¹¹⁷ i.e. typical of virulent strains. Despite having the monoclonal antibody binding pattern typical of pigeon variants PPMV-1 (antigenic group “P”), the Polish isolate clustered into genetic sublineage 4a, which is usually associated with PMV-1 isolated from poultry.

It identifies brand’s image of breeders from Western Europe and from Poland. It indicates kind of marketing strategies used by breeders.
Praca zawiera przegląd teorii na temat marki i jej wizerunku. Zaprezentowano markę jako element strategii produktu. Omówiono elementy marki. Wskazano na różnice pomiędzy marką i jej wizerunkiem. Przedstawiono narzędzia kształtowania wizerunku marki. W ramach części badawczej przedstawiono historię i organizację sportu lotnictwa gołębiami pocztowymi. Przeprowadzono ankietę wśród hodowców gołębi pocztowych. Zidentyfikowano wizerunek marki hodowców zachodnioeuropejskich i polskich. Wskazano strategie marketingowe stosowane przez hodowców.

Opis:
Diatomaceous earth in the prevention of worm infestation in purebred pigeons. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of diatomaceous earth in the prevention of worm infestation in purebred pigeons and forms of its application. Diatomaceous earth (diatomite) was given to pigeons in the province of Mazovia. The following pigeon breeds were used in the experiment: Warsaw butterfly, Berlin white tail, starling and Polish owl. An addition of the natural mineral at 2% of the daily dose of feed was given for three weeks in nine dovecotes. The pigeons were divided into two groups. The Group I comprised 150 birds in five dovecotes. These birds were given grain (feed mix for pigeons, made by Kampol) plus diatomite mixed with a mineral additive (mineral complementary feed, made by Biowet). Group II comprised 150 birds in the other five dovecotes. These birds were given grain (feed mix for pigeons, made by Kampol) mixed with diatomite. The experiment found that the number of parasite eggs in the group I was reduced after a week following the application of diatomite, whereas the number of Capillaria nematode eggs and the proportion of Eimeria coccidia oocysts decreased considerably in group II.
Ziemia okrzemkowa w profilaktyce odrobaczania gołębi rasowych. Celem badania było określenie skuteczności działania ziemi okrzemkowej w profilaktyce odrobaczania gołębi rasowych oraz formy jej podania. Ziemię okrzemkową (diatomit) podawano w gołębnikach zlokalizowanych na terenie województwa mazowieckiego. Dodatek naturalnego minerału podawano w ilości 2% dziennej dawki paszy przez okres trzech tygodni w dziesięciu gołębnikach. Gołębie podzielono na dwie grupy. W grupie I 150 ptaków pochodzących z pięciu gołębników otrzymywało ziarno (mieszanka dla gołębi firmy Kampol) oraz osobno ziemię okrzemkową wymieszaną z mieszanką paszową uzupełniającą mineralną (firmy Biowet). W grupie II 150 gołębi z pozostałych 5 gołębników otrzymywało ziemię okrzemkową wymieszaną z ziarnem (mieszanka dla gołębi firmy Kampol). W kale gołębi zidentyfikowano 3 grupy pasożytów: jaja nicieni z rodzaju Capillaria, jaja nicieni z rodzaju Ascaridia oraz oocysty kokcydiów z rodzaju Eimeria. W przeprowadzonym doświadczeniu stwierdzono w 5 gołębnikach (ZO+ziarno+mieszanka mineralna Biowet) całkowitą likwidację jaj pasożytów już po tygodniu stosowania ziemi okrzemkowej, a w 5 pozostałych (ZO+ziarno) wyraźne zmniejszenie liczebności jaj nicieni Capillaria oraz zmniejszenie udziału oocyst kokcydiów Eimeria.

Opis:
This paper historically traces the purposive domestication of pigeons in order to examine the dialectical relationship between nature and culture. It is demonstrated that each instance of the domestication of the pigeon for a new function (i.e., food, messenger) also entailed the construction of a role of the bird in human society, replete with symbolic representations and moral valuations. Yet it is also argued that, though animals are repositories for social meaning, and culture is literally inscribed into the physical structure of domesticated animals, such meanings are patterned and constrained according to the biological features of the animal itself. The ubiquitous and unwanted “street pigeon” now found around the globe is the descendent of escaped domestic pigeons, occupying the unique and ambiguous category of “feral”- neither truly wild nor domestic. Ironically, the very traits that were once so desirous and that were naturally selected for are now what make the feral pigeon so hard to get rid of and so loathsome.

5´-Nucleotidase specific towards dCMP and AMP was isolated from avian breast muscle and characterized. It was found to be similar to a type-I form (cN-I) identified earlier as the AMP-selective 5´-nucleotidase responsible for adenosine formation during ATP breakdown in transfected COS-7 cells. Expression pattern of the cN-I gene in pigeon tissues indicated breast muscle as a rich source of the transcript. We purified the enzyme from this source using two-step chromatography and obtained an active homogenous preparation, free of ecto-5´-nucleotidase activity. The tissue content of the activity was calculated at 0.09 U/g wet weight. The specific activity of the enzyme preparation was 4.33 U/mg protein and it preferred dCMP and AMP to dAMP and IMP as a substrate. Its kinetic properties were very similar to those of the enzyme purified earlier from heart tissue. It was strongly activated by ADP. Inhibition by inorganic phosphate was more pronounced than in heart-isolated cN-I. Despite this difference, a similar physiological function is suggested for cN-I in both types of muscle.
